President-elect Obama met with former foe John McCain at his transition offices in Chicago today to discuss issues that have the potential to unite them once Obama takes office. Aides of the two said they discussed climate change, ethics reform and national service. Obama may have also been looking for assistance with McCain's sway among Republicans who are likely to be resistant to the economic stimulus package the president-elect would like to see passed ASAP.

In a move that could signal the beginning of a second half run or the beginning of the end, the Giants announced yesterday that the wealthy rookie quarterback Eli Manning will take over the the offense and start under center this Sunday when the Atlanta Falcons come to the Meadowlands.
The game started well, with the Giants twice marching the ball 80-plus yards down the field and easily scoring a pair of touchdowns, but then the Cardinals put a few extra men on the defensive line to stop Giants running back Tiki Barber and force Kurt Warner to throw under pressure. On the Giants' third drive Warner was sacked twice and it all went down hill from there. For the rest of the game, the line could not buy Warner any time and he was sacked six times on the day. With Warner struggling mightily and golden boy Eli Manning on the sidelines, the quarterback controversy is beginning to really heat up.
We at Gothamist are not going to lie, we are very depressed about the Giants. We have no idea what to expect from this team. Kurt Warner looked terrible last week and there is a brewing quarterback controversy with golden boy Eli Manning waiting in the wings. The only bright spot is that the Giants are on the road this week where they are 3-1 as opposed to 2-2 at home.
This Giants team is beyond frustrating. After losing to a mediocre Lions team at home, the Giants destroyed the Vikings on the road and then proceeded to lose to one of the worst teams in the league back at home. The Bears lulled the Giants into playing down to their level in the first half after the Giants had taken a 14-0 lead. Then in one six minute stretch during the end of the second quarter the Bears forced three straight turnovers (all via quarterback Kurt Warner) and took control of the game for good. Oh and Michael Strahan and bunch of other key Giants suffered injuries as well. So at least the Giants fan has that going for them.
Thus far, Tiki Barber has been holding on to the ball and leads the N.F.C. in rushing, but another intriguing story has been the play of god loving and grocery bagging quarterback Kurt Warner. Warner has completed almost 65 percent of his passes and has thrown only one interception in 147 attempts. Although he’s thrown only three touchdowns, his consistency along with the strong play of the offensive line (Chris Snee turned out to be a stud) and the defense has this team winning games. Also look for Gothamist favorite Jamaar Taylor to get some burn for the injured Tim Carter.
The Giants may not be winning pretty and they're certainly not getting all the headlines, but they're winning all the same and in the N.F.L. wins are what count. After yesterday's 26-10 victory over the Cowboys in Dallas Stadium, the Giants have already matched last season's win total and will go into their bye week with a 4-1 record and a 4-game winning streak.
Anyway this should be a good game. Finally the Giants Cowboys rivalry has some juice again. The coaches have a long history and are still friendly off the field. (Giants coach Tom Coughlin was an assistant under Parcells when he was the coach of the Giants in the late eighties and early nineties and the two won a Super Bowl together in 1990.)
After being pronounced all but dead after a week one spanking in Philadelphia, the Giants won two games at home and then went out yesterday and defeated the Packers, 14-7,at Lambeau Field. It was New York’s first victory in Green Bay since 1974.
Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre is banged up with a bruise the size of a softball on his leg, but hell be making his record 212th straight start at quarterback. Favre will be doing his best to stop the Packers two game losing streak and dont count on him taking any dives like he did in 2001 to give Michael Strahan the N.F.L. single-season sack record.
First off, we know the Browns are banged up, with Kellen Winslow and Courtney Brown not playing, but the big story is drumroll please the Giants offense stinks. Seven turnovers should certainly get you more than 20 points, but we know that wasn't the case against the Skins. Now the troops are getting restless. Tight end Jeremy Shockey mouthed off on Wednesday that he feels hes being misused and then yesterday Amani Toomer chimed in that he's unhappy with his role.
As all Giants fans know, defense sets the tone and the defense yesterday went a long way to turning the Giants young season around. The unit forced 7 turnovers that led to 17 points and led Big Blue to a 20-14 victory over the Redskins. It was the Giants first victory in their last nine games. The Giants have never lost 10 in a row.
Everyone knew the offensive line was going to be bad, but the defense proved to be even worse than people expected. Donavan McNabb and receiver Terell Owens, who needed a police escort to get to the game on time, connected for three touchdowns and Eagle running back Michael Westbrook rushed for 119 yards.
This could very well be a long season. We at Gothamist predict an 8-8 finish, but you never know. We thought last years team was going to compete for a playoff spot and they ended up 4-12. So take it for what its worth. A lot of questions still remain and first-year coach Tom Coughlin still has a lot of positions up in the air. Whos the middle linebacker? Whos returning punts? Did they really just sign a kicker on Tuesday? Oy. This doesnt look good.
- Oy, the Giants aren't looking good and the season has yet to start.
The Giants have been torched by every first unit theyve played against so far this preseason and last night was no different. Baltimore did as they pleased on both sides of the ball on their way to a 24-3 halftime lead and a 27-17 victory over the Giants last night at a sparsely populated Giants Stadium.
But don't worry Giants' fans, this controversy is far from over. As soon as Warner slips up, the television cameras will be trained on Eli Manning sitting on the bench and the rumblings will begin. Also Warner has had some injury and concussion problems in the past and with the way the offensive line has been playing, Manning could see time earlier rather than later. Giants quarterbacks have been sacked 14 times in three preseason games.
Kurt Warner was sacked four times and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Jesse Palmer came in during garbage time to get a cosmetic touchdown.
"The decision coming in was that they were going to compete for the job," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "Therefore, we were going to give both of them the opportunity to start, and this week is Eli's opportunity. Last week was Kurt's. This week is Eli's. It's a rotation I planned to do all along."
Of course the big news was the professional debut of Eli Manning, the highly touted and highly compensated rookie quarterback out of Mississippi. Manning, who entered the game early in the second quarter after Kurt Warner started the game, completed 7 of 13 passes for 91 yards. More importantly, however, Manning led the Giants on three drives that resulted in points on the scoreboard. Late in the first half Manning took the Giants from their own 23-yard line to the Kansas City 24 in 64 seconds to set up a field goal that brought them to within a touchdown.
Today marks the start of training camp for both the New York Giants and the New York Jets. Both teams are coming off of disappointing seasons and are obviously looking for improvement. The Giants finished 2003 with a 4-12 record and in a four way tie for the worst record in the NFL. The Jets finished marginally better at 6-10 and with 8 less wins behind the AFC East, and the eventual Super Bowl winning, Patriots.
There are reports that Eli Manning has looked good in the second mini-camp this off season, improving on his throws and his presence in huddles. When talking to the Daily News, Tiki Barber said, "Every day he's gotten better. The first day he looked like he couldn't play in high school. The second day he started to figure it out and he was more comfortable calling the plays. And as the weeks have gone on we can see he's confident. And when he is confident he throws a great ball, he knows exactly what he's doing." But when contrasting the two quarterbacks for The Times, Barber says, "Just the way Eli talks, with that drawl, it's so slow. When Kurt gets in there, it's much quicker. He exudes confidence. It is different."
- The Giants sign former MVP Kurt Warner.
This morning, a groggy Gothamist saw an interview that Warner had with the NFL Network where he said that it's great coming to a team with "so many weapons." Correct us if we're wrong, but didn't you just play for the "Greatest show on turf"? As much as we would like to think so, Gothamist doesn't think that Tiki, Ike, Jeremy, and Amani are the same.
Although negotiations can't officially begin until 4 PM this afternoon, numerous sources have revealed that former St. Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner will be in a Giants uniform very soon, possibly as early as today. "He's got a real good feeling for the Giants," Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said. "That's really all I can say right now."
