As we know, black-eyed peas are lucky when eaten on the first day of the year, but one man who couldn't find any was Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. The team's owner was at Melba's in Harlem on Sunday, according to the NY Post, but the comfort food restaurant didn't have what he was looking for. The paper reports back that while he got collard greens (representing luck in money), "staff at the West 114th Street eatery omitted the luck portion of the meal. Owner Melba Wilson said, 'I feel a little guilty. I only had mixed rice and peas. On his way out, he gave me a hug and said he wished we had the black-eyed peas because he needed luck." more ›

Count Dr. Lisa Li is one of the lucky ones. On Sunday, she was driving to work at St. Clare Hospital in Boonton, New Jersey, when Kinnelon Road collapsed and engulfed her GMC Yukon. Everybody is getting suspiciously lucky lately: after yesterday's report that a college kid from Florida won a furnished condo in the Financial District thanks to a HGTV pop-up contest, today brings news that a Manhattan man won $1.8 million in the Powerball lottery last week after buying nine tickets with the same numbers at an UWS bodega. Miguel Rivera, 53, of the UES, won nine second-place prizes of $200,000. He was but one Powerball number away from hitting the full $95.3 million grand prize.
