According to sources, the NY Giants and New England Patriots are playing in the "Super Bowl" today in Indianapolis. Fans have already started converting their lawns into tributes to the gritty men and women who shall do battle today for our undying love (and/or hatred). What this all has to do with bowls, heaven knows. But it should make for some tasty bread, and some delicious circus.
Did You Know That The Super Bowl Is Today?
What If: Carnegie Hall Had Been Replaced By That Big Red Skyscraper
Remember back in 1957 when brownstone Manhattan was being replaced by "new facades of gleaming aluminum"? (Actually, didn't that start in the late '30s?) Well Carnegie Hall wasn't safe from the building boom either, and this week Ephemeral NY reminded us of that now infamous rendering of a giant red skyscraper that was set to replace the hall. The image ran in a LIFE magazine article in September 1957; read the full article here, and a brief history of the Hall's near destruction here. Thankfully, the red giant never left paper.
The Photographer Behind The Kiss
Earlier this week, Edith Shain—the nurse in the iconic V-J Day kiss photo—died at age 91, never really knowing who the sailor she created the moment with was. However, LIFE magazine now takes a look back at the man who photographed the two.
Alfred Eisenstaedt was one of their prolific photographers, covering "everything from post-war Hiroshima, to Ernest Hemingway in Cuba, to Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels—who famously scowled when he learned that the elegant young man taking his picture was Jewish." Eisenstaedt recalled the Times Square image fondly, writing in his book:
Flashback: Some Dumb Inventions Live on in NYC
There's a terrific gallery of old images courtesy of LIFE (naturally) that show off 30 Dumb Inventions, all of which can still be seen around the city today. Yes, even the baby cage (on any given day in South Williamsburg you can see children hanging out in these things). It's probably best that inventions like the dog restrainer didn't make it to the present day, however; PETA would have likely had them banned by now anyway. [via Animal]
Google Hosting Millions of LIFE Images
As Andrew Sullivan simply stated, "Say goodbye to the rest of your day." Google is now hosting an exhausting millions of images from LIFE's archives, "stretching from the 1750s to today." Here are a few NYC gems, and if you're looking for more of old New York, we'd suggest having some search keywords in mind to make it a bit less overwhelming!
Joe Lally, Musician
Your newest album is called Nothing is Underrated, which seems to me to be open to a lot of different interpretations. Indeed, it is.
Randy Quaid's Lawyers Call Ban a "Smear Campaign"
Yesterday we told you all about Randy Quaid being banned for life from Actors’ Equity and fined $81,572 for abusive and lewd behavior during the Seattle production of would-be Broadway musical Lone Star Love. Since then we’ve tried to get a comment on the allegations from Quaid’s wife Evi, who attended the Equity hearing on his behalf and ended up getting into a physical altercation – she says they broke her finger while trying to forcibly bar her entrance, they say she kicked a 76-year-old receptionist in the shins, drawing blood.
