Archbishop Dolan Calls Missing Funds Claims "Ludicrous"

Archbishop Dolan Calls Missing Funds Claims "Ludicrous"

Archbishop Timothy Dolan addressed claims that his former archdiocese in Milwaukee moved $130 million from its books so it wouldn't have to pay victims of church sex abuse. A lawyer representing the victims wants to question Dolan about the allegedly missing money, but Dolan was furious about the insinuations and told the Daily News, "To think ... like Dolan's got some off-shore account in the Cayman Islands or something, this is just ludicrous. Darn it, I think the archdiocese has done a good job. And Lord knows, I worked my hardest." more ›

Last Night's Action: Another Big 2

Last Night's Action: Another Big 2

  • Rangers 4 Carolina 2: It was the perfect blend of the old and the new for New York on Thursday. Brandon Dubinsky got things started for the Rangers with a great backhand off of the pretty feed from Jaromir Jagr. Sean Avery came off the bench at the right time to grab the puck and score a goal right before the first period ended to make it 2-0. It was 3-2 in the third when Nigel Dawes fed Brendan Shanahan with a perfect cross-ice pass to make it 4-2 and clinch the win.

Obama and Clinton: War of the Words

The Wisconsin, Washington and Hawaii primaries have been going on today, and while John McCain is expected to further solidify his presumptive nomination, the Democratic race is tight as ever, with a Gallup pole now showing Clinton closing the gap on Obama after his string of eight straight victories. more ›

In Search of White Tower

In Search of White Tower

Imagine that final beach scene in Planet of the Apes, but substitute every small patch of sand for a chain restaurant and that’ll give you an idea of where the NY restaurant scene might be heading – all blown up, with Charlton Heston eventually smashing his fists into a huge pile of thermal cardboard coffee cup sleeves instead of foamy surf. more ›

Last Night's Action: Putting the Power in Power Play

Last Night's Action: Putting the Power in Power Play

  • Nets 97, Bucks 95: Do the Nets even know how they won this game? They didn't get a typical night from Richard Jefferson or an outstanding effort from Vince Carter. What they did have was great shot selection (50 percent from the floor) and great defense by Josh Boone on Milwaukee's big men. Jason Kidd's 15 assists didn't hurt either.

Warm Beginning, Cold End, to Thanksgiving

Warm Beginning, Cold End, to Thanksgiving

Another gloomy day today. A bit of fog this morning may delay flights out of town. You may also have weather-caused delays if you're going to northern New England (ice and snow), Chicago-Detroit-Milwaukee (rain) and the front range of the Rockies from Denver northward (snow). If you're staying in town you can expect cloudy skies and mild temperatures with a high in the mid-50s. It won't cool off much tonight, making for a comfortable... more ›

Last Night's Action: No. 299 and Counting

  • Staten Island 9, Oneonta 5: Down one entering the fourth, the Baby Bombers had six of their first seven batters reach base. The one who didn't? That would be Justin Snyder, who managed only a sacrifice fly. The five-spot put the Yankees up to stay.

Last Night's Action: Best In The NL?

  • Seattle 2 Yankees 1: Where do you start with the questions? How about why is Bobby Abreu batting second when he is in the midst of a horrific slump? Or, why do the Yankees insist on bunching their lefty and righty hitters together, creating easy matchups for the opposing manager? more ›

  • The Knicks Win!

    The Knicks Win!

-Knicks 98 Memphis 90: If you didn’t decide to snap up some low-priced tickets to the Garden tonight, you actually missed something. The Knicks won for only the second time at home behind another impressive performance from Eddy Curry. Curry was 9-13 from the field and added 15 rebounds to his 26 points and was only stopped by the refs when he fouled out. more ›

Last Night's Action: The Knicks Play Defense!

-Knicks 102 Washington 82: After nine games this much is clear, you don’t want to play the Knicks on Wednesday. New York recorded their third win of the season, all on Wednesday with a fairly easy victory. Surprisingly, the win was keyed by a great defensive effort as the Knicks held Washington to 31.5% from the field. Renaldo Balkman had a fantastic game, hustling all over the floor while scoring 18 points. more ›

Mayors Meet to Fight Illegal Guns

Mayors Meet to Fight Illegal Guns

Mayor Bloomberg and Boston's Mayor Menino hosted a summit to stop the spread of illegal guns in communities, with thirteen mayors from other cities (Buffalo, Dallas, Hartford, Jackson, Jersey City, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Providence, Seattle, Trenton, Tulsa, DC and Yonkers) in attendance. Bloomberg referenced the death of 2 year old David Pacheco, saying, "The only thing that would have helped that child is if we had the courage to stand up and get the guns off the street. And those who vote against getting guns off the street really are the ones as much responsible as the shooter, because if the shooter didn't have a gun, that child would still be alive." Fighting words - and the Mayor also blamed Congress for not doing enough. A Harvard professor explained to the Times, "We are not an aberrant country in terms of crime or in terms of violence. The only difference is homicides, where we are way out of whack. We have many more handguns and much weaker gun laws than any other country." more ›

All Hail the Chess Kings at Murrow

All Hail the Chess Kings at Murrow

The kids in the Edward R. Murrow High School chess team won the national championship of the United Chess Federation in Milwaukee this past weekend. The team won the city and state championships earlier this year, but it was a half-point that pushed them to the top place. Last year, Murrow was tied for first (they've won first a total of six times), so this year's celebration at Chuck E. Cheese must have felt extra sweet. more ›

    Back on the Horse

    Back on the Horse

For now, the Mets won't do losing streaks. Even with their fifth starter facing on of the league's best pitcher--albeit in his first start back from an injury--the Mets still took Sunday's rubber game with a 9-3 win over Milwaukee. A day after his team had its seven-game winning streak snapped, Brian Bannister survived five innings of one-run, five-walk ball and earned the victory against Ben Sheets. Carlos Delgado made up for a throwing error with a three-run homer in the eighth inning that helped blow the game open. more ›

    SXSW: Days 2 & 3

Day 1 was long, but we managed to get a few hours of sleep and gear up for the rest of week. Last Thursday we started off our day at the South By Stereogum party. Brisket on white bread was served, Fat Tire beers were distributed and Aziz Ansari was hosting the show, which had a solid lineup: Aloha, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Thunderbirds Are Now!, Rogue Wave and Ted Leo. more ›

    Signs of Life?

    Signs of Life?

The Yankees' dismal road trip had only its second highlight Wednesday, a 12-3 win at Milwaukee. Alex Rodriguez hit two home runs, including the 400th of his careeer, and his team's sputtering offense finally woke up. For all their troubles, the Yankees were only behind Boston by three games heading into Wednesday's games, and that was after losing nine of ten. Gothamist has been impressed by the Orioles, but it'll be tougher for them to be in first place in August than in early June. In other words, the Yankees could be a lot worse off in the AL East. more ›

Back on Television, Mets Win Again

Back on Television, Mets Win Again

Doug Mientkiewicz’s sixth home run broke a 4-4 tie in the 8th. Mike DeJean, just one day removed from allowing the winning run in Sunday's 5-4 loss in Milwaukee, won in relief of Aaron Heilman. Mike Piazza had a three-run home run and Kaz Matsui a solo shot for the Mets, who have won four of five on this road trip and six of seven overall. Heilman survived two rain delays totaling an hour and 35 minutes to last five and a third innings. Dae-Sung Koo relieved him and promptly blew the 4-0 lead, allowing two inherited runners to score along with two of his own. more ›

Welcoming Back Benson and Cameron with a Win

While he didn't make his season debut yesterday, it certainly seems like Mike Piazza has been missing all season. Entering yesterday's game Piazza was hitting below the Mendoza Line, but that all changed with a 4-5 performance. One of Piazza's hits was a 3-run home run in the 8th inning, which gave the Mets a healthy cushion they would later need. more ›

A Talk With Director Niels Mueller

A Talk With Director Niels Mueller

I was born during the Kennedy administration, in Milwaukee Wisconsin, so people can date me within a thousand days. I went to Tufts University in Boston, which is where I started making short films. In fact, my first project was with my next-door neighbor, Gary Winick, who directed Tadpole and is off doing Charlotte’s Web right now. I had an idea to do a short film on super 8, I asked Gary if he would act in it, which he agreed. So, he had to take of his Fiorucci’s. He was from New York, so that’s what they were wearing at the time. more ›

Stupid Marketing Tricks: The Village & Sci-Fi Channel

Stupid Marketing Tricks: The Village & Sci-Fi Channel

The hilarious thing is that on the Sci-Fi website for the documentary, there are links to other papers noting how M. Night suddenly took away access, but no links (natch) to anything to reveals the true story. Wells ends his thoughts on The Village wanna-be buzz with:

I would be lying if I didn't admit that this episode has totally pissed me off, and that I would love to repay the favor by trashing THE VILLAGE any which way I can. I'm not going to say it's not a good film if I think otherwise after seeing it. But I think this episode should be read as a big green light by all entertainment journalists to dump on THE VILLAGE in any way possible. You know....because it'll feel good.
Ah, sweet revenge. Gothamist has seen trailers for The Village, but it just looks like The Crucible with some aliens and some paint. Anyone know anything else? And one of the co-directors of the non-controversial documentary is Nathaniel Kahn, who directed the Oscar-nominated My Architect about his father, Louis I. Kahn. more ›
