Sunny And Mild Weather For The Giants' Ticker Tape Parade

Sunny And Mild Weather For The Giants' Ticker Tape Parade

When do you think the latest date is that really cold weather can strike New York? That depends on how you define "really cold" but this graph of every January through March daily temperature since 1971 has the answer. The squiggly line is the mean and that bottomed out a couple weeks ago at 29 degrees. Following the January Thaw, the curve reaches another nadir on February 5th before beginning a slow increase. We should dutifully point out that the thaw, like all the day-to-day squiggles in the line, is not statistically significant -just look at that variability. From a climate perspective there is still a chance of cold weather, but the odds are against us having a brutally cold week like what happened in 1979. more ›

Blizzard In Colorado, Sunny Skies in New York

Blizzard In Colorado, Sunny Skies in New York

Since today is the twelfth straight day of warmer than normal temperatures we've taken to enjoying winter vicariously. Blizzard conditions and up to two feet of snow are expected to fall on Denver and eastern Colorado today. Here in New York we should see lots of sun early on and maybe a few clouds invading late this afternoon. With a high of 45 degrees it won't be as warm as the past few days. more ›

A Few More Mild Days Before Winter Begins

A Few More Mild Days Before Winter Begins

Record highs were set or tied all over the region on Saturday except for Central Park, where the high of 62 fell two degrees short of the record set in 1907. While the weather is expected to remain warmer than normal for most of this week, no records are anticipated and things are looking good for a return to more seasonable temperatures by the weekend. Despite the cool start this morning, plentiful sun throughout the day should warm the city to the lower 40s this afternoon. The warming trend continues through mid-week with highs in the upper 40s tomorrow and near 50 on Wednesday. Then things begin to change. more ›

There's No There There In That There Forecast

There's No There There In That There Forecast

A weak area of low pressure will pass through the region late Saturday. Be on the lookout for a cloud or two! Another dry air mass will follow on Sunday. This one doesn't have much cold air. Sunday's high will be in the mid 40s under sunny skies and the temperature on Monday is expected to stay in the low 40s. That's a couple degrees warmer than average. more ›

Light Rain Thursday As Fall Quietly Winds Down

Light Rain Thursday As Fall Quietly Winds Down

Not much happening with the weather right now. High pressure is slowly moving offshore today so we'll see a mix of sun and clouds with a high in the upper 40s. What excitement exists, and it's not much, is a Midwestern storm that will push first a warm front and then a cold front through the city tomorrow. There's a good chance we'll see some drizzle or light rain tomorrow, especially in the afternoon. Thursday's high will be in the lower to mid 50s. more ›

Dry Weekend For A Warm, Wet Year

Dry Weekend For A Warm, Wet Year

Despite a cold front tonight we are going to have another dry weekend. High pressure overhead means a sunny day with a high in the lower 50s. A cold front that stretches all the way from Quebec down into Mexico is going the pass through the city tonight. It's a dry front so all that's going to happen is the wind is going to become gusty and northerly and Saturday will be cooler with a high in the upper 40s. The temperature should rebound to the mid 50s on Sunday afternoon. more ›

More Sun To Start September

More Sun To Start September

How about a bit of Irene weather trivia to end the month? It was little noted but a post-storm analysis by the National Weather Service confirmed that a weak tornado touched down in Cunningham Park in Queens during the height of the storm. The tornado's peak wind speed was estimated to be 85 mph. Rainfall across the city averaged roughly six inches. Do you know how many gallons that is? more ›

Much Drier Weather On The Way

Much Drier Weather On The Way

Yesterday afternoon's downpour dropped a half-month's worth of rain on portions of the city in less than two hours. Central Park led the way with over two inches of rain. There is a slight chance of a scattered thunderstorm this afternoon but most likely yesterday's shower was the last we'll see for a few days. Today's high should stay in the mid 80s under a mix of sun and clouds. more ›

Storm Gone, A Sunny, Dry Weekend Is Expected

Storm Gone, A Sunny, Dry Weekend Is Expected

Now that yesterday's scary looking, but ultimately not all that damaging (unless that was your backyard shed in Denville, NJ) storm has passed, we can look forward to mostly pleasant weather this weekend. There's a slight hitch this afternoon as an upper level trough sweeps through the region. The lower levels of the atmosphere are so dry that the trough will most likely just produce a few clouds, but a brief late afternoon shower or two is not out of the question. Today's high should reach the upper 60s. more ›

Heat Is Gone (For Now)

Heat Is Gone (For Now)

You know the hot weather had run its course when the Times finally discovered that early morning was the coolest part of the day. Next up: Winter cooler than summer. Anyway, not only is the hot weather gone but today will be cooler than normal for the first time since Bastille Day. Look for a high in the low 80s under mostly blue skies. There's an itsy-bitsy chance of a few clouds late in the afternoon, but the are likely to stay north of the city. more ›

Very Pleasant Day Under Way

Very Pleasant Day Under Way

No watches, no warnings, not even a lousy advisory. There's not much of anything going on weatherwise today. The best it can do is a dying cold front about to pass through the city. No clouds or rain are associated with the front, so the subway series will get off to a good start, but it will produce a strong temperature gradient across the metro area. Look for highs in the mid 70s in eastern Queens increasing westward to at least the mid 80s in Newark. more ›

Sunny and Warm Weekend

Sunny and Warm Weekend

The storm that barely touched the city will continue to barely touch the city for a few more hours. A few inconsequential flurries or sprinkles may still fall but skies should begin to clear by early this evening. more ›

Warm And Warmerer

Warm And Warmerer

A quick look at the local National Weather Service website shows no watches, warnings, or advisories anywhere in the forecast zone. The lack of weather action is courtesy of a high pressure over the Tennessee Valley that is slowly moving eastward. That will bring mostly sunny skies and a high near 70 today in the Big Apple. Tomorrow promises to be even warmer as the high pulls warm air up from the Gulf of Mexico. Look for highs in the mid 70s. more ›

Lazy Labor Day Weather

Lazy Labor Day Weather

Along with many of us it appears that Mother Nature is also taking a lazy, long holiday weekend. Onshore winds circulating around a high pressure system centered near Nova Scotia will keep the high to around 75 today. There will be a mix of high clouds as a storm off the Carolina coast shoots some moisture northward, but no rain is expected. Perfect for a Carnival! more ›

Hottest Day Anniversary

Hottest Day Anniversary

While July 9th, 1936 had the highest temperature, 106, ever recorded in Central Park, today is the anniversary of the warmest day and night. August 7th, 1918 started out with a sultry low of 82 and warmed up to 102 for an average daily temperature of 92 degrees. Must've been a great day to be in an AC-less, fifth floor, one-bedroom tenement on Orchard St. that you shared with 20 of your closest friends and relatives. The Times reported that "tens of thousands went to Central Park to sleep, and hundreds lay in Bryant Park and other open spaces". The much more colorful Tribune quotes an "East Side boy" as yelling to his friend "Say, Emil, let's go over to the Bowery and watch the horses fall dead." more ›

Beautiful, Mild Day For First Day Of June

Beautiful, Mild Day For First Day Of June

June is welcoming us with some fine weather. WCBS 2 meteorologist Elise Finch says, "We are looking at, still, some very mild conditions...We start with lots of sunshine. The day will be a little cool to start, but we're expecting a high of 73 degrees. We're going to have breezy conditions for your Monday, [but] all-in-all, a very nice day - plenty of sunshine out there." Unfortunately, tomorrow will be cloudy (or partly cloudy) with a chance of showers in the evening; the temperature will hits the 80s before the front moves in, though. There may be showers on Wednesday morning as well. More on NYC weather at Weather Underground. more ›

Halloween Weather Treat

Halloween Weather Treat

From a forecasting perspective this has been a rare week where the weather has behaved as expected. The good behavior shows no sign of stopping and there's no reason to believe it will start acting erratically over the weekend. In addition to not pulling any tricks, it looks like ok Mother Nature will give us a fall treat. more ›

Warm Start, Cold End to Week

Warm Start, Cold End to Week

You know the old saying about how sausage is delicious but you don't want to see how it is made? The same could be said about this week's weather. Behind the scenes there's all sorts of goings on about back door cold fronts, high pressure systems, ridges and troughs and the like. The end result should be unseasonably warm conditions through Wednesday. Today's high in the city will be in the upper 70s. Tomorrow's high could be anywhere in the 70s, depending on how far east the back door cold front moves. Skies should gradually clear through Wednesday, when the high will again reach the mid 70s. more ›

Beautiful Columbus Day Weekend

There's not much to say about this weekend's weather other than enjoy! A high pressure system has decided to take a vacation over Cedar Point for the Columbus Day weekend. Super Sunny Wednesday Weather

Super Sunny Wednesday Weather

Today is shaping up to be a beautiful late-summer day. A high pressure system centered over Montreal will keep all but a few high clouds from the storm system formerly known as Fay well to the south of the city. The high today will be in the mid- to upper-70s. The warming from more southerly winds tomorrow will likely be balanced by more clouds to once again have a high in the mid- to upper-70s. more ›

Sunny Start to Wednesday

Sunny Start to Wednesday

The series of photos above were taken a few minutes apart as a rain storm moved over Manhattan earlier in the week. No such storms today. A high pressure system has brought dry air and a lot of subsidence to the city. The result will be a sunny and mild start to the day with a high right around the normal of 83. That's quite a change from the past week, which a turn to the cool side. August is now running 1.5 degrees cooler than average. more ›

An Easy, Sunny Day

Some days the weather forecast is pretty simple. Like today. Sunny, high in the upper 70s. Tomorrow's forecast is almost as simple: Mostly sunny and warmer, with a high in the mid 80s. The humidity will probably be on the rise tomorrow afternoon as the axis of high pressure moves eastward. more ›

Changeable Weather Ahead, Bad Weather Long Ago

Changeable Weather Ahead, Bad Weather Long Ago

Judging from the plunging dewpoints and jump in pressure a cold front passed through the city between 8 and 9 this morning. It is going to take a few hours for cooler air to arrive, meaning today's high may reach the upper 40s before cooling down after lunch. Clear skies tonight will allow for a lot of cooling and a strong westerly breeze will add to the chill. Tomorrow is looking sunny with seasonable temperatures. Expect a high around 47. more ›
