That was because the best player on the floor took over the game. LeBron ended up with 50 points and 10 rebounds, scoring almost at will when he wanted to. It’s a good thing the Knicks don’t want a player like that.

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to celebrate his accomplishments as a civil rights leader and to remember there is still work to be done in many areas, from racial equality to living a more peaceful, understanding existence. King's birthday is actually January 15, 1929, but the federal holiday has been observed on the third Monday of January since 1986 (the first time all 50 states observed the holiday was in 2000).

THEATER: Wolf Lane Productions presents Victims of the Zeitgeist (The Tragedy of Martin Luther King, Jr.), written & directed by Ellwoodson Williams. The production "offers an exciting and telling insight into just who Martin Luther King, Jr., was as leader and simply as a sensitive and intelligent human being who loved life and who had a sense of humor, a deep understanding of the human condition - its strengths and weaknesses - and a profound belief in justice."

There are a lot of obscure weather and climate statistics and records. Two of Gothamist's favorites are the record low high temperature and the record high low temperature. Yesterday we had one of the former. The combination of being in a cold air mass and under heavy cloud cover also tied 1911 (WCBS didn't give the exact date) as having the lowest high temperature of any day in August.

In June of 1972 (just months after his divorce) Elvis Presley performed a 3-day run at Madison Square Garden. These shows were the first full concerts he put on in NYC, and the first since he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. Excitement was in the air, and Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Art Garfunkel, all of Led Zepplin and half of The Beatles (John Lennon and George Harrison) were in the audience. Another notable name: some report Liberace was there and after seeing him in concert suggested adding flashy costumes into his act.

MOVIE: By now you've all seen, memorized and lived your own version of neurotic New York love story Annie Hall, the classic Woody Allen film that's stood the test of time. But have you seen it under the open night sky? Didn't think so. Get there early for a seat. Get there even earlier for knitting lessons!

READING: Just this morning she was sipping tea in the woods of Vermont - but tonight Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home, will be at Barnes & Noble on the UWS. Her book is a memoir, a graphic novel and all about growing up in a funeral home, with a closeted father. Tragicomic, indeed.

2007_04_education.jpgA jury has been selected in the trial of Peter Braustein, the journalist suspected of kidnapping and sexually assaulting over many hours a former colleague. Braunstein was the subject of a month long manhunt that took investigators from NYC to Memphis, where he was captured at the University of Memphis.

Now that he's been found medically fit to stand trial, jury selection has started in the trial of Peter Braunstein, the journalist who allegedly posed as a firefighter and molested a former co-worker on Halloween in 2005. The thing is 70% of the jurors questioned yesterday had heard about the trial and left, thanks to the moment-to-moment coverage of the case (exhibit A, B, C). But the NY Times said 30 prospective jurors who would be able to be fair remained. Can you imagine if you were on called to serve on that jury?

Yesterday, lawyers for Peter Braunstein, the journalist turned molester in a firefighter's costume, said that their client has a fractured skull with a brain hematoma. While they say they are not sure how he got the injury, an assistant district attorney told a judge that a Riker's official said it was "self-inflicted": "...the official said he banged his head on a sink in his cell, possibly in an attempt to delay his trial." Well, Braunstein did try to slash his own throat when authorities caught up with him in Memphis.

  • Senators 2, Islanders 0: So Rick DiPietro does give up goals. His perfect streak was stopped after more than 156 minutes. The fans booed Alexei Yashin whenever he touched the puck, but that didn't help the Islanders create more than 18 shots on goal.
  • -Boston 97 New York 90: The Knicks dug themselves a seemingly insurmountable hole in the third quarter, yet almost escaped. Down 30 points, New York staged a furious comeback and had two possessions in the last minute of the game down only by three, but they couldn’t get the job done.

-Knicks 98 Memphis 90: If you didn’t decide to snap up some low-priced tickets to the Garden tonight, you actually missed something. The Knicks won for only the second time at home behind another impressive performance from Eddy Curry. Curry was 9-13 from the field and added 15 rebounds to his 26 points and was only stopped by the refs when he fouled out.

Holiday season weekends are filled with traffic, shopping and gift wrapping. Wind down after your hectic weekends this December by spending your Mondays at The Garden with this special holiday offer from the Knicks.

Edie Sedgwick, "It" girl of the 60s, once said her colorful life could never be accurately portrayed on The Big Screen. However, now it is (though it's accuracy is in question). The actress playing Edie is Sienna Miller, has just finished reshooting some scenes for the movie (called Factory Girl) that is supposed to be out sometime in the next month.

Warm weather continues for the ninth straight day today as air gets pumped up from the south ahead of an approaching storm. It's quite a storm, too! Currently centered over Memphis, the storm is likely to kick off high winds, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes over much of the southeast later today. Say "hi" to a mild El Niño, as fall-winter severe storms along the Gulf Coast are more common when El Niño is around.

A year after the police's searching for Peter Braunstein, the journalist who molested a woman, he's in custody and awaiting trial. Now new court documents reveal his history of threats and what he was doing when running from the law. He apparently harassed three other women "upon being rejected on personal or business matters" in 2003 and 2004. The Post reports that he "repeatedly rang the buzzer at the home of one of the victims, whom he threatened to ruin professionally." Then, when he was on the run, he called people back in New York to threaten them if they testified.

-Knicks 118 Memphis 117 (Triple OT): New York almost wrecked their season in the first game. After building an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Knicks let it slip away and found themselves in a contest of endurance.

This is literally crazy: Peter Braunstein's lawyer filed papers for his defense of the former journalist who kidnapped and sexually abused a former co-worker last Halloween. Basically, his lawyer may argue that Braunstein is so mentally ill that he didn't realize that all the horrible things he did - setting a fire in the hall, impersonating a firefighter, holding a former coworker captive in her apartment while he tortured, assaulted and videotaped her - were wrong. His defense team has already called him schizophrenic, and his defense has been working on the defense with his not guilty plea.

When the Braunstein news comes, it doesn't stop. Just a day after he was sentenced to a year in prison for breaking parole self-styled "raving lunatic" and alleged faux-fireman Halloween-rapist Peter Braunstein gave a sit-down interview with the Daily News, his first time speaking publicly since he was arrested in Memphis last December.

Gothamist headed down to Manchester, Tennessee with over 80,000 other music fans from across genres and across the world to take in Bonnaroo 2006. Three days of some of the best bands around from Jam to Jazz to Rap to Rock. We were up bright and early Friday morning to get the weekend off to the right start.

It's the amazing event that pigs and cows fear most! The Big Apple BBQ Block Party took over a good part of the Madison Square Park area with ten different barbecue offerings along a few blocks on Madison Avenue and on 24th Street (we remember when it was only on East 27th!). The BBQ Block Party benefits the Madison Square Park Conservancy, and it was great to see everyone enjoying the event, from hauling loads of foods away in boxes to listening to the live music. Gothamist went hog wild and tried various meats offered by esteemed pitmasters from all over the country.

LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark "Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid." Is that a promise? They also give us this week's best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow.

When things are this bad, sometimes you just have to laugh. So, today take a moment and laugh at the cover of the Daily News. Laugh at the fact that Jim Dolan claims that the Knicks rebuilding job is in year 1 of a 3-4 year process, while his GM has had the job for two years already. Ok, maybe this isn’t going to be so easy to laugh at.

Steve Francis is obviously a quick learner; after only two games with the Knicks he is already trying to leave the team. Francis almost missed last night’s 121-93 loss apparently because his daughter was sick. The Knicks had given permission for Francis to go home after Saturday’s game to collect some belongings, but Francis wanted to extend his absence and called the team Monday morning to say he wouldn’t make the game. A plane was chartered (it’s not clear who paid for it) and Francis arrived at the arena 55 minutes before the game.

After a sluggish start, the Nets have won 12 of 15 games, including Wednesday's win over Philadelphia. Their recent streak has established their position as an upper-tier team in their conference (they lead the Sixers in their division by four games), but one that does not quite seem ready to handle the best teams in the league. For the first of these two characteristics, they have Vince Carter to thank.
