The Red Bulls Return Tonight

You have to hand it to Major League Soccer, they found a way to make soccer even more irrelevant in the United States, starting the season on the first night of March Madness. That’s right, the Red Bulls begin their season tonight against the Seattle Sounders FC. The Bulls are coming off a trip to the MLS Cup and their most successful season in franchise history. Repeating the success of last season will be tough though. Juan Pablo Angel is back and Danny Cepero is starting in goal for the suspended Jon Conway, but Dave van der Bergh is off to Dallas. They have added some youth, but can Juan Carlos Osorio pull off another coaching miracle? Then again, bet against the Red Bulls at your own risk.

You might not have realized it, but we have a local team playing for a championship tomorrow. The Red Bulls are playing in their first MLS Cup tomorrow afternoon at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA, when they take on the Columbus Crew at 3:30 on ABC. Ironically, the Red Bulls would not have made the playoffs without the help of the Crew, who beat DC United in the final game of the season.

  • SI Yankees 4, Lake Monsters 2: You gotta love the names of Minor League Baseball teams. The Lake Monsters, who play near Lake Champlain in Vermont, even have a monster as a mascot. Despite their mascot, they couldn't defeat the Yankees (not quite as original a name) last night.
  • Red Bulls 1, FC Dallas 0: After 360 minutes of play, the Red Bulls haven't allowed a goal. They won't lose too many games if they keep playing like that. They're 3-0-1, and they set an MLS record for the longest shutout streak to start a season.
  • - Remember Scott Harper? He's that kid who foolishly jumped out from the stands at a Yankee game last season only to be caught by the net that protects the crowd from foul balls. For his actions, Harper was given three years probation and banned for life from Yankee Stadium. Seems a little light for risking the lives of all the people in those expensive seats. Then again, being banned for life from The Stadium seems like more of a punishment than the probation.

    - Mets 6, Nationals 4: John Maine's scoreless inning streak surely couldn't last. Former Yankee Nick Johnson ended the streak at 26 with a home run in the 4th inning of last night's win against the Nationals. Maine's chance of winning his third game ended in the 6th inning when the Nationals scored 3 runs, chasing him from the game. The Mets scored two in the 7th to break a 4-4 tie with RBI from Jose Valentin and Michael Tucker. Billy Wagner pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 27th save of the season. And for those readers that like to place the Mets in the AL East for comparison (not sure why you would) - their 70 wins would put them atop the Yankees.

-Mets 8 Reds 3: Carlos Beltran became the first player in four years and the first Met since Robin Ventura to hit grand slams in consecutive games. Beltran’s blast broke open a 3-2 game and ensured Mike Pelfry of his second win. Xavier Nady and Jose Valentin also went deep for New York.

    - Marlins 3, Mets 2: John Maine was the tough-luck loser yesterday in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader against the Marlins. Maine allowed only 6 hits over 6 innings, but three of those hits were home runs. The Mets didn't offer up much run support in the loss, getting only 3 hits.

    - Mets 8, Yankees 3: The Mets woke up from their four-game slump in the first inning during yesterday's game at Yankee Stadium, scoring two runs in the first frame. It got better for the Mets in the 4th when they scored 5 runs. Randy Johnson allowed 8 runs in a game for the first time since 2003 and continued his 1st inning struggles. Steve Trachsel pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 runs and left the game with tightness in his groin, something that was bothering him previously, but shouldn't result in any missed action. The eight runs scored by the Mets equals their run production during their losing streak. The two teams face off tonight at 8:05 in the rubber game with Alay Soler facing Jaret Wright.

-Washington 11 Yankees 9: If the Yankees miss the playoffs by one game, this is the one to remember. Fifteen hits and a seven-run lead weren’t enough for the pathetic Yankee pitching as they collapsed down the stretch and gave the Nationals an improbable victory.

    - Giants 6, Mets 4: The Giants and Mets waited out a rain delay before the first game of their single ticket doubleheader before San Francisco picked up the victory. Former Met Armando "Who Let the Dogs Out" Benitez picked up the save in a way that every Met fan can remember - walking two batters before getting the save. Of course, that's assuming he even got the save when he was with the Mets. Barry Bonds was 2-3 with 2 walks, 1 RBI and a run scored.

Red Bull New York lost to FC Dallas, 2-1. While the loss was only the 2nd loss of the season for the Red Bulls, they only have one win. The rest of their games all ended in a tie.

Major League Soccer and Red Bull announced today that the MetroStars were bought by Red Bull. Some reports put the purchase price at as much as $30 million. The team's official name is "Red Bull New York" and will be the New York Red Bulls on the pitch. It's the energy drink company's 2nd foray into soccer team ownership. Their other team, Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian Bundesliga. In their announcement of the purchase, Red Bull said that their two teams will work closely together, and Alexi Lalas will remain as the GM of the team (see our interview with Lalas). The team's new stadium in Harrison, NJ will be "Red Bull Arena".

There are tons of meta-property maps these days that pull results from all the local real estate companies, but Trulia has a really nice looking interface, so it's definitely worth checking out. The site also has some cool features, like an email notification for properties that meet your specifications, and a great NYC fact sheet chock full of data links. Also worth a looksie: Trulia Brooklyn!

We have a building boom in the tristate area. The Yankees and Mets have already announced their plans for new stadiums to be built for the 2009 season, the Nets are building an arena in Brooklyn, the Devils are moving to a new arena in Newark and even the Metrostars have gotten into the act.

Early this morning NASA successfully launched a rocket carrying the Aura spacecraft. Aura will orbit the Earth every 100 minutes at an altitude of 438 miles, and will "see" every place on Earth every sixteen days. Aura's primary mission is to study atmospheric chemistry. The spacecraft has four instruments that go by the romantic names HIRDLS, MLS, OMI, and TES. The first two of these, the High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS) and the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), operate somewhat differently than most Earth-observing satellites. Instead of looking straight down on the Earth below, the limb sounders are pointed to look through the atmosphere tangential to the surface. In doing so the instruments can observe the vertical distribution of chemicals such as carbon dioxide, ozone, water vapor, methane, and several other gases and aerosols. Among the questions Aura's instruments will help scientists answer are: Is the ozone layer recovering? What are the meteorological and chemical processes that control air quality? And, how is the climate changing? If all goes well Aura will operate for at least six years.

The MetroStars of the MLS unveiled their plans for a new stadium today. The stadium will seat 25,000 fans at a cost of $100 and will sit on the Passaic River in Harrison, NJ. It is scheduled to be ready for the 2006 MLS season.

In Saturday's game, the Revolution scored on goals from Felix Brilliant and Clint Dempsey, both rookies. The Revolution broke a three game losing streak and halted the MetroStars two game win streak. The MetroStars scored their lone goal in the 90th minute on a penalty kick by Amado Guevara and threatened in stoppage play, but could not tie the game.

Lovely day, lovely day, lovely day, lovely day. Mostly Sunny with a High of 72.

    - It's a lame sports weekend, so sign up for some rec sports.

This weekend looks to be a rather boring for the New York region. The Mets and Yankees are both out of town playing teams in Florida. There is no hockey, no baketball, no nothing. George Vecsey pointed this travesty out yesterday and Gothamist couldn't agree more. When was the last time there were no local sports this weekend? What happened to seeing scores of Navy men and women in the stands of Shea or Yankee Stadium? Fleet week just doesn't seem right without that picture.

The NBA and its players have had an absurd playoff schedule so far this season. It almost seems like they only play Thursday-Sunday and take the rest of the week off. Games are 48 minutes long, plus add on all their commercial breaks, time outs, and fouling in the final two minutes and you have plenty of rest for the players. NBA play, while physical, doesn't tend to result in concussions or many contusions at all.
