Cleveland 119 Knicks 105: If you were looking for a game where the Knicks should have beaten a quality opponent, this was it. New York battled Cleveland almost evenly over three quarters and although they ended up out-shooting the Cavs, they did not walk away with the win. That was because the best player on the floor took over the game. LeBron ended up with 50 points and 10 rebounds, scoring almost at will when......

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to celebrate his accomplishments as a civil rights leader and to remember there is still work to be done in many areas, from racial equality to living a more peaceful, understanding existence. King's birthday is actually January 15, 1929, but the federal holiday has been observed on the third Monday of January since 1986 (the first time all 50 states observed the holiday was in 2000). With the......

There are a lot of obscure weather and climate statistics and records. Two of Gothamist's favorites are the record low high temperature and the record high low temperature. Yesterday we had one of the former. The combination of being in a cold air mass and under heavy cloud cover also tied 1911 (WCBS didn't give the exact date) as having the lowest high temperature of any day in August. More fun facts! The high was......

In June of 1972 (just months after his divorce) Elvis Presley performed a 3-day run at Madison Square Garden. These shows were the first full concerts he put on in NYC, and the first since he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. Excitement was in the air, and Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Art Garfunkel, all of Led Zepplin and half of The Beatles (John Lennon and George Harrison) were in the audience. Another......

Looking for the country's best barbecue? Look no further than your own backyard. The Business Journal ranked New York City the nation's top destination spot for barbecue. Memphis is number 10. Ouch. Ever since Mario Batali blasted food bloggers on Eater, the food blog community has been up in arms, as one might imagine. Off the Broiler and Blogsoop are the latest to chime in. NYC Nosh visits Eight Mile Creek to try to shed......

Black Snake Moan (directed by Craig Brewer) Your movie contains the song "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp," and wins an Academy Award for it. How do you follow up the crowning achievement of writing and directing Hustle and Flow, a movie about the mid-life crisis of a Memphis pimp? If you're Craig Brewer, the obvious answer is to write and direct Black Snake Moan, a movie about a drugged-out nymphomaniac (Christina Ricci) who......

MOVIE: By now you've all seen, memorized and lived your own version of neurotic New York love story Annie Hall, the classic Woody Allen film that's stood the test of time. But have you seen it under the open night sky? Didn't think so. Get there early for a seat. Get there even earlier for knitting lessons! In an unrelated event earlier in the day, the folks from Knit New York will be teaching those......

READING: Just this morning she was sipping tea in the woods of Vermont - but tonight Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home, will be at Barnes & Noble on the UWS. Her book is a memoir, a graphic novel and all about growing up in a funeral home, with a closeted father. Tragicomic, indeed. 7pm // B&N [82nd & Broadway] // Free EVENT: Ever since the UnCoolKids uncovered a ton of science events citywide, we've......

A jury has been selected in the trial of Peter Braustein, the journalist suspected of kidnapping and sexually assaulting over many hours a former colleague. Braunstein was the subject of a month long manhunt that took investigators from NYC to Memphis, where he was captured at the University of Memphis. According to the NY Post, the jury is made up of seven men and five women. Nine have post-graduate degrees; there's a female lawyer, female......

Now that he's been found medically fit to stand trial, jury selection has started in the trial of Peter Braunstein, the journalist who allegedly posed as a firefighter and molested a former co-worker on Halloween in 2005. The thing is 70% of the jurors questioned yesterday had heard about the trial and left, thanks to the moment-to-moment coverage of the case (exhibit A, B, C). But the NY Times said 30 prospective jurors who would......

Yesterday, lawyers for Peter Braunstein, the journalist turned molester in a firefighter's costume, said that their client has a fractured skull with a brain hematoma. While they say they are not sure how he got the injury, an assistant district attorney told a judge that a Riker's official said it was "self-inflicted": "...the official said he banged his head on a sink in his cell, possibly in an attempt to delay his trial." Well, Braunstein......

Knicks 151, Pistons 145 (3 OT): For the second time this season, the Knicks played a triple-overtime game, and for the second time this season, they won. (Remember when they almost blew that opening-night game against Memphis?) Channing Frye hit a buzzer-beating shot to force the third extra session, and the biggest of Jamal Crawford's 29 points helped lift the Knicks. With the suspensions from the Denver brawl forcing Coach Isiah Thomas to use a......

-Boston 97 New York 90: The Knicks dug themselves a seemingly insurmountable hole in the third quarter, yet almost escaped. Down 30 points, New York staged a furious comeback and had two possessions in the last minute of the game down only by three, but they couldn’t get the job done. Eddy Curry had another great game, scoring 30 points and David Lee added 14 points and 13 rebounds, but the Knicks defense was what......

-Knicks 98 Memphis 90: If you didn’t decide to snap up some low-priced tickets to the Garden tonight, you actually missed something. The Knicks won for only the second time at home behind another impressive performance from Eddy Curry. Curry was 9-13 from the field and added 15 rebounds to his 26 points and was only stopped by the refs when he fouled out. Curry wasn’t the only hero, as David Lee had a great......

Edie Sedgwick, "It" girl of the 60s, once said her colorful life could never be accurately portrayed on The Big Screen. However, now it is (though it's accuracy is in question). The actress playing Edie is Sienna Miller, has just finished reshooting some scenes for the movie (called Factory Girl) that is supposed to be out sometime in the next month. Socialite, party girl, Warhol's muse...Sedgwick also inspired other artists in her short life......

Warm weather continues for the ninth straight day today as air gets pumped up from the south ahead of an approaching storm. It's quite a storm, too! Currently centered over Memphis, the storm is likely to kick off high winds, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes over much of the southeast later today. Say "hi" to a mild El Niño, as fall-winter severe storms along the Gulf Coast are more common when El Niño is around.......

A year after the police's searching for Peter Braunstein, the journalist who molested a woman, he's in custody and awaiting trial. Now new court documents reveal his history of threats and what he was doing when running from the law. He apparently harassed three other women "upon being rejected on personal or business matters" in 2003 and 2004. The Post reports that he "repeatedly rang the buzzer at the home of one of the victims,......

-Knicks 118 Memphis 117 (Triple OT): New York almost wrecked their season in the first game. After building an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Knicks let it slip away and found themselves in a contest of endurance. It wasn’t pretty most of the time, but the important thing is they found a way to win. Also important is that they won using only nine players (a rotation at last!) and with significant contributions......

This is literally crazy: Peter Braunstein's lawyer filed papers for his defense of the former journalist who kidnapped and sexually abused a former co-worker last Halloween. Basically, his lawyer may argue that Braunstein is so mentally ill that he didn't realize that all the horrible things he did - setting a fire in the hall, impersonating a firefighter, holding a former coworker captive in her apartment while he tortured, assaulted and videotaped her - were......

When the Braunstein news comes, it doesn't stop. Just a day after he was sentenced to a year in prison for breaking parole self-styled "raving lunatic" and alleged faux-fireman Halloween-rapist Peter Braunstein gave a sit-down interview with the Daily News, his first time speaking publicly since he was arrested in Memphis last December. So what do we learn in the interview? Well, "he was clean-shaven, relaxed and almost pleasant." The events leading up to......

Gothamist headed down to Manchester, Tennessee with over 80,000 other music fans from across genres and across the world to take in Bonnaroo 2006. It's the amazing event that pigs and cows fear most! The Big Apple BBQ Block Party took over a good part of the Madison Square Park area with ten different barbecue offerings along a few blocks on Madison Avenue and on 24th Street (we remember when it was only on East 27th!). Copy Cats We posted a few months ago that smoking among New York State high school students was falling. It seems that New York City high schoolers are following suit. Smoking among City students has fallen over 50% since 1997. Officials link this trend to increases in the cigarette tax as well as anti-smoking education. Or maybe its because they can't smoke in bars anymore? Running Mate The incredible weather last Saturday brought plenty of......

When things are this bad, sometimes you just have to laugh. So, today take a moment and laugh at the cover of the Daily News. Laugh at the fact that Jim Dolan claims that the Knicks rebuilding job is in year 1 of a 3-4 year process, while his GM has had the job for two years already. Ok, maybe this isn’t going to be so easy to laugh at. Dolan talked about needing patience......

Steve Francis is obviously a quick learner; after only two games with the Knicks he is already trying to leave the team. Francis almost missed last night’s 121-93 loss apparently because his daughter was sick. The Knicks had given permission for Francis to go home after Saturday’s game to collect some belongings, but Francis wanted to extend his absence and called the team Monday morning to say he wouldn’t make the game. A plane was......

There is nothing more crazy than reading the court papers about a crazy man: The Daily News has taken the time to read the records related to Peter Braunstein's various talks with the police. The suspect in the 13 hour attack of a Chelsea woman last Halloween has been at Bellevue ever since his arrest/suicide attempt in Memphis last December. The police have a rich and, we're sad to say, kind of hilarious blotter of......

After a sluggish start, the Nets have won 12 of 15 games, including Wednesday's win over Philadelphia. Their recent streak has established their position as an upper-tier team in their conference (they lead the Sixers in their division by four games), but one that does not quite seem ready to handle the best teams in the league. For the first of these two characteristics, they have Vince Carter to thank. Carter leads the team with......
