Today, the Court of Appeals will be hearing from lawyers about gay marriage in NYC today. Back in February 2005, a State Supreme Court judge ruled that gay and lesbian couples have equal access to marriage, but the city appealed and an appellate court reversed the decision. Which brings the case to the Court of Appeals. And though Mayor Blooomberg supports gay marriage, he does hope the city's lawyers will win, "I would never want to hire lawyers that tried to lose - they will try to win." Mayor Bloomberg wants NY State to decide whether gay marriage is legal, because it's all about the Constitution (his premise being if NYC starts to perform gay marriages, only for them to be overturned by the state later on, what good is that?). Anyway, Bloomberg claims he will ask Albany to allow gay marriage if the city wins...and if the city doesn't win, he'll let gay marriages be performed. Oh, to be a second term mayor! Gothamist hopes that if the State of Appeals rules in the plaintiffs' favor, then NY State will start to take up the gay marriage cause. At the moment, Governor Pataki won't touch it (of course) and Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has been cagey about it (he supports it, but it's not legal in NY State, though NY State recognizes gay marriages from other states).

With the 10th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade around the corner on Sunday, the Mayor is asking businesses along Fifth Avenue not to board up. In past years, violent incidents have caused damage to some stores and apartment buildings, making some owners think it's better to play it safe during the parade, which has had some controversy, most infamously the 2000 wildings in Central Park. For instance, the Post reports that metal fences are being put up at 1035 Fifth Avenue while tall green panels are being placed at 820 Fifth. Mayor Blooomberg is insinuating that these actions are an insult to Puerto Ricans, though some wonder if this is his way to gain Hispanic support.

The Daily News also mentions that Inwood area residents are planning to meet about safety issues tonight, at Church of the Good Shepherd on Isham Street, 7PM.

Mayor Bloomberg gave his thoughts on the East Village electrocution death yesterday, saying he was trying to get in touch with Con Ed Jean McGrath and that "It's just unacceptable that somebody can walk on a street and get electrocuted." [Con Ed responded, "We agree with him. One death is one too many. This is a tragic, unique event that has never happened before."] Then, Bloomberg knocked down the complaint that perhaps it's the chemical compound in the salt on the sidewalks and roads that might have been a better electrical conductor: "We have salt on the roads every winter." Finally, when ask what will be done to prevent another electrocution, Bloomberg said, "We'll have to see what we can do," after admitting, "I'm not an engineer." Good that he's owning up to that engineer thing, because Gothamist was about to ask him to rework the land surveys for the West Side Jets stadium.

The latest polls show that Mayor Bloomberg should be thankful he's got another job post City Hall: About two-thirds of New Yorkers would rather have another person as mayor. Possible Democratic challengers Fernando Ferrer and Gifford Miller have advantages over Bloomberg, as does the possibility of a Republican challenger (47% of Republicans would opt for someone else over the 36% of Republicans who would keep him). While the mayor's aides spin that there's no worrying about polls 2 year before elections, it doesn't do very much for the morale of his staff or for the morales of New Yorkers to hear that his approval has fallen again. It makes us question the possibility of anything actually happening in the body politic. Mayor B, you need to ratchet up your communications department. Gothamist would be happy to give you pointers on how to start your own blog for a little one-to-one constituent relationship building.
