No one expected much out of the New York Red Bulls in their only 2012 league match against 2011 MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy. On paper, a full strength LA and a depleted Red Bulls sounded less like the "1 Percent Derby" and more like the 1% hosting the 99%. But even without its highest paid players, the Metro side made waves with a defensive 1-0 win at the Home Depot Center.
Red Bulls Defy The Odds With 1-0 Win In Los Angeles
Red Bulls Shuts Out New England 1-0, But Henry Gets Injured
For weeks, senior New York Red Bulls players have sounded the same warning: the team needed to find a way to grind out 1-0 or 2-0 victories, as they would not always be able to score 4 goals a game. That warning became reality Saturday against the New England Revolution. After losing leading scorer Thierry Henry early to a strained hamstring, the Red Bulls managed to hang on for an unlikely 1-0 victory, their first shutout of the year.
DC United Destroy Indefensible Red Bulls 4-1
The up and down season for the New York Red Bulls continues. Rather than the offensive juggernaut that ran rampant, New York suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of bitter rivals DC United, with striker Chris Pontius (not that Chris Pontius) abusing NY's makeshift defense to complete a hat trick.
Pre-Game Trash Talkin': Debating Tonight's Red Bulls Vs. DC United Match
Tonight, the New York Red Bulls will be in Washington D.C. to play D.C. United. The Red Bulls, second place in the East, are heading into RFK Stadium with a 3-2-1 record, while DCU (third place) has a 2-2-3 record; both teams trail Sporting Kansas City which has a 7-1-0 record. To prepare for the showdown, Gothamist's Dan Dickinson and DCist's Pablo Maurer discussed the matchup at length. Okay, there was name-calling, a lot of discussion about New Yorkers being liars, and how RFK Stadium is infested with rodents. Here's an excerpt:
Opponent's Broken Clavicle Means Rafa Marquez Draws ANOTHER 3-Game Suspension
It was only a matter of time. After his rugby tackle and kick that broke the clavicle of San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas last Saturday, the MLS Disciplinary Committee today announced a three match suspension for Red Bulls midfielder Rafa Marquez , as well as an undisclosed fine.
Red Bulls Escape San Jose Clash With 2-2 Draw
Returning home after three consecutive three goal victories, few expected the New York Red Bulls (3-2-0) to roll over the San Jose Earthquakes (4-1-0) in a similar fashion. New York's inability post a shutout in their first five matches, combined with the ever-present danger of Earthquakes star Chris Wondolowski equalled a tough challenge at Red Bull Arena. With a back-and-forth goal flurry in the first half and a defensive struggle for NY in the second, the teams battled to a 2-2 draw, a result that left neither side happy.
Red Bulls Wreck The Crew In Third Straight Blowout Victory
MLS defenses, take notice: Thierry Henry and Kenny Cooper are coming for you. For the third straight week, Henry and Cooper combined for four goals, as the New York Red Bulls rolled into Columbus Saturday and brought down the Crew 4-1, improving their record to 3-2-0.
Thierry Henry Makes An Impact In 5-2 Win Over Montreal
It was a tale of two halves on Saturday afternoon, as 2012 expansion side Montreal Impact traveled to Harrison to face the New York Red Bulls. Lackluster effort in the first half threatened to turn the game into a nightmare. But a dominant second half, as well as a Thierry Henry hat trick, gave the Red Bulls a dream-like comeback finish of 5-2 for their second win of the season.
Luke Rodgers Will Not Return To Red Bulls
After months of waiting for a resolution, New York Red Bulls fans were dealt a blow today as the team announced that striker Luke Rodgers would not be returning in 2012.
Red Bulls Race To 4-1 Win Over Colorado
You'd be hard pressed to call the third match of the year "must win" for any team in any sport, but after the New York Red Bulls 0-2-0 start, it certainly felt like one. Never has a high-pressure home opener looked so easy: in front of a raucus crowd, the Red Bulls made a statement and decimating a depleted Colorado Rapids 4-1 for their first win of the season.

Red Bulls Defense Exploited In 2-0 Loss To Salt Lake
Expectations were low as the New York Red Bulls traveled to battle Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Thierry Henry called the Utah side "the best team in the league by a distance". New York had been unable to win—or even score a single goal—at Rio Tinto Stadium since 2008. And their fortunes would not change in 2012, as two more defensive mistakes culminated in a 2-0 defeat.
Wrong-Footed Red Bulls Drop 2-1 To Dallas in Season Opener
2012 was supposed to be a fresh start for the New York Red Bulls, one where the team will make a serious run at the MLS Cup or Supporter's Shield. But fans can already be heard muttering "Same Old Metro" as the team dropped a 2-1 result at FC Dallas Stadium to start the 2012 season yesterday.
MLS Still Set On A Soccer Stadium Somewhere In NYC
On Thursday afternoon, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber held his annual teleconference to speak about the league in advance of the 17th season, which kicks off Saturday afternoon. As expected, a number of the questions revolved around what has become known as "NY2": the league's continued efforts to find space for a soccer-specific stadium and 20th team somewhere within NYC proper. Well, except for Staten Island.

Goal: Red Bulls Make Draft Picks, NY Cosmos Have West Side Dreams
After a quiet first two months of the off-season, and with team management stating they were "not banking" on Thursday's MLS SuperDraft for major help, Red Bulls fans could be forgiven for thinking the team might not even show up in Kansas City. Yet the team still manage to make waves, acquiring goalkeeper Ryan Meara in the draft, Swedish defender Markus Holgersson on a transfer, and Portland Timbers forward Kenny Cooper in a trade.
Red Bulls Knocked Out Of MLS Playoffs With 3-1 Aggregate Loss In LA
Coming off of Sunday's tight 1-0 loss at Red Bull Arena (and the subsequent brawl), the New York Red Bulls needed a victory at Home Depot Center tonight to stay in the playoff picture, something that no other team had managed this year. With tensions high and both Juninho and Rafa Marquez suspended, the game could've gone either way, but LA emerged victorious with a 3-1 aggregate score.
Red Bulls Lose 0-1 To LA In First Semifinal Leg
It was a match dubbed by supporters as "The 1% Derby". With the five highest paid players in the league (David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Rafael Marquez, Robbie Keane, and Landon Donovan) split between them, the New York Red Bulls hosted the LA Galaxy yesterday afternoon in the first leg of the MLS Western Conference semifinals. The scrappy game saw questionable officiating, a post-match fight, and a lone Mike Magee goal that gave LA a 1-0 road victory heading into Thursday's second leg.
Red Bulls Down FC Dallas 2-0 In MLS Playoffs, Face LA On Sunday
The opening match of the MLS Playoffs saw the #4 Wildcard New York Red Bulls travel to Frisco, Texas to face the #1 Wildcard FC Dallas. With a strong streak against Dallas - New York has won three and tied two of their last five meetings - RBNY were considered the favorites against a Dallas side that had looked out of energy over the last month of the season. The Red Bulls Return Tonight
You have to hand it to Major League Soccer, they found a way to make soccer even more irrelevant in the United States, starting the season on the first night of March Madness. That’s right, the Red Bulls begin their season tonight against the Seattle Sounders FC. The Bulls are coming off a trip to the MLS Cup and their most successful season in franchise history. Repeating the success of last season will be tough though. Juan Pablo Angel is back and Danny Cepero is starting in goal for the suspended Jon Conway, but Dave van der Bergh is off to Dallas. They have added some youth, but can Juan Carlos Osorio pull off another coaching miracle? Then again, bet against the Red Bulls at your own risk.

Ironically, the Red Bulls would not have made the playoffs without the help of the Crew, who beat DC United in the final game of the season.

Last Night's Action: Devils Can't Recover
Quick Hits: Light Sentence for Fall at das Stadion
- Remember Scott Harper? He's that kid who foolishly jumped out from the stands at a Yankee game last season only to be caught by the net that protects the crowd from foul balls. For his actions, Harper was given three years probation and banned for life from Yankee Stadium. Seems a little light for risking the lives of all the people in those expensive seats. Then again, being banned for life from The Stadium seems like more of a punishment than the probation.
Last Night's Action: Mets Get to 70; Yankees Use Homers to Win
- Mets 6, Nationals 4: John Maine's scoreless inning streak surely couldn't last. Former Yankee Nick Johnson ended the streak at 26 with a home run in the 4th inning of last night's win against the Nationals. Maine's chance of winning his third game ended in the 6th inning when the Nationals scored 3 runs, chasing him from the game. The Mets scored two in the 7th to break a 4-4 tie with RBI from Jose Valentin and Michael Tucker. Billy Wagner pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 27th save of the season. And for those readers that like to place the Mets in the AL East for comparison (not sure why you would) - their 70 wins would put them atop the Yankees.
Last Night's Action: Beltran Belts Another One
-Mets 8 Reds 3: Carlos Beltran became the first player in four years and the first Met since Robin Ventura to hit grand slams in consecutive games. Beltran’s blast broke open a 3-2 game and ensured Mike Pelfry of his second win. Xavier Nady and Jose Valentin also went deep for New York.
