Green, The Color Of Envy, Eyed For City's New Livery Cabs
Someday in the not to distant future, you will be able to legally hail livery cabs in upper Manhattan and the outer boroughs (as opposed to now when you can still do so, just illegally). But when that great day comes it will bring with it a number of other changes. One of the biggest? The TLC rules are insisting that all hailable livery cabs be the same color. And Transportation Nation has it on good authority that that color will be green.
Cars Keeps Crashing Into His House, But Bronx Man Will Not Move
You know how a livery cab crashed into a Bronx home's garage on Monday morning? Well, according to the homeowner, Steve Campbell, this is the second time it's happened (the previous time, the car went THROUGH THE HOUSE into an adjoining apartment). However, he told the NY Times, "Why should I move? You could go anywhere and get hit by a car."
Dispute Between Livery Cab Drivers Spurred Shopping Cart Attack
Two men remain hospitalized after being injured by a shopping cart that was apparently thrown at them from the third floor of a Bronx parking garage. Lounceny Camara, 52, and his friend, Sagne Ibrahima, 30, who had been standing at the Bronx Gateway Center shopping center during the Monday incident, are both in stable condition. The police are continuing to investigate the attack and some think that a fight over a livery cab fare sparked the attack.
Federal Judge: NYC's Taxis Totally Discriminate Against Disabled Riders
Just days after Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Cuomo worked out their differences and agreed on a plan to allow livery cabs to take street-hails in the outer-boroughs, a federal judge has hit the brakes. U.S. District Court Judge George Daniels said that the current fleet of taxis do discriminate against people with disabilities and the city may only issue new medallions or "street-hail" permits to wheelchair-accessible taxi cabs and livery cabs.
Cab Chaos: Third Livery Driver Attacked With Gun This Month

Ndiaje survived but is fighting for his life, according to the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers.

Cop Puts Finger In Suspect's Gun To Stop Him From Firing
A police officer nearly got shot by a man wielding a .38 gun but managed to stop him by jamming his finger to prevent him from firing. The NYPD says that Sgt. Michael Miller and Officer William Reddin checked out a livery cab that had been speeding on Quincy Street in Brooklyn yesterday around 4 a.m. The Post reports, "When the cops walked up and displayed shields, they noticed a passenger, Eugene Graves, acting suspiciously. Miller, a 13-year veteran of the NYPD, reached toward a bulge at Graves’ waist and felt a gun beneath his clothes."
Stabby Livery Cab Robbers On The Loose In The Bronx
A pair of stab-happy livery cab robbers are on the loose in the Bronx, and police are asking the public for help finding the suspects after a string of attacks. In the first incident, which took place on September 18, one of the suspects hailed a livery cab near Boston Road and Allerton Avenue at around 11 p.m. and asked to go to East 223rd Street. Upon arrival, the suspect choked the driver by wrapping something around his neck, held an unknown object to his side and demanded cash.
Bloomberg's Taxi Plan Gets Green Light
Gay marriage passing wasn't the only big news out of Albany last night. The State Senate also approved the "Big Ugly" omnibus bill and handed Mayor Bloomberg a major victory over the taxi lobby. Though Governor Cuomo could still hold it up, it looks like come next summer New York will have a whole new class of hailable taxi cabs roaming our streets.
Midtown Delivery: Brooklyn Woman Gives Birth In Livery Cab
A Brooklyn woman got the livery cab ride of her life on Wednesday when her baby decided not to wait for the hospital and instead appeared at 51st Street and Seventh Avenue. Even Sweeney called a cab from Arecibo at 6 p.m., and when she got in, "I was far enough in labor that I was like 'Please lock the doors,' because I knew I was going to be stomping on them." The next thing she, her partner Inez Murray and cabbie Juan Hernandez knew, her water broke. Hernandez said, "She started screaming. I told her, 'If it has to happen here, just push!'"
Murder Suspect's Stabbing Victim Handcuffed Over Old Warrant
In the midst of his stabbing spree across the city, Maksim Gelman forced his way into a livery cab and allegedly stabbed the driver in an attempt to gain control of the car. Driver Fitz Fullerton was taken to the hospital early Saturday to be treated for gashes to his face and hands, where police arrived to question him about the stabbings. However, he also claims they questioned him about his personal history, and soon had him in cuffs for an "unpaid ticket" from 2001. Of course, that's not quite how police see it.
Panel Rubs Out Appeal Motion From Jerk-Off Cabbie
Livery cab driver Angel Bautista lost his license in 2009 after a female passenger riding shotgun complained to the TLC that he was driving while masturbating. The unidentified passenger (who was riding up front because her friends were in the back) says Bautista had a coat over his lap and a few tissues at the ready. After noticing his hand "jerking" under the coat, she called him out, saying, "You're not doing what I think you're doing." "Oh come on, I wouldn't do that!" Bautista ejaculated. "I can't be doing that. How can I do that and I'm driving a car?" In our line of work, that's called multitasking.
[UPDATE] Two Hit And Runs Leave One Dead, One Unconscious
[UPDATE BELOW] Yesterday, two hit and runs in the city left one disabled grandmother dead and one Brooklyn girl in the ICU with a punctured lung. Around 4 a.m., 58-year-old Ilia Lopez was struck by a livery cab on E. 121st St. at Second Avenue. The driver reportedly sped off with Lopez still on the hood of the car; she didn't fall off until he hit E. 120th Street and First avenue. She was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, but the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers wants to make sure nobody gets a bad view of livery drivers because of this.
Suspected Trevor Bell Shooter Tracked Through Cell Phone
Shawn Peace, the 22-year-old wanted for shooting livery cab driver Trevor Bell, has been arrested in Buffalo. Police easily identified the shooter from surveillance footage taken inside Bell's cab during the shooting, and were able to find him by tracking his cell phone usage. One source told the Daily News Peace may be responsible for over a dozen restaurant and livery cab robberies, mostly in Queens. The News also reports it's unclear why Peace was in Buffalo, but it's pretty obvious that not even the most hardened criminal can resist the siren call of the "City of Good Neighbors." Especially not in January!
Getting Shot Not Enough To Get Workers Comp Assistance
Livery cab driver Trevor Bell has been in the hospital for over a month now after being shot in the neck and left for dead by a passenger on December 3rd. The suspected shooter, 22-year-old Shawn Peace, was caught on video fighting with Bell, and stole about $100 as he fled. But now Bell may be facing the loss of his livelihood; New York State Workers’ Compensation Board reportedly did not approve his claim for assistance with car loan payments, saying "the claimed injuries do not meet the qualifying criteria."
Cab Driver Shot After Passengers Get Into Argument
Another livery cab driver has been shot after a male and a female passenger began arguing in the backseat. According to the Post, the two passengers entered the cab in Midwood early Christmas morning, and soon began to fight. The cab driver pulled over after the male passenger, suspect Shiekh Hoque, pulled a 9mm gun, and somehow the gun discharged. It's unclear whether the passenger meant to shoot the driver or whether it went off by accident, but the bullet went through the back of the seat and hit the driver in the back. We guess he wasn't one of the 12 livery drivers equipped with a bulletproof vest.
Cabbies: How About Bulletproof Vests Instead Of Profiling?
After the fatal shooting of livery cab driver Trevor Bell earlier this month, New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers head Fernando Mateo urged drivers to racially profile their passengers. Now the union is introducing another tactic to protect drivers: bulletproof vests. Security USA donated 12 vests as part of a pilot program for drivers working after dark in dangerous neighborhoods, and the union is asking retired NYPD officers to donate their old vests.

The passenger had walked into Big D Car service asking for a ride to 122nd Street and Sutter Avenue, but when Bell dropped him off at the dead end and asked for the fare, the passenger pulled out his gun and shot Bell, leaving him with bullet wounds in his neck, his arm and both his legs. He then stole just under $100 from the running car and fled the scene.

Hot 97 Manager: Cops Stopped Me For Cab Riding While Black
It's so hard for black people to get a cab in this town that when they finally flag one, cops think they're robbing it. At least, that's one conclusion you could draw from Hot 97 / Kiss FM manager Terrence Battle, who was riding home to Bed-Stuy in a livery cab around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning when the NYPD pulled the car over. He says cops humiliated him outside his home for no other reason than because he's black, and claims they justified the search by pointing to a sticker on the car allowing police to stop the vehicle at any time to check on the driver's safety. Here's Battle's story, in his own words:
Livery Cab Hits Four Pedestrians In Park Slope
Yesterday morning, around 11 a.m., there were reports of a motor vehicle accident involving an entrapment on 8th Avenue at 11th Street in Park Slope. It turns out an out-of-control livery cab jumped a curb and hit a total of four pedestrians. F***ed in Park Slope wearily asks, "DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DRIVE IN THIS GD NEIGHBORHOOD?"

Cameron had been walking to the bus stop to head to work.
Apology From Cab Driver In Fatal Bus Shelter Crash
The livery cab driver who crashed into a Bronx bus shelter last week, killing one man and injuring six others (including a woman whose foot was amputated), has issued an apology. Pedro Marte apparently swerved into the shelter because he was trying to avoid a minivan making an illegal U-turn on the street. The NY State Federation of Taxi Drivers' Fernando Mateo said, "He wants the families to know that it wasn’t his fault. He did everything he could to avoid this terrible tragedy. But he totally lost control and it was out of his hands.” The minivan driver was given a summons.
Family Of Man Killed In Bus Shelter Crash Wants Justice
Days after the 76-year-old was fatally struck by a livery cab that crashed into a bus shelter in the Bronx, Marcelino Adraneda's family is preparing for his funeral. Adraneda was pinned by the cab and his leg was apparently severed; his granddaughter told the Daily News, "I don't want to think about the pain he was in. Only the good times and his smile." But one thing the family cannot believe is that the minivan driver whose illegal U-turn allegedly caused the livery cab to swerve into the shelter only got a summons. Adraneda's daughter spoke to the Post, "We would like to see some charges against the driver," and a grandson said the driver didn't even apologize. Six other people were injured, including a woman whose foot was cut off.
Livery Cab Hits Bronx Bus Shelter, 1 Dead, 6 Injured
Just before 11 a.m., a livery cab slammed into a bus shelter at University Ave. and West Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx. WCBS 2 reports that one man in his 70s was killed while six others were injured: "Witnesses tell 1010 WINS reporter Steve Sandberg that a mini-van trying to make an illegal U-turn caused the accident. The livery cab apparently swerved to avoid the van, lost control and then plowed into the bus stop shattering the glass shelter. Witnesses say there were four people at the bus shelter and two others were hurt by a bench that went flying after the crash."

Last night, after 9:30 p.m., a woman was struck and dragged by a livery cab in Midtown East. According to WABC 7, "Eyewitnesses say the car ran a red light and hit the woman as she crossed East 54th Street at Lexington Avenue Thursday night. The victim was pinned under the car. People had to bang on the driver's window to let him know he hit someone. Several men then lifted the car to free the woman." She was taken to New York Presbyterian and is in critical condition. It's unclear if the driver was charged.
Livery Cabs Getting Free Wi-Fi
We know they're sketchy, but by the end of the year there may be a reason to hail a gypsy cab instead of a yellow one. Alex Mashinsky, who is also helping to bring internet to the subways, wants to equip at least 1,000 LimoRes Car & Limo, UTOG Corporate Car Service Inc. and Velocity Limo Inc. cars with Wi-Fi by fall. Once those are up and running, he wants to blanket the city with "tens of thousands of vehicles." The service would provide free internet access to anyone in or running down the street within a 400 foot radius of the cars.
