A Conversation with Jonny Greenwood

A Conversation with Jonny Greenwood

Jonny Greenwood was named the BBC’s composer-in-residence in 2004; during this time he debuted "Popcorn Superhet Receiver", a twenty-minute work for string orchestra inspired, in part, by the phenomenon of white noise and Penderecki’s "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima". Tickets are on sale for a two-night performance of the composition at The Church of St. John the Apostle in January as part of The Wordless Music Series; works by John Adams and Gavin Bryars will also be performed. more ›

I'm not listening, I'm not listening!

I'm not listening, I'm not listening!

My ex-roommate used to masturbate very loudly. How loudly? Like I would be in the living room, watching L&O: SVU with the sound on at a normal level and 30 feet away, through a closed door, I could hear her moaning. Whenever I heard her, I'd immediately leave the area, go to my bedroom, close the door, and turn on the radio. more ›

Mayor B Turns the Lights Out

Mayor B Turns the Lights Out

There are still 73 civilian cars with lights and sirens; besides the mayor, Deputy Mayor of Operations, Marc Shaw, chief of staff Peter Madonia, and Press Secretary Ed Skyler are the only administration officials who get to keep them. Some officials had to plea their case for why they should keep them, while others felt the sirens and lights weren't neccessary to begin with/ One told the Post, "Like I use them anyway," and chief medical examiner, Charles Hirsch, told the Times if had only used them once in his 15 years and "If I needed that to define who I am, I better redefine my priorities." more ›

Loving So Much

Loving So Much

The best part of a panel about "LOVE" sponsored by The Week magazine was when Harold Evans asked Bernardo Bertolucci, via a patchy connection from Rome, about love. Bertolucci said, "What love? Like I have passion for cinema!" and then he went into a story about how he loved Jean-Luc Godard and his work so much that the first time he met JLG, Bertolucci threw up on him - "That was the manifestation of my love for him." Cinephilia and gastrointestinal distress - that's Gothamist in a nutshell! more ›

Beautiful, Pharell-Style

Beautiful, Pharell-Style

I love the Neptunes and N.E.R.D., and they do have a very hot sound, but the over-Pharell-ization of music today makes things a bit...boring? The Neptunes are the hottest producers these days, but case in point: Beautiful, Snoop Dogg's new song with Pharell Williams (the most visible member of The Neptunes/N.E.R.D.). It's tight and sexy but it gets predictable. This quote by Sasha Frere-Jones in the Village Voice's Pazz and Jop ('Tune versus Tim, as in Timberland) issue says it all: more ›

Pirated Sites

My other site got featured on Pirated Sites after someone borrowed the template. Like I've said before, I love when people borrow the template- as long as they give attribution. The other site has been getting about 500 unique visitors a day off the link for the last five days. more ›
