WNBC reports that the NYPD shut down a drug operation in a Brooklyn meat market--Sikorski Meat Market on Manhattan Avenue. The police had caught the drug dealers on wiretaps referring to "hot kielbasa," and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly explained, "the ‘kielbasa’ was really cocaine, and thanks to outstanding police work it’s no longer available at the meat market." More details: Livery cabs were used for delivering the shipments and "Polish and Dominican crews teamed up to run the ring" (hello, melting pot!).

Haru: The Japanese mini-chain’s takeover of New York is proceeding according to plan with the opening of their latest location in the financial district. The elegant, bi-level space (pictured) is located in the landmark 1903 Beaver Building, which calls to mind a mini-Flatiron Building. This location features two floors of dining to accommodate 160 guests, a 17 seat sushi bar, a second “alcohol” bar and two private party rooms. Like the other Harus, the extensive...

Are the munchies a side effect of cocaine abuse? The NYPD busted a multi-million dollar drug ring where buyers could buy their cocaine and deli meats. The police found 4.5 kilograms of cocaine ($175,000 worth) and arrested 25 suspects.

Seems like the Hotel Chelsea residents have long been at battle with the clubs that open in the basement of the building. This used to be the case with Serena (which was owned by Anna Wintour's stepson/Minnie Driver's cousin) and now with Star Lounge (which has opened in its place). The basement lounges seem to draw a posh crowd that's the antithesis of who the Hotel was founded upon: starving (or at the very least, quirky) artists.

Back when, as wee bit food junkies learning about the relation of pork bellies to bacon from Trading Places, we never imagined that bacon was already living a double life right in front of our eyes on non-breakfast menus, hiding as fatty pork down at places like Judy Doo’s Chinese Restaurant. Grateful for the early exposure, we were full-on joyful when chefs at innumerable restaurants in the early 2000’s began to prepare it every which way – roasted, brined, braised, grilled, often combining methods. Gothamist is also partial to using it mixed with pork shoulder for things like tacos and ragu at home.

This past weekend was the last stand for the Chelsea Flea Market, which will became the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market! Yes, you may or may not find bargains at 39th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues, in the shadow of the Port Authority, in the fumes of the Lincoln Tunnel, starting this weekend. The Village Voice interviewed Flea Market founder Alan Boss, who confirmed that he found a space for a flea market on Smith Street in Brooklyn, has a dim view of politicians, and says describes vendors as being "a cross between gypsies and circus people" (a good thing).

There's some scintillating High Line news: The New York Times reports that Dia Art will move its galleries from Chelsea to the entrance of the High Line at Washington and Gansevoort Streets:

The city owns 820 Washington Street and is supporting Dia's proposed museum, which must go through a public review and be approved by the city. Plans call for possibly demolishing the existing structure, an old meatpacking facility now in disrepair, and building a simple two-story museum with 45,000 square feet of gallery space on two floors. Dia's proposal includes provisions to expand the Gansevoort Meat Market on the West Street side of the building, said Michael Govan, director of Dia.
Further, people will be able to enter the museum from the High Line, the very idea of which makes Gothamist ooh and aah, because it raises the possibility of a different kind of vertical city, with layers of levels, like from Metropolis or any other sci-fi movie; we're still waiting for levitating Jetsons-like space cars. The Dia wants to create a space similar to the Dia Beacon, "a series of simple, raw spaces with skylights rather than a fancy architect-designed monument." Take that, Guggenheim/Krens/Gehry! The project is contingent upon a lot of approval, but our fingers are crossed.
