Being underground on a steamy subway platform can be sweaty and soul-crushing. Which is why spotting Sam Waterston this morning—waiting for a train with a crowd of commuters—was like a mirage. When he entered the crowded 1 train, he took out his glasses and studied the subway map—perhaps he was trying to figure out what station would be his best bet to check out some of these spots.
Best Subway Commute Ever: Spotting Sam Waterston On 1 Train
Mapping Law & Order's First Season
We love few things at Gothamist as much as we love the OG Law & Order and maps (pretty much only one thing, in fact: Pandas). So we'd be remiss not to mention Very Small Array's latest bit of awesome: A map of all of the (non-fictional) street addresses listed in the first season of Law & Order.
Video: Law & Order Fan Grills Daughter On Favorite Parent
We love everything Law & Order related, from Jerry Orbach's eyes to dog snatching stories with happy endings. But perhaps one Australian fan took things a bit too far when he tried to use his extensive interrogation know-how to get his daughter to say she loves her dad more than her mom. Suffice to say, he's no Det. Robert Goren.
NYPD White Shirt Under Investigation For Punching Protester
The actions of the NYPD officer seen punching protester Felix Rivera-Pitre in the face during last Friday's Occupy Wall Street protests are officially under investigation. According to the Guardian, the New York Civilian Complaint Review Board is looking into Deputy Inspector Johnny Cardona's use of force. "We have several ongoing investigations involving police interactions with protesters, said the CCRB's spokeswoman, Linda Sachs. Presumably included are the actions of Deputy Inspector Tony Bologna, who pepper-sprayed seemingly innocent women during protests on September 24.
Soon You Can Own Every Law & Order Episode Ever
If you've been reading Gothamist for any amount of time you've probably noticed that there are two things we love almost as much as New York: Pandas and Law & Order. And while we're unlikely to be getting any of the black and white variety here in New York anytime soon (though we've got red ones!) come November we should be able to own every episode ever of everyone's favorite dearly departed crime procedural. All for the low, low suggested retail price of...$700.
Patti Smith Will Be On Law & Order Tomorrow
Musican, author, and all around legendary lady Patti Smith will appear on Law & Order: Criminal Intent tomorrow night. Which is pretty crazy, right? Even if it's certain that by the end of the Law & Order franchise, almost everyone will have appeared on the show.
Is This The End For Law & Order: Criminal Intent?
The Times has a piece on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and it is a sad one: it seems that the show's shortened eight-episode 10th Season may very well be its last. USA has billed it as the "final season," and most of the cast and crew seemed resigned to their fate, though some, such as Kathryn Erbe (who plays Det. Alexandra Eames), are in denial. “To have a show in New York go down is not good for New York...The fact that we managed to do these eight more episodes gives a lot of people eight more episodes of income,” said Vince D'Onofrio, aka Det. Robert Goran.
Law & Order: Spider-Man Intent To Take On Troubled Musical
There's been no lack of mocking headlines and critical jest at Spider-Man: Die Hard With A Vengeance Turn Off The Dark, by far the most expensive tone-deaf musical ever. But no headline has truly made it until it is ripped out, reassembled, and immortalized into a Law & Order plotline. And it seems that Julie Taymor's great folly will be getting its moment in the sun very soon, when Law & Order: Criminal Intent takes on the musical in an upcoming episode.
Crunching the Numbers of Law & Order
The good scientists over at Overthinking It have taken on the Herculean task of analyzing and quantifying the first ten seasons of beloved TV show Law & Order. They may be too humble to call themselves heroes, but they (and reader/obsessive viewer Josh Kyu Saiewitz) certainly are to us. In their database, they breakdown the outcomes of the cases by season (36.7 percent result in plea bargains), and the conviction/"success" rates.
Hotheaded Cops Being Trained To NOT Lie On The Stand
The NYPD is trying to end the days of Det. Elliot Stabler losing his cool on the witness stand: the Police Department has created a handbook for cops with tips on testifying at trials...because it seems there are still a few cops out there who need to be told, "Do not concoct answers or explanations - just state that you do not know." The NYPD is responding to several recent cases where cops were caught blatantly lying on the stand; the DAs have even provided staff to act as prosecutors and defense lawyers in order to grill the cops in mock trials, teaching them to avoid "testilying." Let's take a look at some more of their advice:
Law & Order "Superfan" Found Guilty Of Stalking
It took jurors less than five hours long to find "superfan" Charles Nagel guilty of stalking Law and Order: Criminal Intent star Kathryn Erbe. He was found guilty of stalking her over the mail and on the internet, but not guilty of interstate stalking. Nagel probably didn't help his case when he spent five hours on the witness stand earlier this week, pontificating over the nature of his love for Erbe, blaming one of his daughters (who are both named after Batman characters) for doctoring a Facebook photo of Erbe's daughter, and sharing his sexual fantasies involving McDonald's cheeseburgers.
L&O Star Stalker's Tale, Erotic Fast Food Fantasies
We thought the whole stalking saga of Law & Order: Criminal Intent star Kathryn Erbe was an open and shut creepy-dude-on-the-internet-is-obsessed-with-mid-level-TV-actress case. But the testimony yesterday by superfan Charles Nagel has opened our eyes. See, Nagel was "Internet friends" with Erbe via MySpace, and the two had been trading friendly messages. So you can understand how upset he was when he found out that the account was being run by a teenage imposter!
L&O Star's Stalker: "Shower Of Love Will Never Stop Coming"
Opening statements were made in the trial of "misunderstood fan" Charles Nagel, who is accused of stalking Law & Order: Criminal Intent actress Kathryn Erbe in person, online, and in his blogging heart. Prosecutors read damning excerpts from Nagel's blog about Erbe, including some winning one-liners such as, "I want to look in her eyes and make love," "Obsession is only around the corner from love, but it is not a bad thing," "Kathryn is everything and everything is Kathryn," and "She's pretending she's better and the shower of love will never stop coming."
Law & Order: CI Stalker Just Wanted To Add To His Christmas Card List
The man who was accused of stalking Law and Order: Criminal Intent star Kathryn Erbe earlier this year was charged with interstate stalking by federal prosecutors yesterday. Charles Nagel, 36, of Philadelphia, was arrested on state misdemeanor charges in March after he had accosted the actress on the Law and Order set several times over the past two years. Maybe he was just trying to amuse her?
Law & Order Star Stalked by Singer/Songwriter
A singer/songwriter/stalker who for three years obsessed over Law & Order: Criminal Intent star Kathryn Erbe, sending letters to her Brooklyn home and showing up on set, has finally been arrested, reports the Post. Charles Nagel, who uses the stage name Chaz Rose to sing "romantic smooth" songs influenced by Michael Jackson and Johnny Mathis, wrote on his MySpace page—which is mostly devoted Criminal Intent and Erbe—that "melody feeds the soul."
Facebook Status Update Keeps Teen Out Prison
Imagine if the most important sentence you ever wrote was a Facebook status update that goes something like this: "ON THE PHONE WITH THIS FAT CHICK......WHERER MY IHOP." Now you know how it feels to be 19-year-old Rodney Bradford, who used that all-caps message to keep himself out of prison.
Jerry Orbach's First Wife Defends Her Son
Marta Curro, Jerry Orbach's first wife, is defending her son's recent vitriolic letter to his step-mother, which was leaked to the Post. The letter accuses Orbach's second wife Elaine Cancilla-Orbach of screwing Chris Orbach and his brother out of the $10 million estate left by their father, which they can't dip into until she dies. (The letter also blames Cancilla-Orbach for manipulating Orbach to donate his eyes after his death.) But the 75-year-old Curro, who was married to Orbach for 17 years and remained close with the actor after their divorce, says her son is right to be angry at wife #2: "She's funny looking and she wears polyester pantsuits, and that just makes me laugh. There's nothing funnier to me than stupid people being evil, because they put a tack on your chair and expect it to kill you."
Orbach's Son Accuses Stepmom of "Shucking Out" Jerry's Eyes
In an extremely angry letter to his stepmother, Jerry Orbach's son Chris blames her for the television detective's decision to donate the gift of sight to two New Yorkers. In a letter that was meant to be private but was leaked yesterday to the NY Post, Chris paints a nasty picture of Jerry Orbach's widow, Elaine Cancilla-Orbach, calling her a "double-dealing, lying, scheming, miserable fool."
