The PR team over at Mercadito sent us a very disturbing email earlier today:

On Sunday, August 26, at 7:20 am Antonio Barranco Hernandez was killed, and Luis Romero and Augusto Bravo were seriously injured after a drunk driver slammed into the back of the van while the men delivered produce to Mercadito Grove restaurant, located at 100 Seventh Avenue South in New York City.

Okay, so you left it to the last minute once again. Never fear, there are still options for eating out on New Year's Eve. Time Out New York rounds up options for every budget, ranging from $20.07 snacks and apps at the Silverleaf Tavern (the bottomless glass of wine will cost you an additional $70, however), to a five course dinner at Cafe Gray including unlimited champagne and dancing for $550. Citysearch has a fairly long list, with most of the menus hovering around the $100 range, and Open Table lists restaurants serving their regular menus in addition to those with special New Year's Eve menus (we wouldn't mind spending our New Year's Eve at Blue Smoke, which is serving their regular menu that night -- any year is off to a great start with sidecars and ribs).

October 26: The Caffeine Question

The bad news is that Chowhound reports that Taqueria de Mexico on Greenwich Avenue has closed after over a decade of business. The good news is that, according to a follow-up post, "[t]he owner, José Hurtado-Prud'homme, told me he's opening a nicer (though not expensive) Mexican place in that space that will be open until the wee hours and will have a liquor license." I'm sure we can welcome another neighborhood late night taco choice in addition to Mercadito Grove and Diablo Royale.
