Hallelujah, the Beacon Reopens in February

Hallelujah, the Beacon Reopens in February

Today we received a message saying that "Tomorrow at 10am, MSGE will be announcing the legendary artist that has been confirmed to reopen the Beacon Theatre in the coming weeks. The beloved New York landmark recently underwent a 7-month restoration to return the venue to its original grandeur, and one of the most prolific musicians of our day will take the stage of the magnificently refurbished theatre for an unforgettable night of music to celebrate this historic event." Related? Everyone is abuzz about how the 74-year-old Leonard Cohen will play the Beacon on February 19th. There's nothing on Beacon's calendar for that date as of yet, and the rest of their scheduled shows begin around that time. more ›

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Taps Madonna, Mellencamp

Oh, to be a confused, sweaty fly on the wall at the Waldorf Astoria last night, when Iggy Pop sang Madonna songs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Pop and the Stooges covered "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light" in a tribute to the pop queen, who was inducted along with Leonard Cohen, John Mellencamp, The Ventures, and The Dave Clark Five. more ›

Remembering Jeff Buckley

Remembering Jeff Buckley

Ten years ago today Jeff Buckley drowned while taking an evening swim. Buckley had many ties to this city, first moving here in 1990 (though only staying for seven months at that time). He was back in the spring of 1991 to perform his first show, a tribute concert to his father, Tim Buckley. The event was held at St. Ann's Church on April 26th, 1991, where the singer announced: "This is not a springboard, this is something very personal." more ›

Peter Bjorn & John, Band

Swedish rockers Peter Bjorn & John have won over the world with their brand of catchy indie pop. Last time they were in town their album wasn't even released yet and they sold out three shows. This time they've got two consecutive shows at Webster Hall (May 1st and 2nd)...and hopefully you got your tickets, as they are both (suprise, surprise) sold out already. This week Peter took some time to answer some questions for us... more ›

Blogging From the Hotel Chelsea

Blogging From the Hotel Chelsea

When we were younger, and outside of NY state lines, we dreamed of moving here and taking up residence at the Hotel Chelsea. We quickly learned we wouldn't be able to keep rent there. However, if we win the lottery, we will indefinitely rent a room at the landmark. more ›

Phil Spector, Record Producer, Arrested

Well, Phil Spector has finally gone and actually killed someone, as opposed to just murdering people's music. Just kidding Phil! Phil Spector, Record Producer, Arrested on suspicion of homicide... More about Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. I remember reading about Leonard Cohen's troubles with Phil Spector during the recording of Death of a Ladies Man: "Inscrutable and dictatorial in the studio, Spector often confiscated the musicians' charts after hours of preparation. The title song was recorded in one take at 2:30 in the morning, when Cohen and the musicians were close to exhaustion. During the sessions, Spector was inaccessible, Cohen says. He took the tapes home every night under armed guard. He chose the tracks for the final mix without consulting anyone and then mixed the album at a secret location." more ›
