There's a super feature on Coney Island's news signs in the NY Times today. Artist Steve Powers offered to paint new signs for various Coney Island businesses for free, and then last year, he and Creative Time formed The Dreamland Artist Club, which connect artists with business owners for Coney Island signage betterment. Times reporter Randy Kennedy finds business owners to be generally happy with the project:

One veteran arcade owner, who spoke only on the condition that his name not be used, said that he was suspicious of the project at first, but had watched as the signs had brought customers back to Jones Walk.

The catches on to Ask Gothamist's slight obsession with subway etiquette. (*cough* We think out complaints are totally legit, though!)

The image we were struck by is Ting-Li Wang's picture of Karlis Revics (left) destroying his sculpture to get it out, which made us think of a quote in the gravestones-in-the-field story - "It feels eerie. Like desecrating something." These are two very different areas of NYC, one will be a haven for sophisticated and urbanites while the College Point development is slated for three-family homes, but it's still development and trying to find room for people to live.

These dudes look like they're in a rock band or just went to check one out downtown. But actually they are the chefs at WD-50, headed by Wylie Dufresne, formerly of 71 Clinton Fresh Food and who helped spark the Lower East Side restaurant boom. The Times gives foodies a glimpse into the new operation. Don't know if Wylie Dufresne is trying to be all ironic, but WD-50 is a lot like WD-40. Not to worry 71 Clinton fans - the new chef is doing just fine.
