Knuble escaped the collision with fractures to his cheekbone and orbital bone. He is expected to have surgery when the swelling goes down. Shanahan wasn't the only Ranger forced to leave the game because of injury. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist and defenseman Marek Malik both left the game with shoulder injuries.
Honoring the Past
Trottier, Smith, Bossy, Potvin, the great names of the Islanders’ past came together last night for a celebration of their 1980 Stanley Cup championship. While seeing all the past greats was a thrill for the fans, the current Islanders looked pretty good too. Chris Campoli scored the game-winner midway through the third period and Trent Hunter added an empty-net goal to give New York a 4-2 victory over Philadelphia.
Dominating
The Rangers served notice last night that they are ready to take on the best teams in the NHL. New York totally controlled their game with league-power Ottawa, beating them 5-1. The win keeps the Rangers in first place and brings them within three points of the Senators for second place in the conference.
Knocked Out
This is a game that may come back to haunt the Rangers later in the season. Facing Buffalo, which was two points behind them in the conference standings, the Rangers came out flat and played a sloppy game falling 2-1 to the Sabres. The news was not all good for Buffalo’ which lost their leading scorer, Tim Connolly’ to a knee injury after a hit by Darius Kasparaitis that some felt was a dirty play.
