Governors Island Will Be Closed Every Weekday To Undergo $300M Makeover This Year

The Landmark Preservation Committee has approved plans for alterations on Governors Island, specifically within the Historic District. The $300 million facelift has been discussed for quite some time, and is now expected to be complete by October 2013. Due to the ongoing renovations throughout this year, the island (which is currently closed for the winter) will only be open on weekends when it reopens. more ›

Is LaGuardia Finally Getting A Makeover?

Is LaGuardia Finally Getting A Makeover?

It's not often that we agree with Donald Trump, but he was right when he called LaGuardia a "third-world airport"—okay, maybe he's exaggerating a bit, but we back his sentiment. It's crowded and dirty, with the saddest Auntie Annie's pretzel stand we have ever seen—even the Port Authority boss says it's a dump! But could the much-maligned airport finally be getting a makeover? more ›

Thank You, Universe: Joe's Pub Gets A Makeover

Thank You, Universe: Joe's Pub Gets A Makeover

The concert gods are smiling upon us today! We just received word that Joe's Pub will be shutting down for three months, starting July 1st, for a much needed makeover. If you've ever tried to see a show there without reserving a table, you know that you need to arrive well before showtime to get a seat, or even to get standing room with a view of the stage. (True story: we once "watched" an entire Suzanne Vega show there, standing in the hallway, unable to even see the audience.) That's all about to change, as original designer Serge Becker gets a second chance and will be stepping in to renovate the space, which will now be completely seated. more ›

Extreme Makeovers For Worst Subway Stations

Extreme Makeovers For Worst Subway Stations

Way back in 2009 the MTA released a list of the worst subway stations after assessing conditions across the city; coming in at #1 was the Seneca Avenue (M line) station in Ridgewood, Queens. At the time, the agency promised that 25 of the stations would get major overhauls sometime over the next 5 years. Well, now that number is up to 29, and allegedly work will start at some stops this year. more ›

Stylist Tells Tom Brady To Get A Damn Haircut

Stylist Tells Tom Brady To Get A Damn Haircut

A few days ago, Randy Moss finally had the courage to tell Tom Brady what everyone was thinking: you look like a girl. And the nation's stylists agree! In a feature imagining NFL Quarterbacks with different hairdos, the Wall Street Journal shows a few professional stylists a photo of Tom Brady with a short buzzcut and one with his new, flowing mane. Stylist Rodney Cutler said, "Looks good, but he's trying too hard to be stylish. Relax." more ›

JFK Runway Makeover Finishes Ahead Of Schedule

JFK Runway Makeover Finishes Ahead Of Schedule

Jim Steven, the Port Authority manager in charge of the project to renovate JFK's longest runway (13R-31L), showed us around his job site earlier this month, telling us his deadline was a firm July 1st; "They gave me 120 days, not 121 days." Well, it looks like Steven & Co. will be able to enjoy the holiday weekend after all, because they've finished ahead of schedule! Cause for celebration in a city that rarely makes deadline, no? more ›

Mom's Sting Prompts Motion to Overturn Murder Verdict

Mom's Sting Prompts Motion to Overturn Murder Verdict

Last week, Doreen Giuliano revealed that, after transforming herself from 46-year-old Brooklyn mother to a sexy and single 30-something transplant from California, she recorded conversations with a juror who helped convict her son John Giuca of murder--and that the juror implied he should never have been on the case! Now those conversations are the basis for a motion to overturn the verdict filed by Giuca's lawyer yesterday. The NY Times reports that the motion says juror Jason "Allo failed to reveal to the court that he knew members of the so-called Ghetto Mafia, a gang that figured prominently in the trial...The court papers also accuse Mr. Allo of reading newspaper accounts during the trial, and of being 'the first one on the jury' to vote guilty, because of information he had gathered outside the courtroom." Allo has denied the claims and the Brooklyn DA's office, whose prosecution Giuliano and even the murder victim's family have criticized, says it "will carefully review the papers and will have nothing to say until that process is completed.” more ›

Manhattan Bridge Archway Getting Makeover

Manhattan Bridge Archway Getting Makeover

The Manhattan Bridge archway reopened in September to the applause of many local pedestrians (and those who interpreted it as a parking lot!). However, for the past couple of weeks the space has been closed off. We sent an inquiry to the DUMBO Improvement District, and they told us, "To ensure public safety, the Archway is closed temporarily while its historic Belgian block roadbed is restored. This work is...part of our plan to return the Archway to the public as a pedestrian plaza." So sit tight DUMBO-ites, the archway will be back up and running (hopefully by next year)...until then, you'll just have to make do with stabber alley. more ›

Governors Island All the Rage

More than 100,000 people have taken the free ferry over to Governors Island so far this year, up from 56,000 in 2007 and 26,000 in 2006. Today the Times takes a look at the 172-acre island's new-found popularity among everyone from crowd-surfing punks to exuberant swing dancers. If only those groups could one day share the same dance floor! more ›

Governors Island Makeover to Start Soon

             + 1 more

Preliminary work could begin as soon as next month on the ambitious $500 million plan to transform Governors Island into a premiere destination for cyclists, nature lovers, large-scale music concerts and rock climbing. Last December a consortium of five design companies was chosen to turn the flat southern part of the island into an oasis with manmade hills and a shoreline promenade. Ultimately (say, 2013?) 90 acres of parkland will be remade for anyone willing to take the seven minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan. more ›
