Last Night's Action: A Great Start

Last Night's Action: A Great Start

Yankees 6 Detroit 3: A lot of good things happened for the Yankees in this game besides the win. Start with Mark Teixeira getting off to a good start with a three-run home run. Add a Curtis Granderson homer off of a lefty, plus three great defensive plays. Mix in a perfect 7th, 8th and 9th from the bullpen trio of Joba, Soriano and Rivera and you have a very happy home crowd despite the miserable weather. The Yankees and Tigers will meet again Saturday. more ›

Making The Call: For Rangers, Making Playoffs Isn't Enough

Making The Call: For Rangers, Making Playoffs Isn't Enough

With a victory today the Rangers can cap off an impressive stretch of hockey with their fifth-straight playoff spot. It’s a wonderful accomplishment considering where the Rangers were on March 21st. But, it also obscures the truth- the Rangers are a team that is not built to win it all. Yes, the Rangers have some very good pieces but these pieces are not enough to overcome the overall lack of talent on the roster. more ›

Last Night's Action: Nothing Gained

Last Night's Action: Nothing Gained

On the plus side, the Rangers overcame a bad first period and won a game they absolutely had to have 4-3. But, they got no help from the Devils, who gave up a goal near the end of overtime to fall to Boston 1-0. Add in the win by Atlanta and the Rangers are exactly where they were this morning, two points behind the Thrashers and four behind Boston. Marian Gaborik scored his 40th to lead the Rangers with Olli Jokinen added a goal and an assist. For the Islanders, Blake Comeau scored twice. And for the Devils, Martin Brodeur stopped 33-of-34 shots he faced. more ›

Last Night's Action: Nets Win Eighth Game

Last Night's Action: Nets Win Eighth Game

Nets 93 Sacramento Kings 79: While a win would be good news for any other team, it's remarkable news for the New Jersey Nets. For those keeping track, this means that if the Nets can win one more game in their remaining 11, they'll tie the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers' for the most losses in a season (the Nets have lost 63 so far). more ›

Last Night's Action: It's Getting Late

Last Night's Action: It's Getting Late

St. Louis 4 Rangers 3: Most the season, Henrik Lundqvist has carried the Rangers when they couldn’t put the puck in the net. Thursday night, he was the problem, allowing four goals against sixteen shots as the Rangers dropped their second-straight. The Rangers took a 2-1 lead on Marian Gaborik’s 37th of the year, but the Blues jumped ahead with two goals in the second period. Wade Redden tied the game in the third, but Paul Kariya put the Blues up for good just over a minute later. more ›

Last Night's Action: They Should Have Taken a Snow Day

Last Night's Action: They Should Have Taken a Snow Day

Nashville 2 Rangers 1: You could pretty much predict the result of this game when word came out that Marian Gaborik wouldn’t be able to play for New York. But, New York’s offense generated plenty of shots, 38 in total, they just couldn’t get them past Dan Ellis. Henrik Lundqvist played very well, but the two goals he allowed were one two many for the offensively-challenged Rangers more ›

Last Night's Action: An Offensive Explosion

Last Night's Action: An Offensive Explosion

Rangers 8 Tampa Bay 2: Granted Montreal and Tampa are hardly powerhouses in the NHL, but this offensive explosion from the Rangers is impressive. Following Sunday’s six-goal effort, New York netted eight goals on Tuesday. Sixteen different Rangers recorded at least a point with Marian Gaborik getting four, all assists. A different Ranger scored each of the goals and five players had two points each. It was an easy night for Henrik Lundqvist who stopped 21-of-23 shots. more ›

Last Night's Action: Rangers Showing Life

  • Rangers 4, Panthers 1: Marian Gaborik scores? What else is new? He now has 26, still tops in the NHL. Vinny Prospal's two goals, now those were a surprise. He hadn't scored in 14 games. Chris Drury added the Rangers' first goal as the Blueshirts rolled to their fourth straight win. What's gotten into them? This is the best streak the Rangers have been on since they won seven straight after losing their first game. They play the Islanders for the third time in 11 days on Saturday.

Last Night's Action: The Losses Keep Coming

The Rangers have problems right now. Some of those problems are on defense where they give up too many chances to the other team. Some of those problems are on offense where it seems like Marian Gaborik is the only player capable of scoring a goal on any given night. All these problems were on display Monday night as the Rangers fell 5-2 to Pittsburgh. New York came back from two one-goal deficits thanks to Gaborik’s 20th and 21st goals of the season. But, Mike Rupp broke up the tie in the third with his second goal of the game and eventually finished with a hat trick as the Penguins put the game away. more ›

Last Night's Action: 58 Saves!

Last Night's Action: 58 Saves!

  • Islanders 4 Toronto 3 (OT): Dwayne Roloson made an amazing 58 saves as he carried the Islanders to victory. Despite Roloson’s heroics, he did surrender a 3-0 lead as the Maple Leafs were rewarded for all their tenacity in the offensive end. But, Josh Bailey scored the game-winner in overtime, rewarding Roloson with a well-deserved win.

Last Night's Action: No Wins Here

Last Night's Action: No Wins Here

  • Washington 4 Rangers 2: Marian Gaborik had two goals, but it wasn’t enough as Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals beat the Rangers again. Gaborik tied the game with his 15th goal of the year in the third, but the Caps added two goals in the final five minutes for the win. more ›

Last Night's Action: Game 1 To Philly

Last Night's Action: Game 1 To Philly

  • Philadelphia 6 Yankees 1: The Yankees looked like a team totally overwhelmed by circumstances while Cliff Lee looked like Orel Hershiser in 1988. CC Sabathia was good, allowing only two runs, both solo shots to Chase Utley, but Lee was much better. He dominated the Yankees, going the distance and he probably would have had a shutout if Jimmy Rollins hadn’t airmailed a throw in the ninth. The Yankees bullpen imploded in the 8th and 9th with Phil Hughes and Brian Bruney the chief culprits. New York will have to hope for a better result against Pedro Martinez in Game 2.

Last Night's Action: Back On Track

Last Night's Action: Back On Track

Rangers 5 Phoenix 2: New York got back on track, thanks to two goals from Marian Gaborik, but Gaborik also had to leave the game in the third period with an obvious limp. Gaborik stressed after the game that the injury he suffered had nothing to do with previous injuries that limited him in the past few years. But, he wasn’t sure when he would return to the ice. Vinny Prospal added a goal and two assists while Enver Lisin had two points.
  • Montreal 3 Islanders 2 (OT): Jeff Tambellini’s second goal of the night tied the game late in the third, but the Canadiens scored in OT to send New York home with a loss, but a point.

Making The Call: These Rangers Are Different

Making The Call: These Rangers Are Different

The Rangers have jumped out to a 7-1 start which is evoking comparisons to last year’s squad which won it’s first five games, but then faltered through the rest of the season before blowing a 3-1 lead in the playoffs. And while it is too early to predict that the 2009-10 Rangers will avoid walking the path that the 2008-09 Rangers did, some important differences have emerged. more ›

Last Night's Action: Six Straight

Last Night's Action: Six Straight

  • Rangers 4 Los Angeles 2: The biggest difference between this year’s hot start and last year’s is scoring. In 2008, the Rangers got out to a 6-1 start, but only scored 17 goals. This year they have 28 and Marian Gaborik is a big part of that. Gaborik scored his sixth goal of the season on a beautiful play in the third period and Vinny Propsal added two goals of his own. Henrik Lundqvist did the rest, making 34 saves.

Making The Call: The Rangers Need A Plan

Making The Call: The Rangers Need A Plan

For almost 24 hours, he fooled you. You could almost believe that Glen Sather finally had a plan for building a championship hockey team in New York. Somehow, he had managed to trade a seemingly untradeable contract in Scott Gomez, creating cap room and getting a nice prospect in addition. more ›
