Today's 11 Mile "End To End For 99%" March Begins On 181st, Ends In Zuccotti Park

At 10:30 this morning, elected officials and neighborhood civic leaders began marching 11 miles from 181st and St. Nicholas down to Zuccotti Park, in an event dubbed "End to End for 99%" that seeks to link the communities of Northern Manhattan and the Bronx with the movement in Lower Manhattan. "Our communities have been devastated by the economic assault on middle class and poor families, even as Wall Street has enjoyed a historic financial bonanza," State Senator Adriano Espaillat said in a statement. "We're marching for jobs, we're marching for affordable housing, we're marching for the millionaire's tax," city councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez says. more ›

Cuomo Compares His Opposition To "Millionaire's Tax" To His Father's Death Penalty Stance

Cuomo Compares His Opposition To "Millionaire's Tax" To His Father's Death Penalty Stance

It doesn't matter if 72% of New York voters want the "Millionaire's Tax" reinstated, Governor Cuomo doesn't necessarily care what you people think. "The fact that everybody wants it, that doesn't mean all that much," Cuomo told the Times at a press conference. The governor also noted that his father opposed the death penalty when many voters supported it. “Reporters would say, ‘Well, people want it,’” Cuomo said. “And the point was, you know, we don’t elect—you can’t just have as a governor a big poll-taking machine, right? And we take a poll, and whatever the poll says, that’s what we do." Except when we're talking casinos. more ›

72% Of Voters Want To Extend NY's "Millionaires Tax," Despite Cuomo's Objections

72% Of Voters Want To Extend NY's "Millionaires Tax," Despite Cuomo's Objections

According to a new poll conducted by the Siena Research Institute [pdf], 72% of voting New Yorkers favor hiking taxes on those making $1 million or more annually. 83% of Democrats support the measure, but 70% of independents and 55% of Republicans do as well. “It is supported by more than two-thirds of voters from every region of the state," pollster Steven Greenberg says. So why is Governor Cuomo death threats or no, still opposed to extending New York's so-called "Millionaire's Tax?" more ›

Occupy Wall Street Protest 1% New Yorkers Who Hoard Wealth

Occupy Wall Street Protest 1% New Yorkers Who Hoard Wealth

The Millionaires' March, organized by the Working Families Party and NY Communities For Change, is in full swing as Occupy Wall Street protesters march to the homes of billionaires and millionaires "specially chosen for their willingness to hoard wealth at the expense of the 99%." Those lucky men include super-rich industrialist (and shadowy Tea Party backer) David Koch, News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch, real estate developer Howard Milstein, hedge fund manager John Paulson, and JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon. The march started about an hour ago, and Gridlock Sam has been Tweeting, "Lots of tourists taking photos and adding to the crowd that's right now several hundred" and "Pds got the barricades ready to roll if necessary. Will try to keep march on sidewalks but could spill onto a lane of 5 av." more ›

Cuomo Targeted In Death Threats Over Letting "Millionaire Tax" Expire

Cuomo Targeted In Death Threats Over Letting "Millionaire Tax" Expire

Governor Cuomo and other state politicians have received threatening emails for refusing to renew a tax on millionaires that is set to expire at the end of the year. The tax is actually levied against New Yorkers with income over $200,000, but Assembly Democrats want to extend it for those literally making more than million dollars a year. It's estimated that extending the tax on the richest 3% of New Yorkers for another year could generate at least $1 billion in desperately-needed revenue. But isn't it better to drown the government and let that billion trickle down on its own, as many millionaires argue? No, say people sending threatening emails! more ›

Bloomberg Still Hates Millionaires' Tax

At the end of this year, a tax for New Yorkers with income over $200,000—also known as the millionaire's tax—will expire and Assembly Democrats want to extend a tax for those making more than million dollars a year. Even though it could be at least another $1 billion in much-needed revenue, guess who hates the idea? Yup, Mayor Bloomberg. more ›

Silver Pushing to Preserve "Millionaire's Tax," Cuomo Defiant

Silver Pushing to Preserve "Millionaire's Tax," Cuomo Defiant

Governor Cuomo's proposed $132.9 budget would cut spending 2.7%, slashing $1.5 billion in education aid and $2.8 billion from health care. But it would also get rid of a tax on incomes over $200,000 for single filers and $300,000 for joint filers, first levied in 2009. Cuomo promised during the campaign that he would close the budget gap without raising taxes, and the affluent people in New York would be so disillusioned if they saw a politician breaking his promises. But Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver and a growing army of other Democrats want him to do just that! more ›
