New List Confirms People Still Like Coming To NYC For New Year's Eve

New List Confirms People Still Like Coming To NYC For New Year's Eve

In Priceline's world, the Lower East Side is the 46th best spot in the United States to celebrate New Year's Eve. In a "news release" the company sent out, spotted by EV Grieve, they say their "top destinations list is based on thousands of hotel booking requests made by customers for the New Year's weekend." The neighborhood comes behind places like Orlando, Minneapolis, and Miami's International Airport Area... but then again, that neighborhood has less hotel rooms to offer. more ›

Woody Guthrie's 33 New Year's Resolutions Included "Take Bath"

Woody Guthrie's 33 New Year's Resolutions Included "Take Bath"

What was Woody Guthrie hoping to change for himself in 1942? This is an unearthed list of his resolutions for that year, which include: Work more and better, take bath, shave, save dough, play and sing good, dance better, love everybody, and wake up and fight. By 1943, he was roaming the streets of New York City with his Facist-Killing Machine and a clean shave, so he definitely accomplished a few of these goals. [via Boing Boing] more ›

What Will You Do The Day Before The Rapture Wipes Us Out?

What Will You Do The Day Before The Rapture Wipes Us Out?

According to debunked doomsday prognosticator Harold Camping, tomorrow is the Rapture...again. Camping knows you doubt him, since no heathens burst into flames in 1994 or on May 21, which was his last prediction for Judgment Day 2011: Turn Off The Dark. But Camping assures that it'll happen this time—albeit "very very quietly," perhaps SO quietly you don't even notice anything happened at all. But instead of viewing all this cynically, maybe there's a half-glass-full way to appreciate our impending doom; after all, how many times in one life can you say for sure you know you only have one day to live? more ›

The Time 100 List Reminds Us Who To Care About

The Time 100 List Reminds Us Who To Care About

It's finally here: the 2011 Tiger Beat Time 100 list of most influential movers and shakers around the world will be published on Friday. But knowing that there was no way anyone will wait to read it in the actual magazine, they were kind enough to put the list online for us to gawk at today. And it includes several notable NYers, including Patti Smith, Jonathan Franzen, Jennifer Egan, Ground Zero Mosque Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and Harlem Children's Zone founder Geoffrey Canada. There are also two prominent NJ politicians—Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Gov. Chris Christie—but no NY ones. Should we be demanding a recount? more ›

What Do Tourists Learn From NYC-Based TV Shows?

What Do Tourists Learn From NYC-Based TV Shows?

An out-of-towner who has never stepped foot in New York City has compiled a list of what she's learned about the Big Apple from television, saying, "I've watched enough television set in New York to have learned some of what to expect when I finally make it there." Oddly, she doesn't mention all of the oversized 2-bedroom rent-controlled apartments available in Manhattan... but click through for a glimpse at what television has taught her. And then send us your own list of what television has taught you about the country beyond our city's borders—we'll pick the top answers and post them here tomorrow. Stay tuned... NYC: Not That Drunk, After All

NYC: Not That Drunk, After All

Oh sure, label us binge drinkers, but don't put us in the fun top 40 drunkest cities list? Something stinks, and it's not this Four Loko. Anyway, the Daily Beast ranked cities on how drunk they get, saying, "New Year’s Eve revelry serves as a reminder that the rules of moderation sometimes go out the window. The question we have: Which places throw out those rules too often?" The #1 city is Milwaukee, WI—where the average person 12.76 alcoholic beverages a month. A month! Oh c'mon, we know people (not us) who drink that much in one night. Maybe New York was taken out of the running because we're too good at drinking too much? more ›

Forbes: First Lady and Lady Gaga Both Powerful Women

Forbes: First Lady and Lady Gaga Both Powerful Women

A new system in place to rank the World's Most Powerful Women has landed Lady Gaga alongside the likes of the First Lady. Stefani Germanotta—who wasn't even on the Forbes list last year—has secured a spot in the top 10 (of 100), coming in at #7. That ranking put her thisclose to Michelle Obama (#1), Oprah (#3), and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (#5). more ›

De Blasio Hopes New Slumlord Watchlist Shames Landlords

De Blasio Hopes New Slumlord Watchlist Shames Landlords

Yesterday, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio launched a new online slumlord watchlist, in an attempt to hold landlords accountable in a way they never have been before. "When you or I get a parking ticket, we have to pay. When a landlord gets a violation for a health and safety problem, they ignore it in many cases and then they ignore it and then they ignore it again," he told the Daily News. more ›

What Annoys New Yorkers The Most?

There are a lot of things that annoy New Yorkers, though maybe nothing more than seeing such a complex group of people being reduced to a pie chart. Nevertheless, the Post compiled this chart of things that piss off New Yorkers. So, are they right? more ›

Eight Other Cities Are More Caffeinated Than NYC

Eight Other Cities Are More Caffeinated Than NYC

As we learned late last year, coffee can make a person less suicidal, so perhaps it's not surprising that the rainy Pacific Northwest drinks so much of it. Seattle and Portland rank #1 and #2, respectively, on a list of the most caffeinated cities recently put together by the Daily Beast. The site compared stats from urban centers across the country to create their list, and considered three things: "the availability of coffee, the average monthly outlay for coffee and total caffeine consumption from all sources, including tea, sweets, energy drinks and pills." more ›

Is This List of What New Yorkers Like Realistic?

Is This List of What New Yorkers Like Realistic?

Trying to make sweeping generalizations about the personalities of New Yorkers is never a good idea, but the Daily News thinks it's narrowed down "50 Things That Make New Yorkers Smile." Some of the schadenfreude is spot on ("Seeing the tourists actually stand and wait at the corner till the Walk signal lights up") while other points seem really neighborhood specific ("Going to the Gee Whiz Diner for waffles at 4 a.m."). And is getting a t-shirt from Ollie's Noodle Shop a thing? Because that just seems one step away from "Wearing the 'Hard Rock Cafe' shirt I bought on my high school field trip." more ›

Jon Bon Jovi Fuming Over Being Left Off Forbes Lists

Jon Bon Jovi Fuming Over Being Left Off Forbes Lists

Jersey's own Jon Bon Jovi is (allegedly!) creating a stink over being left off the 2010 Forbes magazine top celebrity lists. Not only was his name missing from their Power 100 roster, but he was also left off the Musicians' Rich List—which even Britney Spears made it on to! Instead of gracefully ignoring his absence, however, the musician allegedly "kicked up a huge fuss and got his people to complain," according to a Page Six source. Forbes confirmed they received complaints from the musician's people, but those people say, "That's ridiculous. Last year, the band took an eight-month break from touring, so there was no expectation that they would rank on this year's list." Aw, you'll get 'em next year Jon Bon. more ›

Get Yours: Fun To-Do List For New Yorkers

This morning Jake Bronstein distributed the first batch of his Fun List NYC books to unsuspecting New Yorkers. The bounded books are free, and actually act as check-lists for fun things to do around the city—it includes everything from going to sex clubs ("a great place to meet other perverts") to hipster bingo to cutting out a paper replica of Donald Trump's famous hair for photo shoots with strangers. A street team will be back out on the L, N and R trains tomorrow morning handing out the rest of their lot—but if you don't see them, you can download your own here. more ›

What Not To Do In NYC

What Not To Do In NYC

Travel site Concierge.com is begging tourists not to do certain things when visiting NYC. They preface their list by saying it's "a touchy subject that's bound to inspire some strong reactions. For your enjoyment, outrage, and debate, therefore, here are ten of New York's most played-out, overrated, nonessential nonattractions—and what to do instead." more ›

Who Are The Worst Muppets?

Who Are The Worst Muppets?

Can any Muppet really be that bad? This website has come up with a list of what they say are the 10 worst Muppets ever, or as they put it: "Even the best shows on television have bad characters... here is the real list of Muppets who suck." Pepe the Prawn comes in at #1 — but isn't it at least endearing that there's a prawn-inspired Muppet? Also on the list: Kermit's nephew Robin, Mr. Poodlepants, Clifford, and... Dr. Bunsen Honeydew! For shame, list makers. Who are your least favorite Muppets? more ›

Worst Bridges Ever

The General Contractors Association already pointed out that our bridges are the worst, earlier this year, and now AAA is rubbing it in with their own list. They say the Tappan Zee, Kosciuszko and Goethals bridges are the worst in the state; with subpar steel, limited sight lines and small lanes amongst the list of hazards. The Post points out that all three bridges are up for reconstruction in the next decade... so we got that going for us. more ›

Where Are Our Ugly Buildings?

Where Are Our Ugly Buildings?

Travel + Leisure takes a look at the World's Ugliest Buildings, and somehow no New York structures made the list. Not even the Verizon Building. Though the New York magazine architecture critic may have an explanation; he tells them: “The ugliest buildings are the anonymous ones. Even if an experimental, high-profile building doesn’t quite deliver, at least the architect is trying something. A boring building is a warehouse in the middle of New Jersey.” more ›

Our Bridges Are the Worst

Our Bridges Are the Worst

While our city's bridges may be fantastic for falcons, they're unfortunately not so great when it comes to us humans. A new list, provided by the General Contractors Association, points out the worst bridges and elevated roadways right here in New York City. Drum roll please! more ›

Top 400 New Yorkers of All Time Announced

Top 400 New Yorkers of All Time Announced

Who has helped define this city's history for the past 400 years? The Museum of the City of New York (who we really wish would shorten their name) has compiled a list in commemoration of Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage into the Harbor. "The NYC400 is the first-ever list of New York City's ultimate movers and shakers since the City's founding—from politics, the arts, business, sports, science, and entertainment." more ›

Are These Really the Top Live Music Venues in NYC?

Are These Really the Top Live Music Venues in NYC?

When you want to know which venues to catch live music at in NYC, you wouldn't think to check the UK's Guardian, and there's probably a reason for that. However, they've just released their top 10 list of "where to catch the hottest new bands" in New York (written by a 5-year resident of Brooklyn)—sorry Manhattanites, the venues are all in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. The writer's top picks (and the fact that outside of these two Brooklyn neighborhood's the author suggests Bleecker Street's Bitter End as a go-to should be very telling) include Enid's (which hasn't had live music in quite some time), Trash Bar (which besides suffering from a case of bad booking, doesn't exactly boast the most convivial atmosphere), Sound Fix Lounge (which may not even host live music anymore), and Rock Star Bar (which they describe as dirty and desolate—agreed!). Some notable omissions: Music Hall of Williamsburg, Zebulon and Monkeytown. Any other Williamsburg/Greenpoint gems missing from the list? more ›

NYC is Not So Manly

NYC is Not So Manly

Put down that silly book and stop ironing that tight-fit v-neck for a moment, lads, and know this: you're now a part of the least manliest city in the nation, according to some list. The #1 spot on the "America's Manliest Cities" index went to Nashville (home to an unhealthy number of NASCAR enthusiasts), with NYC falling right at the very bottom. They report, "Despite high ratings in the bowling category, New York City ranks 50th out of 50 in the study due to low scores in manly indicators such as fishing, home improvement and drag racing." Cities that got higher rankings did so through high purchases of salty snacks, number of hardware stores, monster truck rallies and, of course, sports bars. Fun trick: if you flip the list upside down you'll get the America's Most Educated Cities list, and hey, we're #1! [via Village Voice] more ›

Madoff's Victims Listed

Madoff's Victims Listed

The Post heralded the release of the list of Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme victims as "Swindler's List," finding that the investor "targeted prominent Jewish families in New York and Palm Beach. But his swath of tears stretched coast to coast, and also included unions, family trusts and estates." New notable figures among the list: Dodgers legend Sandy Koufax, Madoff's own lawyer Ira Sorkin and World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein, who released a statement saying his losses "absolutely pale in comparison to those innocent investors who lost their life savings as a result of this scheme." You can peruse the 162-page list of victims (PDF); keep in mind that it's by first name...or even "Mr." Also: Harry Markopolos, who questioned Madoff's investing years ago and even brought it to the SEC's (in)attention, told Congress yesterday, “The SEC had enough to get Madoff. I drew them pictures. I gave them a road map. I told them what questions to ask and who to phone.more ›
