Members of Columbia University's Chicano Caucus and International Socialist Organization had a press conference yesterday to discuss the fallout from last week's clash with the Minutemen group on campus. The protesters said they didn't mean to stop the Minutemen's head from speaking when they went on stage, but, as the Chicano Caucus' political chair reasoned, "We are sure that if the Ku Klux Klan came to campus, African Americans would be there to protest. So would we." The protesters also emphasized that the violence was instigated by the Minutemen and College Republicans - not the protesters.

Representative and head of the Homeland Security committee Peter King of New York wants better airport security. How much better? Well, better enough to protect against shoulder-fired missiles. In fact, let's look at the transcript of what he said on Fox News (yeah, we know, Fox News...) since he mentioned a NYC neighborhood while talking to Chris Wallace:
Well, I'm not saying we should be targeting people, Chris, but I think we should put political correctness somewhat to the side and say that a screener or even an airline should have the right to factor in a person's national origin.Continue reading "Airline Travel: More Than Meets the Eye"
Once upon a time, St. Patrick's Day was a day simply full of pageantry and feasting. But those days are over, as most St. Patrick's Days seem to be full of controversy, and this year even features some really classy (or is that assy?) remarks by the parade organizer. The big hullabaloo is about how City Council Speaker Christine Quinn - an Irish City Council Speaker!! - is not marching in the parade because she was not able to reach a deal that would allow lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Irish New Yorkers to participate as well as being able to wear something like a gay pride pin or sash. And this comes as the parade organizer, John Dunleavy, told the Irish Times:
"If an Israeli group wants to march in New York, do you allow Neo-Nazis into their parade? If African-Americans are marching in Harlem, do they have to let the Ku Klux Klan into their parade? People have rights. If we let [Irish gay activists] in, is it the Irish Prostitute Association next?"Yeah, we don't know where the logic is - we just hear crazy man. Quinn said Dunleavy's remarks don't even "dignify a response"; Dunleavy claims that Quinn is welcome - just without any symbolic references to her sexuality. Well, the parade didn't allow some firefighters to wear their tams last year - maybe the officials thought they were too metrosexual (this year the firefighters are holding them).
Tonight head over to BAM to celebrate a life in Come Share the Dream: the 20th Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..
We're not sure how we missed this, but a few days ago the boys at Low Culture caught a couple of pictures of what is possibly the most inexplicable window display we've ever seen in New York City (and that's really saying something!) We all know that the Apple brand has long been strong on white power; they've released white laptops, iPods, and computer towers for years now. What we did not suspect was how seriously they took this commitment... or how horrifyingly deep it ran! Sadly, our muckraking excitement was deflated when we tracked down the book on Amazon and read the description:
