The Wizard of Oz has really been updated for current times. Now, in addition to Toto, Dorothy carries a bag from the 5th Avenue Apple Store with her. At least that's what Dorothy, played by Ian Kennedy, did as part of the Yankees' rookie hazing tradition where green players dress up in crazy outfits. We expect this version of The Wizard of Oz to come to an off, off, off Broadway location in the post-season.

  • Yankees Sweep Tampa: When you send Kei Igawa and Matt DeSalvo out to the mound in a doubleheader, you cannot expect a lot of good to happen, but the Yankees’ offense changed that thinking. New York took the first game 7-3 behind some great hitting from Andy Phillips and the first career home run by Shelly Duncan and then took the second game 17-5.

  • Tri-City 8, Brooklyn 6: Eric Nielsen didn't get out of the second -- when Tri-City scored four runs -- and that didn't help the Cyclones, who couldn't peck away enough.

    • Chicago 6 Yankees 4Joe Torre always likes to say that momentum is all about the next day’s starting pitcher and tonight proved that. Fresh off a huge win in Boston, the Yankees squandered any momentum they had with a terrible performance from Matt DeSalvo. While nobody expected DeSalvo to be a savior, giving up three runs and six baserunners in 1.1 innings failed to meet the lowest of expectations. At least the Yankees may be able to count on Roger Clemens to fill this hole in the rotation the next time around.

    • Toronto 7 Yankees 2: At this rate, they will cancel “Yes’ Ultimate Road Trip” before August. At this rate, Roger Clemens might just give the money back and retire. Ok, maybe that won’t happen, but after another dreadful loss, it’s impossible to say what could happen next in Yankeeland. As per the recent norm, Monday’s loss was characterized by a complete lack of timely hitting. In three of the first four innings, the Yankees got a runner on second, only to strand him there.

That all changed in the ninth. After trading runs in the eighth, the Mets started the inning with Delgado earning a walk. Carlos Gomez came into run for him and promptly stole second. He scored on a botched fielder’s choice and then the floodgates opened. Reyes and Chavez singled home runs and Carlos Beltran doubled to make it 6-1. Only some nifty relief pitching by Randy Messenger kept the Mets from doing more damage, but they had scored enough even though Billy Wagner pitched a shaky ninth.

Darrel Rasner's broken index finger sends yet another Yankees pitcher to the sidelines for as long as three months, and necessitates that Joe Torre call up yet another young prospect to deal from the mound for the Bronx Bombers. The candidate making his Major League debut pitching at an away game in the high profile Subway Series at Shea will likely be Tyler Clippard, a righthanded 22-year-old. Just nine weeks ago, Clippard acknowledged that as the 7th-best Yankees prospect ranked by Baseball America at the start of 2007, he wasn't too dispirited by the lack of attention he was garnering in comparsion to some of his teammates. What a difference a few months can make!

  • Brewers 12, Mets 3: Jose Reyes finally got with it and had his head shaved, but it didn't do the Mets any good. It didn't do Reyes any good either -- he had a rare 0-for-4 -- but he can't be blamed for this loss. Mike Pelfrey, in danger of losing his rotation spot, allowed four runs in five innings. Joe Smith and Scott Schoenweis each gave up a trio of runs in garbage time.
  • Mariners 3, Yankees 0: By the time the Yankees return to New York, Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano could all be on milk cartons. They combined to go 0-for-11 as Jarrod Washburn shut down the Yanks. Abreu's struggles are the most concerning since he's the best hitter among the three and he hasn't walked in over 50 plate appearances. Darrell Rasner pitched well except for a two-run homer allowed to Seattle catcher Kenji Johjima. They'll need rookie Matt DeSalvo to help them stop their two-game skid Saturday.
  • Giants 9, Mets 4: Mets pitching put up plenty of zeros -- except in the fifth inning. That's when the Giants, aided by not one but two Bengie Molina homers, scored nine runs off Mets starter Oliver Perez and reliever Lino Urdaneta. Perez looked good otherwise and wasn't helped by the umpiring or a bad error by Damion Easley. The lefty still could have used better damage control.
  • With the news that Roger Clemens is returning to the Yankees, reactions from the local media and Yankee fans are generally positive. Clemens made the announcement during the 7th inning of yesterday's 5-0 win over the Seattle Mariners. After the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," Bob Sheppard directed the crowd to the owner's box for a special announcement. Only then did the public find out that Clemens would be returning to pitch for the Yankees, "Well, they came and got me out of Texas. I can tell you, it's a privilege to be back. I'll be talking to y'all soon."
