Michael Cosentino let us know that there was a big accident with a car jumping a curb at Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets. There are news vans out there, but none of the local news channels have any reports yet (WNBC has a flashing ticker, but only says there are many pedestrian injuries). Did an SUV run amok when native New Yorkers were jaywalking? Or did a tourist wander in the street to cause the chaos? Was the driver distracted by a Times Square billboard? Or was it an out-of-towner with one handing holding a cell phone, which is in violation of state law? At any rate, we hope the injuries are not life-threatening. It's also unclear whether or not other pedestrians tried to beat the driver or any of the SUV's passengers as they did in an incident last October.

Happy 2005, New York!
It's finally 2005, and many New Yorkers enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather (50 degrees) and headed up to Times Square for the festivities. It's unclear whether they were there for Lindsay Lohan or Reege. Perhaps it was to see Mayor Bloomberg and Secretary of State Colin Powell who, as the NY Times put it, "locked arms and swayed awkwardly to Frank Sinatra's version of ," because maybe they thought Powell would break out in song again [also, look at this photo of Powell and Bloomberg]. Some estimates say that over 750,000 people were in Times Square celebrating New Year's for the 100th time. And elsewhere, records were broken for the NY Roadrunners New Year's Eve Midnight Run (the champagne at the finish line was probably incentive; here are the top finishers) and the Critical Mass ride was pretty peaceful. Gothamist hopes that you and yours had a fun time...all we can say is huzzah for a new year and a new start, though we're apt to break any and all resolutions by the time we step outside the house.

Thousands Protest Bush and War On Convention Eve
There are, of course, conflicting reports of how many protesters actually were present: United for Peace and Justice said over 400,000, while the NYPD said it was closer to 120,000. The Daily News' Juan Gonzalez notes that in the end, Central Park made a guess about the attendance: "Suffice to say, you could toss the entire Republican and Democratic conventions together, and add a day's attendance at the Olympics in Athens, and still not come close to the number of anti-Bush marchers who filled Manhattan yesterday." UPJ organizer Leslie Cagan said, "I think it wildly exceeded our expectations. There's a broad cross-section of this country that is deeply opposed to the Bush agenda. That's just the tip of the iceberg. There's something much deeper going on here."
Primarily Primates
Monkeys have been getting a bad rap lately, so Gothamist thought it was nice of Michael Cosentino at Meccapixel to show them - their marmoset brethren, really - some love. It looks like there will be a series of Central Park Zoo photos coming to Meccapixel, so look out.
