Cat-Hoarding Williamsburg Couple Arrested For Animal Abuse

Cat-Hoarding Williamsburg Couple Arrested For Animal Abuse

A Brooklyn couple was charged with animal hoarding after near 100 cats—many flea-bitten and dehydrated— were found in their home last summer. The Daily News reports that Michael and Hazel Fiore "face a 252-count indictment for keeping the tortured tabbies in a rented Williamsburg loft that reeked of decomposing cat carcases, feces and urine. The extent of the horror came to light in July, when five kittens, two of them blind, fell through urine-soaked rotting floorboards from the third-floor space to the loft below." more ›

The Art Scene Moves To … Newark?

The Art Scene Moves To … Newark?

Artists aren't moving across the East River — they're moving across the Hudson River, according to the Daily News. The tabloid reports that Newark, New Jersey boasts an emerging artistic community with a growing number of galleries and art institutions. “I thought downtown Newark resembled downtown L.A. before it was what it is now,” said gallery owner Saloman Anaya, 34. “We used to have derelicts and craziness on the streets, but that all changed.” more ›

Christie's Classes Up Red Hook Waterfront

Christie's Classes Up Red Hook Waterfront

Red Hook is getting another big name, but this time it's not a Big Box store. The NY Times reports that the once corrupt waterfront location is getting classed up by Christie's Auction House! They'll be moving into "an enormous, high-tech warehouse with security worthy of James Bond, all to protect the multimillion-dollar artworks, manuscripts, furniture and even rare cars." The luxury storage facility will be housed in one of the former New York Dock Company loft buildings, which is being renovated, and by January "will boast infrared video cameras, biometric readers and motion-activated monitors, as well as smoke-, heat- and water-detection systems," as well as private viewing galleries. This sounds primed for an art caper, Hudson Hawk style. The lofts were originally going to be luxury apartments, but the developer has said, “I still think it will be a fantastic residential conversion, but with the economic climate being what it is today. it may make sense to do a Christie’s-like commercial deal and treat it as a bond—you, know, put it away for 30 years, let my children see what’s happening 30 years from now.” more ›

The Real World Cast Dissected

The Real World Cast Dissected

Sure, photos of the Real World cast have seeped onto the internet, but now one blogger has gotten up close and personal with them, seeing what the walking MTV clichés are really all about. She reports back (with video!), attending a loft party this weekend in the neighborhood: "from what I could tell, there was a normal, apple-pie girl (the one going out with the guy who lived in the party loft) who had a weird different name like Been or Bien or Bash or something; there was a queen-y, tall, black guy who was making a dramatic Blackberry phone call outside, presumably to one of the other roommates; an alterna-girl with styled, black hair who seemed to be short on patience and long on attitude; and there were a few diminutive, run-of-the-mill fratties with Gotti-boy hair." Also, one of them did Jäger bombs before he got there. Really, MTV? It's like you aren't even trying anymore. more ›
