It's all about Brokeback these days: This morning, Kate Beckinsale, Mark Wahlberg, and Steve Carrell announced the 63rd Annual Golden Globe nominations, and Brokeback Mountain walked away with 7 nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), Director, Actor, Supporting Actress (Michelle Williams). Match Point, the unreleased Woody Allen movie, also got nods in Picture and Director, plus Supporting Actress Scarlett Johnanssen. As for the TV nominations, the ladies of Wisteria Lane took four leading actress nominations, giving Weeds' Mary Louise Parker a good shot of winning, though Felicity Huffman and Marcia Cross were fierce this year. We do want to say this, though: Kristen Bell, you were robbed!

But this week's issue has a story about missing Pabst Blue Ribbon in Brooklyn - something for the very struggling masses - as well as a story making a deal with a grandma to have her help out with the deposit on a Brooklyn brownstone - who wouldn't agree to have a baby quickly and live with your grandmother for a hunk of Park Slope real estae? And then there is New York's "Cultural Elite" section, where they name their favorite New Yorkers and various entertainment offerings in TV, music, movies, etc. - which is amusing to see, if only to learn that TV critic John Leonard loves Mary Louise Parker a hell of a lot and that Jack White is good theater. So, next week, we expect not to relate so much.

So earlier in the week Gothamist got our hands on the first five episodes of Showtime's new show "Weeds" (which has a sneak-peak tonight at 11) and our first reaction was... pretty good. While the show has lots of problems and an often uneven tone, its heart is in the right place and after the pilot it quickly starts to pull itself together.

In the television category, kudos to our favorite cops and lawyers for getting an ensemble acting nomination. Also, Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order SVU was nominated for lead actress in a drama. And while snubbed for a Golden Globe, our friend Justin Kirk was nominated for best actor in a TV movie for his amazing work in Angels America; Al Pacino, Jeffrey Wright, Meryl Streep, Mary-Louise Parker, and Emma Thompson were also nominated for their roles in Angels. To bring it full circle, Ben Shenkman, who also starred in Angels, played the defendant's lawyer on Law & Order last night.
