When Matilda the Algonquin Hotel cat updated her Facebook this week saying, "Getting my suitcases down and gathering up my toys—travel time is almost here," we worried that Mayor Bloomberg was booting her from the hotel, following some troubles with the Department of Health. Then Matilda added, "They think I don't know—but am being taken to the vet today for my travel check up—then to the passport office (ooops—am I telling you too much?)" When we tried to contact her via email, we got an out of office reply, saying, "Happy Holidays FURiends. Matilda." So, finally, we made the call.
Matilda The Cat Leaves The Algonquin... But Only For Four Months
Matilda The Algonquin Cat Banished From Hotel Lobby By DOH
Just months after her first fashion show, the city Department of Health & Mental Hygiene has sent Matilda the Algonquin cat into exile! The department has banished the cat from her lobby lounge, according to the NY Post, and she's now reduced to being on a leash behind the check-in desk, or lounges on a higher floor, away from where food and drinks are being served. A manager also told inspectors that they contained Matilda with an electronic fence.
14 Furbulous Photos From Last Night's Cat Fashion Show
Veronica Corningstone here, with a breaking report from the Cat Fashion Show that went down at the Algonquin Hotel last night. The city's most fashionable felines gathered at the intimate event, which at heart was a Debutante Ball celebrating the hotel's brand new Matilda. The purrfect centerpiece for the night was a cat fashion show, which the hotel holds every August—click through for a furbulous first look at the show. This catabulous event was a benefit for the North Shore Animal League, where the hotel adopted their new Matilda earlier this year... but can you believe some of the cats dared show up in the same outfits as last year? Embarrassing!
The Algonquin Gets A New Matilda
The Algonquin Hotel, famous for its round table and for its cat fashion show, has long had a resident cat named Matilda. The last one (nicknamed Tilly) just celebrated her 15th birthday at the hotel, and has since retired and moved to a stunning pre-war classic in Brooklyn (so we're told) with her primary caregivers. Enter Matilda III, who has now taken over the throne (or rather, a small chaise lounge in the front entry of the hotel). The Algonquin folk tell us that the blue-eyed Ragdoll kitty is from the North Shore Animal League (and looks just like Matilda II).
Outtakes From The Cat Fashion Show!
Wednesday night the Algonquin Hotel cat, Matilda, celebrated her 15th Birthday in the hotel's lobby, where a cat fashion show hosted by Must Love Cats host John Fulton was held in her honor. Our photographer Katie Sokoler told us she took an obscene amount of photos at the event, so here are some more (on top of yesterday's selection). By now Matilda's likely back to her regular schedule of roaming around the lobby:
We Were There: Cat Fashion Show at the Algonquin Hotel
Last night Matilda, the famous Algonquin Hotel cat, celebrated her 15th birthday—and we were there for total coverage. The party was held in the hotel's lobby and centered around a good ol' fashioned Cat Fashion Show—because what better way to celebrate than by making your feline friends dress up in ridiculous outfits and parade in front of humans? John Fulton, the host of Animal Planet’s new upcoming show Must Love Cats was on hand as the host—the show has been filming around the city all week for a NYC episode! When asked what his favorite costume was, Fulton told us, "Diva, the 4 month old rag doll, brought the crowd to a frenzy."
Michelle Williams Speaks Out From Brooklyn
With Heath Ledger's posthumous Oscar win this past Sunday, his only daughter Matilda has been thrown back into the spotlight. Her mother, actress Michelle Williams, was recently interviewed by the Telegraph in Brooklyn, the borough that mother and daughter are still calling home. In some of her first public statements about Ledger's death, she says she still feels "burned out," hasn't set foot on a film set since last May, finds the Hollywood lifestyle "a hassle," and spends her time these days "cooking, baking, cleaning and sewing." Clearly in no rush to film a big budget blockbuster, she did comment that she'd be "happy making movies for $300,000 for the rest of my life." Don't look for her to have an LA zip code though, she seems content in Brooklyn: "I can handle sitting here chatting in a bar in Brooklyn, that's right up my alley. I just don't want to strap a film to my back - fly all over the world and show up at lots of different places with a different dress and a new hairdo." As for Matilda, her mother has high hopes for her becoming a doctor, though adds that she's "currently more interested in being a cowgirl."
