Umi Nom, the Brooklyn outpost of the Lower East Side's popular Kuma Inn (one of Tyra Banks' favorite spots, incidentally), opens tonight on DeKalb Avenue, along the border of Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant. The pile of bricks, broken concrete and odd bits of old electrical conduit have now become an open kitchen. Chef/owner King Phojanakong and co-chef Soulayphet “Phet” Schwader have gotten rid of the washing machines in the former laundromat, but managed to salvage many of old building's interior details, including its exposed brick and an old skylight that was uncovered during the renovations.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Umi Nom: moving along, right on schedule, is the Pratt-area Brooklyn outpost of the popular LES restaurant Kuma Inn, at 433 DeKalb Avenue. Chef/owner King Phojanakong gave us another tour of the space last week; the rubble has gone and the drywall is up. Phojanakong also recently received some special sake pouring equipment to install at what will become a wood paneled bar where twenty sakes by the glass will be available. The chef is in process of refining the new restaurant’s menu, which will follow Kuma Inn’s small-plate format, including the ever popular Chinese sausage and sticky rice dish.

An old, shuttered Laundryland next to a Crown Fried Chicken at 433 DeKalb Avenue on the border of Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant is set to be renovated into a restaurant. It will be an outpost of the hugely popular Kuma Inn, owner King Phojanakong told us in May. We got an exclusive first look at the raw space yesterday.

The festive factor was running high at last night's Taste of the Lower East Side, the 8th Annual fundraiser for the Grand Street Settlement. Forty neighborhood eateries pitched in to benefit Grand Street's programs that assist low-income Lower East Side residents, and they showcased some of their best dishes for the crowd of well over 1,000 people.

- When our work colleague showed us this in his copy of the Post yesterday he said the below described sandwich was for sale at McDonald's:

A new steak sandwich going on sale today in London will make your mouth water and your wallet cry - because it costs a whopping $148. The McDonald sandwich consists of pricey Wagyu beef, Brie de Meaux cheese, 24-hour fermented sourdough bread, and foie gras-flavored mayonnaise.
Turns out it is the McDonald sandwich from Selfridges, a department store in London. Still not sure it could be worth $148.

May 10: A Taste of the Good Life, Une Soirée en Provence

Today: Danny Meyer's Shake Shack re-opens. People are all in a tizzy about this place. We have to admit, we like the burgers at the Burger Joint more, but we haven't tried the famed dogs and custard yet. It's only open from 11-4 through April, but extended hours start May 1st. Madison Square Park, Southeast Corner.

New York magazine's Underground Gourmet on Kuma Inn, which is located at 113 Ludlow between Delancey and Rivington, 212-353-8866. It's cash only; NYC Eats wisely advises to make reservation if you're going during a busy time, but we went late on a weekday and found it easy to get a table.

The Daily News has suggestions on where to go and celebrate (which means eat) the New Year: Bao 111 on Avenue C, Dim Sum Go-Go , Kuma Inn, Ocean Palace Restaurant in Brooklyn, and Taste Good Malaysian Cuisine in Elmhurst. Just make sure you have noodles (longevity), fish (prosperity), spring or egg roll (looks like gold ingot), and cake (something that rises - it's good).
