brooklyn bridge traffic, by Idle Type at flickrToday on the Gothamist Newsmap: a crime scene/hanging at East 13th St. and Shore Parkway in Brooklyn, a child mauled by a dog in the area of 91-43 Gold Rd. in Queens, and a possible escaped prisoner on Wards Island across from Manhattan. Asbestos removal at the Carroll St. F and G line station appears to be a non-issue. Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn received a note......

Shine a Light, the film documenting The Rolling Stones show at Beacon Theater in 2006, is about to hit the big screen. And the really, really big screen. The Martin Scorsese-directed rockumentary will be in both regular and IMAX theaters this April, and it won't be the first time Mick Jagger's lips have reached epic proportions; the band recorded their first IMAX concert in the early '90s. Check out the trailer for the latest one,......

Last year the Rolling Stones played two nights at the Beacon Theater (partly to celebrate Bill Clinton's 60th birthday - we guess Hillary will get Celine). It's just been announced that this September 21st Martin Scorsese will release a documentary filmed at the shows. The larger than life event will become just that in celluloid as it gets the IMAX treatment, but is the world ready for a 50-foot Mick Jagger? Well, it's not......

It's inevitable in a summer season of blockbuster highs and lows that we'd have a weekend filled with new releases none of which look good enough to recommend. Glancing ahead to the rest of the month there's stuff like Ratatouille, Sicko, Evening, A Mighty Heart and Evan Almighty to look forward to seeing. But this week? Nada. Don't believe that could possibly be the case? Check out what other early reviews of this week's releases......

Anna Wintour, Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière, and Cate Blanchett hosted last night's annual Costume Institute gala, which was a celebration of Paul Poiret, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Poirot was the pioneer in modern fashion, and freed women from petticoats and corsets - though many, even those in attendance last night, aren't familiar with him. Everyone did their best to dress "in the spirit of" the King of Fashion however, including: Mick Jagger, David......

Just a thought as we look ahead to this week's new releases. Someone should really take Diane Keaton aside to tell her that this series of increasingly painful looking romantic comedies where she plays an over-the-top meddling mom aren't good for her cinematic legacy. The newest installment is the Mandy Moore romantic comedy, Because I Said So, where Keaton plays a mother desperate to marry off her headstrong youngest daughter. Please Diane, after loving you......

Van Halen is back, and will rock the city. At least, those are the rumors that accompany news the band is hitting the road for the first time in 20 years with original lead singer David Lee Roth. We suppose if Mick Jagger is still at it - Roth can probably still "jump" at the age of 53 (though we hope he leaves the assless chaps at home). With Genesis, Rage Against the Machine, The......

Seems like "Factory Girl" may take a little longer to come out than originally thought. Bob Dylan and his team of lawyers want to stop the movie from seeing the light of day. Dylan says the upcoming Edie Sedgwick film falsely suggests he was responsible for her suicide. According to Page Six, the lawyers sent a letter to producers of the film, Bob Yari and Holly Wiersma, and screenwriter Aaron Richard Golub, demanding it......

Back in the day, music was taking some new turns, and with their sound - musicians were also taking risks with their wardrobe. The Times has an article on Mick Jagger's look throughout the ages and compares it to current day rockers. They talk to current bands on the rise, Born Ruffians and Akron/Family, both of whom say they don't exactly pay attention to what they wear. We bet they sort of do, because that......

We knew that people love Andy Warhol, but we didn't realize people would shell out over 10 grand for his wig. It sold well above Christie's $4,000-6,000 estimate, but maybe those three pieces of toupee tape stuck in it helped the valuation. Other Warhol items for sale included size 8 Ferragamo brogues and one of his Brooks Brothers ties, plus a Polaroids Warhol took of celebrities like Muhammed Ali and Mick Jagger. The items were......

This week the multiplexes seem practically flooded with new releases, in addition to the good things already out, so much so that Gothamist is starting to fall behind on our movie consumption. But never fear, we shall surely rally. Here's a few suggestions to guide your own weekend viewing. To get them out of the way first, there's two sequels coming out that might be worth your time if you fall into a certain demographic......

We were really knocked out by Mazarin at Pianos last week. Very fun band. One can only hope that this week holds such surprise awesomeness. Some potential candidates: Party-pop masters Ok Go (at left) made a hilarious choreographed dance video in their backyard that captures the energy and fun of their live show. Plus, ladies may just fall in love with frontman Damian Kulash's gigantic Mick Jagger lips. With dance punks Controller.Controller and spirited psychedelic......

The holidays are upon us. Tomorrow sees the release of two of the more eagerly awaited films of the season, and we haven't even hit Thanksgiving yet! We've been hearing fantastic things about the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. It wowed audiences at the Toronto Film Festival in September, and now critics are talking about Joaquin Phoenix's performance as they did last year about Jamie Foxx. One huge difference: Foxx lip-synced everything in Ray;......

Last night, Gothamist kicked up our feet, found some friends on IM, and watched the Golden Globes. We are suckers for anything that celebrates our two best friends, television and movies, even if it's all glad-handing and self-congratulatory, because the silver lining is that we can make fun of them. Things started immediately, as the Golden Globes are wont to do, with Renee Zellweger, looking skinny, in a brown cocktail dress, coming out to announce......

The news that the manager of Pop and Pop Burger, Tim Moore, was founded murdered at Pop on Saturday morning shocked co-workers and New Yorkers familiar with Moore's friendly, gracious demeanor. Moore, who managed the two Roy Liebenthal-owned restaurants, besides working at others (Lemon and Cafe Tabac), had been bludgeoned by a fire extinguisher during a robbery. Two employees, coming to work at 11AM, noticed blood on the floor and contacted police who found Moore's......
