Coney Island Locals Want New Life For Shore Theater

    

Coney Island locals have been rallying to revive the shuttered Shore Theater (formerly the Loew’s Coney Island), which five years ago was nominated for landmark designation. Yesterday the group—led by Dick Zigun—made a plea to building owner Horace Bullard at the Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing. There's been much discussion about reviving old theaters in town lately, with the Ridgewood Theater getting landmark status and the Loew's in Chinatown getting refurbished into a community center. Now Brooklyn's Loew's Kings Theater is getting some attention after rotting away since 1977—the NY Times notes that its current state includes a "rusting, dirt-caked marquee," a cobweb-filled deteriorated interior, and plenty of vandal and pigeon feces. Canal Street Loews To Become Cultural Center

Can the rundown Loew's Theater at 31 Canal Street make a comeback? Originally opened in 1927, it was run by Loew's until the 1960s. It then became an indie-run theater until 1980. Now, the NY Post reports, it may have another lease on life, as an Asian-American arts group (CREATE: the Committee to Revitalize and Enrich the Arts and Tomorrow's Economy) hopes to revive it. more ›
