This Thursday many bands will come together for The Gift of Noise Benefit that has been organized to help Kia Nowotne.

Friday the 13th stopped being scary for us when we were younger, rebellious and declaring things like "13, in fact, is our lucky number". We embraced the superstition and turned it in to our lucky day. Or, as it turns out, just another day. Anyway, we were hoping that some theater in this city would be showing Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan, but no such...luck. You'll have to deal with these other non-scary events:

As if there isn't enough to do this week we thought we'd give you some more ideas, because if there is a week that you should forego sleep it's this one. We won't supply the toothpicks to keep your eyes open but we will give you a list of things we think you should check out...

The Thrills have a great new album, Let's Bottle Bohemia (I hear a bit more pop and less California country), and are stopping by Irving Plaza tonight. The much-buzzed-about and Mercury Prize-nominated band The Zutons are opening the show. If your wallet is a little light these days, don't fret. The Thrills are playing at Tower Records at 4th and Broadway tonight at 6pm.

Our good friends, the band Tiger Mountain, are playing at Tis Was, which is at Don Hill's, this Saturday night, 9:30PM. Some of their press has compared their sound as being like the Kinks, Yardbirds, The Replacements, The Flamin’ Groovies, pre-sucking Soul Asylum, and the Stones. Gothamist would simply say that Tiger Mountain brings it and rocks out. You can listen to some of their songs here. And another Tiger Mountain Gothamist loves: Tiger Mountain at the Bronx Zoo!
For other bands to check out this weekend, check out Coolfer's Music Picks. And there's a great new Gothamist Arts & Events feature, Sets and the City, where our team of music lovers profiles and interviews some of the city's band. The first interview is with Madison Strays.

[ is a new section for Gothamist Arts & Events written by Karen Ruttner, Jen Carlson and Janelle Gunther. Check back weekly for new profiles and interviews with the bands that make this city tick.]
