Where Are Our Ugly Buildings?

Travel + Leisure takes a look at the World's Ugliest Buildings, and somehow no New York structures made the list. Not even the Verizon Building. Though the New York magazine architecture critic may have an explanation; he tells them: “The ugliest buildings are the anonymous ones. Even if an experimental, high-profile building doesn’t quite deliver, at least the architect is trying something. A boring building is a warehouse in the middle of New Jersey.”

Our Bridges Are the Worst

While our city's bridges may be fantastic for falcons, they're unfortunately not so great when it comes to us humans. A new list, provided by the General Contractors Association, points out the worst bridges and elevated roadways right here in New York City. Drum roll please!

Top 400 New Yorkers of All Time Announced

Who has helped define this city's history for the past 400 years? The Museum of the City of New York (who we really wish would shorten their name) has compiled a list in commemoration of Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage into the Harbor. "The NYC400 is the first-ever list of New York City's ultimate movers and shakers since the City's founding—from politics, the arts, business, sports, science, and entertainment."

Are These Really the Top Live Music Venues in NYC?

When you want to know which venues to catch live music at in NYC, you wouldn't think to check the UK's Guardian, and there's probably a reason for that. However, they've just released their top 10 list of "where to catch the hottest new bands" in New York (written by a 5-year resident of Brooklyn)—sorry Manhattanites, the venues are all in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. The writer's top picks (and the fact that outside of these two Brooklyn neighborhood's the author suggests Bleecker Street's Bitter End as a go-to should be very telling) include Enid's (which hasn't had live music in quite some time), Trash Bar (which besides suffering from a case of bad booking, doesn't exactly boast the most convivial atmosphere), Sound Fix Lounge (which may not even host live music anymore), and Rock Star Bar (which they describe as dirty and desolate—agreed!). Some notable omissions: Music Hall of Williamsburg, Zebulon and Monkeytown. Any other Williamsburg/Greenpoint gems missing from the list?

NYC is Not So Manly

Put down that silly book and stop ironing that tight-fit v-neck for a moment, lads, and know this: you're now a part of the least manliest city in the nation, according to some list. The #1 spot on the "America's Manliest Cities" index went to Nashville (home to an unhealthy number of NASCAR enthusiasts), with NYC falling right at the very bottom. They report, "Despite high ratings in the bowling category, New York City ranks 50th out of 50 in the study due to low scores in manly indicators such as fishing, home improvement and drag racing." Cities that got higher rankings did so through high purchases of salty snacks, number of hardware stores, monster truck rallies and, of course, sports bars. Fun trick: if you flip the list upside down you'll get the America's Most Educated Cities list, and hey, we're #1! [via Village Voice]

Madoff's Victims Listed

The Post heralded the release of the list of Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme victims as "Swindler's List," finding that the investor "targeted prominent Jewish families in New York and Palm Beach. But his swath of tears stretched coast to coast, and also included unions, family trusts and estates." New notable figures among the list: Dodgers legend Sandy Koufax, Madoff's own lawyer Ira Sorkin and World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein, who released a statement saying his losses "absolutely pale in comparison to those innocent investors who lost their life savings as a result of this scheme." You can peruse the 162-page list of victims (PDF); keep in mind that it's by first name...or even "Mr." Also: Harry Markopolos, who questioned Madoff's investing years ago and even brought it to the SEC's (in)attention, told Congress yesterday, “The SEC had enough to get Madoff. I drew them pictures. I gave them a road map. I told them what questions to ask and who to phone.
