O'Bama Food Cart Opens, Just in Time For St. Paddy's Day!

Two-time Vendy Award-winning Kwik Meal has opened up a new food cart in Manhattan dedicated to President Obama, who apparently has a wee bit of the Irish in him. Midtown Lunch noticed the cart, called Meal O'Bama, yesterday, and asked owner (and former cook at the Russian Tea Room) Muhammed Rahman about the name. Rahman says, "I just wanted to come up with something new… a new name, and I feel like it would be an attraction. He is the President of America. Also, he is a good person and I really like him, but don’t know how to say it. I want to say nice things, but don’t know the words." Now we know Rahman's not Irish. But it's true, sometimes O'Bama love is best expressed simply by selling grilled lamb and falafel in his name. Tuesday is St. Paddy's Day, and if Rahman's really smart, he'll kick it up a notch by cooking up some dyed-green chicken shawarmrocks.

Under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday afternoon, five vendors of New York City street food gathered for the 4th annual Vendy Awards, the Oscars/Golden Globes/MTV Music Award/Olympics of street food. In contention for this year's award were Fauzia's Delights from The Bronx, the Biriyani Cart from Manhattan, Kwik Meal from Manhattan, Soler Dominican from Brooklyn, and Calexico Carne Asada from Manhattan. And for the first time at the Vendys, a people's choice award for best dessert vendor was up for grabs. Contenders in that group included the Treats Truck, the Dessert Truck, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, and Wafels and Dinges, which was a no-show.
