The Mets also parted with Joe McEwing, their long-time utility player this week. Despite his poor play last year, Gothamist will miss McEwing who seems to have played hard every time he was given an opportunity. With five years on the team when he was released, McEwing was the 2nd most senior member of the Mets and the only player besides Mike Piazza that was on the 2000 World Series team.

In the first inning, Barry Bonds, the aforementioned huge-headed slugger hit a two run homer to put the Giants on top. The Giants and Mets could have saved everyone about two hours and called it a game. The Mets went on to only score one run despite getting eight hits, one more than the Giants had.
The good news for Mets fans is that the Mets finally returned to TV on Time Warner. Whether or not you want to watch the Mets is another issue. Time Warner and Cablevision settled their pissing match, which restored the MSG Network, Fox Sports Net, and a few other channels to Time Warner's 2.4 million cable subscribers in the area. The dispute over rights fees resulted in the channels being pulled on August 1st, affecting coverage of the slumping Mets, who are cover your eyes ugly anyway.
After 87 games, the Mets are at 44-43, barely over .500, but in a position few expected. They are in fourth place (that was expected), but are only 2 games out of first place in the NL East. Sure, their division isn't playing that well, but with the Phillies, Braves, Marlins and Mets all in the hunt for the pennant, it looks like the rest of the season will be exciting.
">their sights set on first place in the NL East. Richard hidalgo extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 1-5 but the offense came early and often from his teammates. Cliff Floyd, Ty Wigginton and Mike Cameron all homered in the 2nd inning off Phillies starter Brett Myers. Cameron added another home run in the 5th inning. Steve Trachsel pitched 7 innings, gave up a solo home run in the 7th inning, and improved his record to 9-6.
Two of the three errors were made by players out of their natural environment. Mike Piazza, playing 1st, had a fielding error when a ball bounced off his chest followed by a wild throw. Ty Wiggington, playing 2nd base, threw off target to home on a relay. Hopefully, Jose Reyes can make a quick trip up from his rehab assignments to step in at 2nd base. The third error was committed by Matt Ginter when he threw a ball high, pulling Piazza off the base. As for Piazza, Gothamist wonders at what point his deficiencies at 1st make him a lesser liability when he's behind the plate. Piazza has played more at 1st this season than as a catcher.
