Live John Hughes Musical Extravaganza Coming To Town

Live John Hughes Musical Extravaganza Coming To Town

Bless John Hughes and his infinitely quotable, excellently-soundtracked '80s gems—we're talking Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, etc. But for those who don't have time to watch them all in a row, a new musical has taken the liberty of curating the filmmaker's greatest musical moments, and putting them all together in the form of a live show, called, appropriately, For The Record: John Hughes. LAist loved it when they did a Baz Luhrmann edition a few weeks back, and the crew will be making their New York debut at City Winery on June 27th. Tickets and information available here. more ›

MySpace Submits to Facebook with "Mashup" Collaboration

MySpace Submits to Facebook with "Mashup" Collaboration

At a joint press conference with Facebook execs today, MySpace introduced a new feature called "Mashup," a redesign of the website which lets Facebook users easily create "a personalized stream of entertainment content." Facebook users who want to "opt-in" can now sync their Facebook profiles with MySpace, which is out of the "social networking" business and into the "sharing entertainment and music" business. Using "robust algorithms," MySpace will mine all your personal preferences to create a new, personalized way to interface with your "favorite bands, celebrities and movies!" Which is just what America needs! Instead of wasting another moment of our rapidly dissipating life force writing about this, we'll be taking the coward's way out and pasting the momentous press release below. Suddenly, we miss Tom. more ›

Map of the Day: Netflix By Neighborhoods

Map of the Day: Netflix By Neighborhoods

The mad scientists at the New York Times multimedia department have cooked up another insane mashup: heat maps for the top rentals in each zipcode in a dozen US cities. Some movies, like "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" seem to be popular just about everywhere (because let's be honest, who doesn't like Brad Pitt?) while others, like Mad Men and Tyler Perry's Madea Goes To Jail seem to be popular in specific neighborhoods (hint: Tyler Perry is not among the top 50 movies anywhere in Manhattan below 110th Street.) Biggest surprise: Twilight is astoundingly popular in the Bronx and Staten Island! Do you notice any other odd patterns? more ›

Subway Ad Mashups: Darth Vader Gets Murakami-ized

Subway ads are always undergoing transformation, but And I Am Not Lying recently spotted a more advanced form of subway ad art. He reports:

Those great big billboard ads you see on the subway are nothing but giant peel-and-stick Coloforms, really. I love the accidental collages you see when people randomly pick and peel those thing like they’re great big scabs, and I just knew it was a matter of time before someone started making art out of them.
That's Darth Vader with the Murakami eyes, and Princess Leia getting the Iron Man treatment. These ads were all spotted at the Lorimer L stop, has anyone seen something similar? more ›
