The weather outside may be frightful, but that's not going to stop the NBA from tipping off their 2008-2009 season in Union Square. Starting earlier this morning and ending at 7PM, the NBA Tip Off Celebration will feature past NBA stars and current Knicks players. From 12-3PM, former Knicks players John Starks, Charles Smith, Kenny "Sky" Walker, and Clyde Frazier will be on hand with the Knicks City Dancers. Presumably, it will be frowned upon to ask Starks about the 1994 NBA Finals and Smith about the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals. If nostalgia's not your cup of tea, current Knicks players David Lee, Nate Robinson, Malik Rose and Danilo Gallinari will be on hand from 4-6PM. While the first regular season NBA game is tonight, the Knicks and Nets don't start their seasons until tomorrow.
Nigel Dawes got the Rangers on the board near the end of the third period as he converted a power play chance. Scott Gomez who assisted on the first goal followed with a goal of his own, setup by a great screen from Chris Drury at 3:53 of the second. Then the fights started, a linesman took a skate to the face but the Rangers and Valiquette kept their focus and got the win.
The Lakers cruised to a 70-45 lead and then had to hang on against a Knicks’ rally that happened with the unit of Nate Robinson, David Lee, Malik Rose, Jared Jeffries and Jamal Crawford playing most of the minutes. What changes are coming? It’s hard to say, but a good start would be splitting Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph up. Let’s just hope Isiah doesn’t start making trades.
Yesterday's Knicks practice was cancelled so that the entire team could attend the funeral for Don Marbury, father of Knicks captain Stephon Marbury. Don Marbury died during the Knicks' Sunday night game. Despite being a team often criticized for lacking chemistry, they all stood together at the Coney Island Gospel Assembly on Neptune Ave. to support their point guard during his difficult time. Malik Rose spoke on behalf of the team to the 600-plus...
Five minutes into the third period, Matt Cullen unleashed a vicious slapshot that caromed off the top crossbar and appeared to bounce out of the crease. Replays showed the puck had bounced down into the goal and the Garden erupted when the tally was put on the scoreboard.
With Jamal Crawford out for the year and David Lee and Nate Robinson sidelined, the Knicks went some different lineups and some different players and it all worked out. Mardy Collins, Malik Rose and Steve Francis all made significant contributions while Quentin Richardson led the team in rebounds to go along with his 30 points. Stephon Marbury added 34 and Eddy Curry had 22 in the win.
Those are the words of Quentin Richardson and they are truly the best way to sum up the current state of the Knicks. After last night’s 105-90 loss, the team held a 20-minute meeting behind closed doors.
Gothamist is going to embrace the positive and report solely on the good things that happened to the Knicks last night. After all, when a team wins for only the third time in twenty-five games, it is a cause for celebration. Yes, the Knicks won last night and on the road against a team fighting for a playoff spot as well. So, let’s enjoy the 103-98 victory.
At least the Knicks are making progress. Normally a 84-79 loss to the Clippers like the Knicks suffered Wednesday wouldn't be cause for celebration. This loss isn't either, but at least Gothamist saw some signs of life in the Knicks. Of course, everything is relative for a team that is 6-12.
After a 2-4 road trip through the West, the Knicks returned to Madison Square Garden to avenge one of the road swing's losses in a 103-92 win over Portland Sunday. Stephon Marbury had his best game of the season (27 points, 8 assists) and outshone Sebastien Telfair, the Trail Blazers point guard and Marbury's cousin. Although the Knicks earned their third victory, Gothamist still sees plenty of things to be worried about.
A marquee matchup? Not so much. That said, the Knicks will take it. Stephon Marbury had 31 points and Malik Rose added 18 against his old team as the Knicks beat the Spurs 88-75 last night at the Garden. The game was rather messy, as 2-time MVP Tim Duncan, Kurt Thomas, and Penny Hardaway all missed the game due to injury. A gimpy Manu Ginobili (who has a groin injury) played, but rarely contributed in the contest.
After weeks of heartbreaking losses, the Knicks are starting to turn it around. They won games with Philly and Indiana last week, and continued the streak with an OT victory against the LA Lakers last night at MSG. Despite blowing a 12-point lead in the final 2 minutes, the Knicks rallied and actually pulled one out at the end.
