Woman Drives Wrong Way Across Tappan Zee Bridge

Exactly two weeks after Diane Schuler's fateful wrong way drive and crash on the Taconic left eight people dead, a woman was pulled over after driving across the Tappan Zee Bridge in the wrong direction. The 75-year-old woman from Irvington made it two miles across the bridge to the Rockland County side before being stopped by state troopers. She told that them that she was aware that she had been driving the wrong way, but kept going because she thought there would be a place to make a U-turn. The woman had even gone through the tolls in the wrong direction—the TZ toll lanes have no arm to block her. She ended up driving in the wrong direction from the Westchester side after she accidentally entered the off-ramp from the highway, missing her exit to get on the Major Deegan Expressway. Police ticketed her for improperly entering a highway, driving in the wrong direction and reckless driving. The incident took place ominously close to where Schuler's deadly drive went haywire, accidentally getting on the Saw Mill Parkway in Tarrytown before heading back toward the Taconic.

Two Dogs Run Onto Major Deegan, One Injured

WABC 7 has Newscopter 7 footage of two dogs that ran onto the Major Deegan Expressway and reports: "Just before 6:30 a.m., a 9-year-old male yellow lab chow mix ran onto the Major Deegan Expressway and was hit by a car at exit 3. That's when another dog ran to the rescue, right there on the busy highway. Like a protective parent, the dog wouldn't let anyone near. Barking at traffic and police, even as they tried to help." The police eventually managed to get the injured dog into a cruiser and tried to catch the other dog, but the pup took off. The injured dog, who has a broken leg and maybe internal bleeding, was taken to Animal Car & Control in East Harlem. The dogs' owner called AC&C after seeing the pooches on TV and picked up the injured dog and took him to the an animal hospital (he said the other dog was back at home).

Two years ago, we wondered if there was a big list of all the fountains in New York City. We haven't made that much progress with the list, but at least now we have a list of the "display fountains" the Parks Department maintains. And it's interesting - Brooklyn only has three while Staten Island has eight. Of course, there are many fountains outside of the Parks Department's jurisdiction (for instance, the fountain outside the Brooklyn Museum), so if you can help remind us of others in the comments, that would be great.

Rap star DMX will face charges after causing a car accident on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx. DMX apparently hit a car, which then bumped into the worst kind of car to bump into: A police cruiser. WNBC says that DMX was arrested on similar charges a month ago, which made Gothamist wonder that if DMX gets pitches for him to star in a sitcom where he plays a rapper who isn't allowed to drive anymore, so he makes his record label's college intern drive him; ideally, the college intern would be some square white kid for a hilarious clash of cultures.

Gothamist loves the NY Times article about the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge being too fat, because for a moment, we thought, "Hey, that's not nice, calling a bridge fat!" But then it was actually an interesting (and a little scary) look at how the suspension bridge is being re-engineered, with new technology and materials, to make sure it can support the traffic in the future. For instance, Robert Moses had engineers add concrete to the bridge; to stop the swaying (even though it was still safe), and in order for drivers to perceive it was stable, cables were added, which some people have felt ruined the skyline.
