Today and Thursday are Rent Guidelines Board's hearings for the public to weigh in on the proposed increases to rent stabilized apartments. The board is looking at a 2-4.5% increase for one-year leases, and a 4-7% increase for two-year leases, and you can expect the tenants to argue for lower increases and the landlords to argue for higher ones, with some clever signs and passionate discourse. Today's hearing is in Brooklyn, at the NYC City College of Technology at 285 Jay Street, from 4PM to 10PM; Thursday's hearing is in Manhattan, at Cooper Union's Great Hall at 7 East 7th Street, from 10AM to 6PM. Let Gothamist know if you attend any of these sessions.

New York is in a tizzy because it's the day before The Gates in Central Park officially open. Gothamist must say, we love how there's so much excitement about public art. Honestly, there hasn't been this much excitement and anticipation from photobloggers in New York since...the Republican National Convention last summer. Wow, Mayor Bloomberg, you really know how to push New Yorkers' buttons! The finishing touches won't be put on The Gates until tomorrow at 8AM. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were beaming on the Today Show, alongside Mayor Bloomberg; Katie Couric showered all three with hosannas over the project, and Jeanne-Claude is Gothamist's new hero, as she smacked Katie a little bit. Seriously, whether or not people love or hate The Gates, it's pretty thrilling there's so much passion around public art. Even Newsday's Ellis Henican agrees!
With winter's approach - and the onslaught of holiday catalogs and storefront windows greeting us at every turn - only warm thoughts of sugarplums and holiday bonuses are keeping us from dreading the nightmare to come: the office Christmas party.
NYC.gov and NYC TV Channel 74 will have coverage of events in Times Square starting at around 8PM. And we couldn't resist this photo of Mayor Bloomberg trying out some Greek food when announcing that Restaurant Week would be priced at $20.12 as a nod to NY's bid for the Olympics.
