No one expected much out of the New York Red Bulls in their only 2012 league match against 2011 MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy. On paper, a full strength LA and a depleted Red Bulls sounded less like the "1 Percent Derby" and more like the 1% hosting the 99%. But even without its highest paid players, the Metro side made waves with a defensive 1-0 win at the Home Depot Center.

It was a match dubbed by supporters as "The 1% Derby". With the five highest paid players in the league (David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Rafael Marquez, Robbie Keane, and Landon Donovan) split between them, the New York Red Bulls hosted the LA Galaxy yesterday afternoon in the first leg of the MLS Western Conference semifinals. The scrappy game saw questionable officiating, a post-match fight, and a lone Mike Magee goal that gave LA a 1-0 road victory heading into Thursday's second leg.

The opening match of the MLS Playoffs saw the #4 Wildcard New York Red Bulls travel to Frisco, Texas to face the #1 Wildcard FC Dallas. With a strong streak against Dallas - New York has won three and tied two of their last five meetings - RBNY were considered the favorites against a Dallas side that had looked out of energy over the last month of the season. Despite looking tenuous at times, the Bulls won the match 2-0 and move on in the playoffs to face the LA Galaxy.
