At today’s press conference where Sirius XM was expected to announce him as their newest on-air host, it was revealed that Mad Dog is getting an even bigger bite of satellite pie: he’ll have his own twenty-four hour channel, “Mad Dog Radio.”

After two seasons of constant trade speculation, the Mets finally have moved Lastings Milledge in a deal this afternoon to the division rival Washington Nationals. In return, the Mets receive Outfielder Ryan Church and Catcher Brian Schneider. Milledge was not always a model citizen as a Met, either on the field or of the field, but nonetheless had been long touted by the organization and the media by a top tier outfield prospect. While he...

This just in: Imus just got canned by CBS. He's live on the air now doing a fundraiser-- so you wonder how he's taking the news. Word is that Mike and the Mad Dog will be filling the spot starting tomorrow.
"From the outset, I believe all of us have been deeply upset and revulsed by the statements that were made on our air about the young women who represented Rutgers University in the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship with such class, energy and talent," CBS CEO Leslie Moonves said in a statement.Continue reading "Imus Implosion: Fired by CBS"
This morning, NBC News President Steve Capus appeared on the Today show to discuss the immediate ending of radio shock jock Don Imus's MSNBC simulcast. Per TVNewser, Capus said:
There's no question that his program has had provocative conversation and interesting conversation, deep conversation with thought leaders and political leaders through the years. But it's also had the other element. At some point you have to say 'enough is enough.' This went so far over the line that it was time.Capus also mentioned the most vocal critics he heard from were from NBC itself and said "why have an integrity policy unless you're going to enforce it?" The NBC News chief has denied that the reason for the firing was because advertisers were fleeing, which we sort of buy - given that the show made $50 million in revenue, you could probably find some less prestigious advertisers to fill the ad time. FishbowlDC has been liveblogging Imus's radio show this morning, and Imus talks about hyprocrisy, MSNBC being unethical, and a lack of support from Harold Ford Jr.
The seeds have been planted and it is clear that if Alex Rodriguez leaves after this season it is because the fans in New York didn’t like him enough. Yesterday, he appeared on Mike and the Mad Dog and told them:
"Either New York is going to kick me out of New York this year, say 'I've had enough of this guy, get him the hell out of here,' and we have an option. Or New York is going to say, 'Hey, we won a world championship, you had a big year, you were a part of it and we want you back.'"$252-million and all the talent in the world cannot overcome massive insecurities and that is the conundrum of Alex Rodriguez. When he was with Seattle he couldn’t stand the fact that Derek Jeter was considered his equal because his teams had won so he trashed him in Esquire.
The Yankees have had a glorious history, but it has not been one free of tragedy. From Gehrig and Hunter to Mantle and Munson, disease and accident have taken many of the teams’ legends before their time. Cory Lidle was only a member of the team for two months, but his sudden and tragic death Wednesday fit into an all-too familiar history.
A helicopter has crashed into a building on East 72nd. It was thought to be a small plane, but now reports say it is a helicopter. The helicopter seems to have crashed into 524 East 72nd Street, a residential apartment building. CNN is saying there are no reports of terrorism or hijacking.
- Tonight at Shea Stadium (assuming these apocalyptic thunderstorms stop), Good Morning America Weekend Edition anchor Kate Snow will be selling cotton candy to the masses as the Mets face the Astros. Her stint as a vendor is part of GMA's Summer Dream Jobs segment (or something like that) where anchors do various jobs unrelated to reading stuff off a teleprompter. Could they not give her a slightly harder job? When you sell cotton candy, you barely have to walk anywhere, all the kids go right up to you.
Met fans had to be disappointed with their team's 5-3 loss to the Phillies Thursday afternoon, but they likely got a kick of out WFAN personalities Chris Russo and Mike Francesa in their role as commenators. The hosts of Mike and the Mad Dog won't make Gothamist forget Bob Murphy, but they didn't disgrace themselves either. Russo did seven innings of play by play, and he brought his usual energy and trademark cackling laugh to the booth. He developed some catchphrases (each inning ended with "and that's that") and pointed out the absurdity of the contest which awarded a listener if the Mets turned a triple play in a particular inning. Francesa's play by play did not match Russo's, but they worked well together and gave basic and tolerable color commentary.
Professional golf is coming to Manhattan. Of course, it's on Governor's Island, only 9 holes, and it's a pro-am tournament which will feature professional women and Hollywood actors. The tournament, dubbed The Manhattan Golf Classic and scheduled for October 22nd, will be on the only golf course in all of Manhattan. Scenes from the tournament will surely be beautiful. With the historic buildings on the island, the Brooklyn and the Manhattan skyline as backdrops, the statue of liberty, and the sun setting? It seems like a producer's dream. The pros signed up to appear are Annika Sorenstam, Natalie Gulbis, and Hank Haney while the celebrities are Bruce McGill, Dennis Quaid, and Craig T. Nelson (Coach!!). The course is being leased for a mere $75,000 from the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation, but Newsday reports that the organizers already have $2 million in advertising lined up.
While Gothamist understands that Sheffield wants to be a Yankee, we also wonder if he's thought about the team. Gary, we're not sure if you've looked recently, but your team is old and you don't have a no-trade clause in your contract. Concessions or not, your team needs to get younger and this year, unlike years past, the Yankees might be the team to dump players and not add them. Did you think that they might need to trade you to get better? No, of course not, because it was your first choice to come here. Then again, we wouldn't want to play in Shea Stadium either.
Although Vinny Testaverde will not be present, Gothamist can't help but think of the last time these two teams met in East Rutherford on a Monday night.
WFAN was first to report the departure of Marv Albert, they also reported that as soon as the negotiations had started to breakdown with Marv and the Garden. Marv called the YES network to position himself for the Nets play-by-play broadcasting job. The position is currently held by Ian Eagle, who has been doing play by play for the Nets for the past 6 years.
