Liz Phair, Musician

Last night we had a chance to see Liz Phair play an intimate show at Maxwell's in Hoboken, a kick-off to her tour (which brings her to Bowery Ballroom tonight). Before she went on, we went down to the basement of the venue and sat in a makeshift greenroom with her and Alex Tween of The Forms, who was there to interview the '90s icon for us. The two share someone in common—Craig Wedren—who Phair has worked with, and who recently sang on The Forms's new EP, Derealization (out February 15th). Phair talked about her new album Funstyle, her most celebrated album, Exile in Guyville, and of course the good ol' prostitutes of the East Village. more ›

Gothamist Week in Rock: Early Nineties Edition

Gothamist Week in Rock: Early Nineties Edition

You've gotta hand it to the Pearl Jam fans. They are REAL, and likely one of the most hardcore and dedicated fan bases in America. To many, Pearl Jam is merely the "other" Grunge band, but they're one of the most successful and influential bands of the last two decades. And despite their mopey reputation, Vedder and crew really seem quite content these days. They were really into it on stage at MSG earlier this week, feeding off the mutual satisfaction and intensity of the crowd. They're older, and they've traded in their flannel for more conservative dress, but the songs have held up remarkably well. They keep up with an energy that most bands at this stage in their career have lost, and put on (aside from maybe Bruce Springsteen) the best no-frills arena rock show in the business. They may not have released a classic record in nearly a decade, but they're still at it on the road, playing varied sets from their deep back catalogue, and are showing no signs of slowing down. more ›

Movies with Exclamation Points!!!

Movies with Exclamation Points!!!

Even though Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! (see the trailer) looks silly, it has Kate Bosworth and Topher Grace, for that alone Gothamist will be first in line. A Connecticut native, Grace, as most know, is not only funny on That 70s Show but on talk shows, especially the Daily Show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien, where he discussed debating whether or not to bring a date to a wedding (his friend told him, "Why bring sand to the beach?" We wonder if that was Kutcher or Valderrama or Masterson). Bosworth, on the other hand, won our heart after Blue Crush, maybe only second to Bring it On in terms of recent sports movie greatness. At any rate, Gothamist appreciates the idea that one could one a date with a movie star with an online contest, and that Piggly-Wigglies have computers in their employee lounges, as well as the exclamation point to make it clear that this is a giddy concept. Whee!! more ›

Meeting New Yorkers is Not Easy

Meeting New Yorkers is Not Easy

Even though Suffolk County has denied their permit, promoters claim the Field Day Festival, the two-day concert with acts like the Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Beck, and Liz Phair, will still go on. Schedule for June 7-8, the concert is to be held at a former Grumman U.S. naval facility in Calverton, NY. The accusations/excuses the town of Riverhead faces are that roads wouldn't be able to handle the traffic, the land would be irrevocably damaged, etc. more ›
