Two groups of teenagers on an northbound 1 train got into a fight that ended up with two teen slashed. The fight started around the 59th Street/Columbus Circle stop or the 96th Street stop, and then it spilled out onto the platform at 110th Street/Cathedral Parkway. Two were slashed with a knife and another teen was beaten with a cane; all were treated at St. Luke's Roosevelt. A witness told WABC 7, "I was in my car and I heard screaming ... from downstairs ... bunch of boys ran out and then this other guy ran up."

Almost ten months ago, postal worker MIchael Steinberg was going to work and taking the train at 110th Street and Broadway. But then Tareyton Williams grabbed two electric, reciprocating saws from a Transit Authority contractor's work table and sawed into Steinberg's chest as he threatened passengers. Williams, who pleaded guilty after being found fit for trial ( in spite of him carrying a huge stuffed gorilla like a baby before the attack), was sentenced to 18 years in prison yesterday.
Tareyton Williams, who sliced through postal worker Michael Steinberg in early July with power saws he picked up from a contractor's area on a subway platform, was found mentally fit for trial. The Daily News' article's subtext, though, is that Williams must be at least a little off, given that he was "cradling the stuffed animal like a baby" before he attacked Steinberg at the West 110th Street 1 station. In fact, a defense lawyer not affiliated with the case says that doctors who evaluate defendants generally "set the bar very low," though Williams can still use an insanity defense. But there are some things we didn't realize: Williams had a bottle of Nyquil the night before the attack and he had worked as a bouncer at a Bronx strip club, and in an apology letter to Steinberg, he invited him to visit him at "Sin City." Williams is held without bail for attempted murder; prior to the subway attack, he allegedly punched a pedestrian on the street.
Tareyton Williams, who was arraigned for the attempted murder of Michael Steinberg when he grabbed two cordless power saws from subway workers at the 110th and Broadway subway station last Thursday, was ordered for a psychiatric evaluation at Bellevue. Williams was also charged with first-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon in the strange attack. Williams was captured after punching another Upper West Side resident a few hours - he was charged with that man's assault.
You have to hand it to Michael Steinberg - he is a fighter. The 64 year old postal worker, who was on his way to work when a deranged man sliced through his chest with a cordless Dewalt reciprocating saw yesterday, had a punctured lung and broken rib - not to mention the whole "sliced chest" thing - yet he still gave hospital bedside interviews with newspapers and TV stations to tell his side of the story. And what a story. The Daily News has his words about the experience at the 110th and Broadway station:
I was waiting outside to put my MetroCard through. I saw a lot of ... [construction workers] running away down the platform and I saw this guy with a hacksaw, or whatever the hell it was, running toward me.Continue reading "Man Slices Through Postal Worker at Subway Station"
