For the 25th year in a row, New York is set to be the subject of a naval invasion this month, when Fleet Week hits town, from May 23-30. The arrival of thousands of sailors on our shore has always been filled with secret gay sexy times and lots occasionally adorable missed connections. But with the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, one has to wonder: is this year going to be the gayest Fleet Week ever? Because it is already shaping up to be a doozy.
Will This Year's Fleet Week Be The Gayest Ever?
Christine Quinn Is Getting Gay Married, Were You Invited?
It has been two years since New York had a big political wedding to fuss over (Chelsea+Marc4Eva!) so thank goodness for City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, eh? The frontrunner to replace Mayor Bloomberg is planning to marry her girlfriend next month and the Times today looks at what that means. The big takeaway? With the possible exception of Barney Frank, who is leaving politics soon after he gets hitched, Quinn's wedding will make her the highest profile married gay in politics.
In Case You Were Wondering: Pope Is Terrified Of Gay Marriage
In January, Pope Benedict XVI used his annual address to the diplomatic corps as a platform to denounce gay marriage, calling it one of the major threats that could undermine "the future of humanity itself." With Maryland becoming the eighth state to legalize same-sex marriage last week, the Pope once again condemned gay nuptials, and came across sounding quite scared of "the powerful political and cultural currents seeking to alter the legal definition of marriage."
Video: Jon Stewart, Chris Christie And Fat Marriage Equality
After marriage equality in New Jersey was vetoed by Governor Chris Christie it was only a matter of time before native New Jersey boy Jon Stewart chimed in. And on last night's Daily Show he did—making an argument our commenters are quite fond of. Specifically, what if we made fat marriage illegal?
Americans Hot On Gay Marriage-Vetoing Christie's VP Prospects
Though the response to Chris Christie's veto of gay marriage in New Jersey has been unsurprisingly mixed in the Garden State (where a majority support marriage equality) it doesn't seem to have hurt the gov on the national stage—which was pretty much the point.
Chris Christie Vetoes Gay Marriage In New Jersey
As promised, New Jersey governor Chris Christie went and vetoed gay marriage in the Garden State today. It took him six hours from it reaching his desk to issue what he called a "conditional" veto of the bill.
Gay Marriage Passes NJ Assembly, Awaits Christie Veto
Game on, Chris Christie! Today the New Jersey Assembly joined with the State Senate and passed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in a vote of 41 to 33. But gays aren't going to be getting hitched in the Garden State anytime soon, not when Chris Christie has promised a veto!
Gay Marriage Passes 24-16 In New Jersey State Senate
And the complicated position that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has put himself in gets more complicated. Today the New Jersey State Senate voted 24-16 to legalize gay marriage in the Garden State and the bill is expected to pass again in the State Assembly on Thursday. But despite popular support for marriage equality in his state Christie, presumably eying future national elections, has vowed to veto the bill—meaning no gay nups on the Shore just yet.
Christie Sorry For Civil Rights Comment, Not For "Numbnuts"
The Chris Christie civil rights apology tour continues! After flubbing his first apology by going and calling a New Jersey lawmaker "numbnuts," the Garden State gov took to the airwaves yesterday to again apologize to anyone he might have offended when he suggested white Southerners should have been allowed to vote on civil rights gains for blacks in the 1960s. But he's not sorry about calling Assemblyman Reed Gusciora "numbnuts," okay?
Chris Christie: Blacks' Voting Rights Should Have Been Decided By Southern White Voters
Chris Christie has vowed to veto any gay marriage bill that passes his desk—causing him political headaches since it looks like he may have to put that vow to the test. Also giving the roly-poly governor of New Jersey headaches? A comment he made earlier this week suggesting white Southerners should have been allowed to vote civil rights gains for blacks during the 1960s. Let's just say some people respectfully disagree with the presumed 2016 GOP presidential candidate.
Chris Christie Really Doesn't Want To Veto Gay Marriage In NJ
Democratic lawmakers in New Jersey are really serious about their promise to bring marriage equality to a vote in the Garden State, and Governor Chris Christie is really serious about trying to get around them without upsetting either side too much. Today a Senate committee in the state advanced a bill on the topic in an 8-4 vote along party lines. Which gave Chrstie the perfect time to push instead for a voter referendum in November on gay marriage.
Bloomberg Joins With 75+ U.S. Mayors To Support Gay Marriage
Marriage equality hasn't just been good for gay New Yorkers—its also been good for the economy, Republicans, gay men's health, and religious recruiters. And now a group of mayors—including our own Mike Bloomberg—have teamed up to try and bring the freedom to marry to the rest of the country.
Pope Says Gay Nups Threaten "Humanity Itself" As NJ Vote Looms Again
Just as New Jersey is getting ready to put gay marriage back on the table an unsurprising voice of opposition has reared its head. Pope Benedict XVI in an annual address to the diplomatic corps yesterday said that married homosexuals were one of the major threats facing the family, threats that could undermine "the future of humanity itself." Because the Catholic Church has a perfect record there, right?
Gay Marriage Is Good For Gay Men's Health, Says Science
More good news for gay newlyweds (and even the not-so-newlyweds, too): getting married is good for your health! A new study from the American Journal of Public Health uses the power of science to prove that in states where gay marriage is legal, gay men visit doctors less and are generally happier with their lives.
Ridiculous Lawsuit Against NY State Gay Marriage Allowed To Proceed
Six months later, and some conservatives are still freaking out about gay marriage in New York—first, state clerks who opposed the move jumped ship, and now, an upstate judge has ruled that a lawsuit seeking to overturn the marriage equality law can proceed.
Upstate Clerk Who Refuses To Marry Gays Re-Elected
Rose Marie Belforti, the state clerk in tiny upstate Ledyard, New York who refuses to sign same-sex marriage licenses on religious grounds, has been re-elected and will serve another two years.
Archbishop Dolan: Gays Threatening To Sue Church Over Marriage Denials
Archbishop Dolan has no made no secret of the fact that he does not approve of marriage equality—but now, as JoeMyGod points out, he appears to just be scaremongering on the topic. In a long interview with Salt Lake City's Deseret News, Dolan claims that priests across New York are being threatened with lawsuits for not allowing gay marriages—even though the church's right to do so was one of the sticking points that almost held up marriage equality in New York in the first place.
State Clerk Refuses To Marry Gays, Refuses To Step Down
When the state legalized gay marriage over the summer, many people, gay and straight, were psyched. Some were not. One state clerk resigned from her post rather than sign her name on a gay marriage license, and now, another state clerk is refusing to sign same-sex marriage licenses. Only this time, she's not resigning.
Will Gay Marriage Turn Weiner's Old Seat Republican?
So, the Ninth District election in September could come down to gay marriage? The candidates in the increasingly tight special election for Anthony Weiner's likely-lame duck seat have been racking up unsurprising endorsements (Giuliani for Bob Turner! Schumer for David Weprin!), and that is all well and good. However it seems that the Orthodox Jews in the area are grinding their teeth over the logic Weprin used when he voted to support marriage equality in the state Assembly earlier this year.
The Internet Wants Bert And Ernie To Get Gay Married
Poor Bert and Ernie. The internet will just not leave the two best friend/ roommates/ ambiguous sleepover pals alone—once again, the duo's sexuality is being questioned, as a new petition circulates calling for the two to tie the knot. Were the Avenue Q puppets not enough?
Trouble In Dollywood: Gay Marriage T-Shirt Causes Controversy

With Gays Wed, New York Gets Into The DOMA Debate
Yesterday saw the first lawsuit trying to stop gay marriage in New York and today brings the opposite. The New York State Attorney General has filed a brief in the ongoing fight against the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) arguing that it violates the right to equal protection under the law for gay and lesbian couples.
Bible-Thumping Anti-Gay Marriage Protester Gets Confetti Bombed
While loving couples were making us all teary-eyed as they celebrated their marriage equality in New York State yesterday, others reacted with hatred and disgust, holding demonstrations that were as ugly as they were unsurprising. But while you might imagine gay marriage opponents would put aside their petty differences and unite under one banner of bigotry, it seems they couldn't help but bicker amongst themselves in the oppressive heat yesterday. Turns out the majority of the protesters were not fans of the Westboro Baptist Church members who flew up to protest, and Joseph Mattera, the presiding bishop of the Christ Covenant Coalition and protest organizer, told the Westboro crowd, "We denounce you." Not to be outdone, the WBC fired back with chants of "priests rape boys."
Photos: Dan Choi Cheers NYC Same-Sex Couples Getting Married
The first day of NY State allowing gay marriages meant hundreds of happy couples tied the knot yesterday. At the City Clerk's office in Manhattan, it was a joyous scene as couples waited for their numbers—yes, each couple received a number—to be called. Dan Choi, the former National Guard officer who was discharged after coming out, was on hand and ended up serving as a witness for the wedding of Lisa Winters and Eileen Scroggins, a couple who has been together for 13 years. Choi even got Judge Doris Ling-Cohan—the judge who ruled in 2005 that gay and lesbian couples in NY must have equal access to marriage—to perform the ceremony!
Bloomberg Happily Marries Gay Staffers At Gracie Mansion
Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg officiated the wedding of two of his staffers—his chief policy adviser, John Feinblatt, and Jonathan Mintz, the city’s commissioner for consumer affairs—at Gracie Mansion. It was only his third wedding ever (past weddings: Rudy Giuliani's marriage to Judith Nathan and his daughter Emma's marriage to Chris Frissora), which he referred to during the ceremony and asked Feinblatt's and Mintz's two young daughters for help, "I’m going to do my best - but if I slip up, Maeve and Georgia, feel free to step in and tell me what I’m doing wrong."
Photos: 484 Same-Sex Couples Married In "Land Of Equality"
It was a historic day as New York became the sixth state in the union to legalize same-sex marriage. According to Politico reporter Ben Smith, "484 same sex marriages in nyc today, per City Hall," including the two women in the photo above, Connie Kopelov, 85, and Phyllis Seagal, 77, who were the first couple married in Manhattan this morning. "I am breathless. The fact that it's happening to us, that we are finally legal and can do this like everyone one else. It's mind boggling," Siegel said after a ceremony at Manhattan's marriage bureau.
Photos: Gay Marriage Is Happening Right Now At City Hall
In the sweet spirit of matrimony, hundreds of couples who have dutifully waited since the passage of the Marriage Equality Act are currently in lower Manhattan getting hitched, and the gleeful photographic evidence is rolling in. We concur with the sentiment of Mayor Bloomberg (who officiated a wedding himself today), who wrote on Twitter: "Mazel tov & congrats to those getting married today, and to NY for marking a historic day." Stu Loeser, the mayor's press secretary is also on the scene, and noted: "Couples 2-6 exit to loud cheers from NYers & angry shouts of 'Stills get out of the shot!' That's #equality."
NYC Goes Oprah For Engaged Gays: Everybody Gets To Wed!
This Sunday is unofficially Gay Day in New York, what with legal gay marriages kicking in then in the Empire State. And thanks to the city of New York hundreds of gay couples are extra gay today, since they've gotten word that they will be allowed to say "I Do" on Sunday. In fact all 823 couples who entered a city lottery for a wedding slot have been given the all clear—even though the city had originally capped the gay nups at 764. “Everybody wins,” the City Council speaker, Christine C. Quinn, said in a statement. But in our minds she is running around like Oprah going "Everybody gets to wed! Everybody gets to wed!"
So Many Gays Want To Get Wed Sunday, So NYC Needs A Lottery
Sunday, July 24, is gonna be one big gay wedding day in New York. And not just because Niagara Falls will be lit up like a rainbow. So many couples have expressed interest in getting hitched on the first day of legal marriage equality in New York State that New York City can't accomodate them all! Instead, the city today announced plans to give out spots to marry on Sunday via lottery. All in all the city expects to marry 764 couples on Sunday, which if reached will break the city record for marriages in one day by more than 100! The previous high was 621 marriages on Valentine's day 2003.
