This week some new photos of Macaulay Culkin surfaced, showing a much more frail version of the actor than we've seen in the past. So naturally, eyes were on Le Poisson Rouge last night, where the actor hosts his monthly Macaulay Culkin's iPod nights on Thursdays, but he was a no-show.
Gaunt-Looking Macaulay Culkin Bails On NYC DJ Gig Last Night
Are You Ready To Dance With Macaulay Culkin And His iPod?
Have you ever wondered what's on Macaulay Culkin's iPod? You probably are now, right? I mean, this is the kid who survived Michael Jackson and then went on to make the fantastically campy '80s club scene flick Party Monster, so he probably has quite the playlist going on there. Find out for yourself next Thursday at Le Poisson Rouge, when Macaulay will host the aptly named "Macaulay Culkin's iPod" dance party, for free!
Le Poisson Rouge Charges $3 Extra For Glenlivet With Ice, $3 Extra Without
We're quite fond of the Greenwich Village live music club Le Poisson Rouge, so we were surprised to hear some grumbling about the bar, which seems to be charging patrons extra for drinks on the rocks (a common practice), but also charging extra for drinks not on the rocks, a.k.a. neat. One unhappy customer recently sent a copy of his or her receipt to Eater, and it shows a $3 charge for Glenlivet with ice, and a $3 charge for Glenlivet without ice. WHAT IS THIS RAPACIOUSNESS AND WILL THEY APOLOGIZE?, we asked the club. They got back to us promptly with an explanation that, well, kind of makes sense.
Deerhoof, David Byrne Kick Off Timely JapanNYC Festival
The second installment of Carnegie Hall's sprawling cultural festival JapanNYC has been in the works for months, but due to recent tragic events in Japan, it seems fitting and maybe even somehow therapeutic to celebrate all the phenomenal art, music, cinema and performance that the Japanese give to the world. The organizers of the festival, which features a wide variety of events at venues citywide, explain on their website, "While plans for our JapanNYC festival proceed, we offer our thoughts and prayers to those affected. At this incredibly difficult time, we feel it is particularly important to pay tribute to Japan and its people through these festival events."
Apes and Androids Do Halloween At Le Poisson Rouge
Every time theatrical glam-prog rockers Apes and Androids take the stage, it feels like Halloween. You can always count on a Busby Berkeley-size supporting cast of costumed dancers, massive paper mache demon heads, neon boats sailing through the crowd, stilt-walkers, confetti, balloons and vast mountains of glitter. And their shows that actually coincide with Halloween—in '06 at The Annex when they recreated Michael Jackson's Thriller in 3D, and last year at an obscure Williamsburg loft—have cemented their reputation as New York's ultimate spook night party band.
(Le) Poisson Rouge Unveiled
(Le) Poisson Rouge somewhat quietly opened the doors to 158 Bleecker Street a little over a week ago. The renovated space is still undergoing some final touches before their grand opening in September, but they are currently partially open and hosting shows (view the calendar here). The venue has a pretty legendary history, from the press release:
"The Village Gate operated at 158 Bleecker Street from the late '50s until 1993, and played host to icons ranging from John Cage, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone, and Aretha Franklin, to Jimi Hendrix, Allen Ginsberg, Jim Morrison, Timothy Leary, Andy Warhol, and the Velvet Underground. It is this same experimental, genre-bending spirit that (Le) Poisson Rouge hopes to carry forward as it re-opens the doors."As mentioned back in May, the space (when fully complete) will consist of an 800-capacity flexible performance space (250 seated), 130-capacity attached, soundproof lounge bar, 2 cinema-sized screens, 2 elevated VIP Opera Boxes, a full catering kitchen, concert bar menu, and daytime lounge menu. So far only their cocktail menu is available on their website -- the rest will come in September, when the paint dries.
New Venue Alert: (Le) Poisson Rouge
With venues closing down left and right, it's nice to see some opening as well -- especially in Manhattan where most are getting priced out. "(Le) Poisson Rouge is "an 800-capacity multimedia art cabaret founded by musicians on the site of the historic Village Gate." The space, located at 158 Bleecker, will be opening once their ongoing major remodeling work is complete. Right now there are some events booked for June, but they tell us they'll be officially opening in September.
