Once upon a time in 1999, a book of short stories titled, The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing, came out and captured the hearts of female readers, many of them single, New York women looking for love and career fulfillment (much like the main character in most of the stories, Jane), as the Bridget Jones/Sex and the City zeitgeist started to take hold. And Gothamist thought, "This should be a movie!" And a year or so later, we heard that Reese Witherspoon had optioned the book. Then nothing. Last year, Marc Klein, who wrote Serendipity, was charged to adapt two of the stories and later direct it. And this year, Sarah Michelle Gellar was announced as the lead. Finally, yesterday, the Hollywood Reporter announced that Alec Baldwin was cast at the older man that Jane falls for. Which threw us for a loop, because we usually think about his as Frank The Cucumber or as whoever he is playing on Will & Grace these days (we don't really know, as we only see the previews and think, "Hell, that show is like the comedy Love Boat with all those guest stars"); Archie always seemed to be more Waspy and destructive. But maybe Alec Baldwin is right for the role, as he was brilliant as a Wasp in the classic Saturday Night Live sketch, Greenhilly. Clearly, we'll need to reread the book this weekend. more ›

Just what the world was waiting for! The NY Times reports that Arianna Huffington is starting a celebrity group blog with people like "Walter Cronkite, David Mamet, Nora Ephron, Warren Beatty, James Fallows, Vernon E. Jordan Jr., Maggie Gyllenhaal, Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., Diane Keaton, Norman Mailer and Mortimer B. Zuckerman." Huh. Did Huffington read the Businessweek article about blogs changing business and decide, "It's on"? It'll be called Huffington Post, the NY Times article positions it as a competitor to The Drudge Report, but it seems less that than a celebrity vanity project like, oh, we don't know...maybe like an episode of The Love Boat with more street cred and an ability for readers to comments. Huffington says it's "an affirmation of [blogs'/the blogosphere's] success and will only enrich and strengthen its impact on the national conversation," but Sure, it'll be cool to read what Walter Cronkite thinks, but we fear he'll get bogged down with despamming the system. And don't get us started on wondering if certain celebrities are actually posting or making a minion post for them. more ›

The big movie opening this weekend is the movie version of Starsky and Hutch starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, and Gothamist has to say, if you love Ben and Owen's chemistry (think Meet the Parents... Zoolander...), go see it (or just go because Snoop Dogg steals the film). E! Online has a great question and answer with the pair in their feature, "Guffaw and Order"; E! asked Wilson about singing the David Soul hit, "Don't Give Up On Us, Baby" (lyrics; here's a short sound file of the song):

You know, that was a choice I made, going for that soulless sound. I have to admit, when we were filming that scene and I had to sing for Carmen [Electra] and Amy [Smart], it was awkward--just seeing their expressions. You know when somebody shows you their baby, and you think the baby is not very cute but you try to smile anyway? That's how they looked. I could just see their interest in me flicker out--if it was ever there to begin with.

Also, Gothamist wants to note that Carmen Electra is a better actress than Amy Smart: When they are called to make out, Carmen really gets into it.
