NYMag reports on the hard times hitting McSweeney's after their distributer hit their financial bottom: "McSweeney's book distributor filed for bankruptcy six months ago, and the indie-cooler-than-thou publisher has now realized it's out some $130,000, which it kind of needs." McSweeney's says:
they're so great online - okay, you can read it, you Time subscribers - so we'll just speculate that Time was upset that an early pick of "Mother Nature" was leaked. And besides, what sells more magazines than one of the world's richest men and his do-gooding wife and an Irish rocker who rocks the sunglasses every chance he can? After all the hubbub about the resignations of New York Times Executive Editor Howell Raines and Managing Editor Gerald Boyd, Jayson Blair has been the hot get, since it's widely considered that his behavior caused their downfall. Newsday interviewed Blair in SoHo yesterday and reports that Blair said "he awoke at 11 a.m. Thursday, washed down a mood stabilizer with cranberry juice, then turned on his computer and learned about the resignations through an e-mail from a CNN producer."
The New York TImes Executive Editor Howell Raines and Managing Editor Gerald Boyd answered employee questions at a town hall meeting yesterday, and said he won't quit. The Times' own media reporter, Jacques Steinberg, wasn't allowed to report on it, but we're sure that any Times employee bulletin board is the hot place to go - tips? Newsday says it's tough times for Raines.
