Mets Trade K-Rod, Wild Card Hopes, To Brewers

Mets Trade K-Rod, Wild Card Hopes, To Brewers

In the first major trade after the National League won the All-Star Game yesterday, the Mets traded closer (and texting enthusiast) Francisco Rodriguez to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers, who are tied for first in the NL Central, will send two players later to be named. Although this leaves the Mets bullpen in shaky standing, and casts a shadow on the likelihood for a long-shot wild card run this year, the move was seen as inevitable by most, and a means to a different sort of end: retaining All Star shortstop Jose Reyes. more ›

Last Night's Action: Beating The Champs

Last Night's Action: Beating The Champs

The Mets stunned the defending champion San Francisco Giants with a three-run ninth to take the opener of their series 5-2. Anthony Pagan's two-run homer had given New York a 2-1 lead in the 5th, but the Giants tied things up in the 6th off of R.A. Dickey and that's where things remained until the 9th. Scott Hairston led off with a home run off of Brian Wilson to give New York the lead. An error allowed Pagan to reach second base and Carlos Beltran singled him home for a two-run lead. Beltran advanced to second on a single and scored when Nick Evans hit a two-out single to center. That gave New York a three-run lead and K-Rod pitched a perfect 9th for his 23rd save of the season. more ›

Last Night's Action: Series Wins

Old Timer's Day at Yankee Stadium is always a special occasion, but Sunday's affair seemed bigger than usual, in part because Joe Torre and Bernie Williams came back for their first Old Timer's Day. Yogi closed the introductions as usual and plenty of former stars highlighted the festivities. On the field, the Yankees overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat Colorado 6-4. Jorge Posada and Nick Swisher went deep and Mariano Rivera, who begged Michael Kay to introduce him as an old timer, showed he still has time on his side by striking out the side to earn his 20th save. more ›

Last Night's Action: How About Some Pie?

Last Night's Action: How About Some Pie?

Yankees 3 Texas 2 (12 innings): Brian Gordon made his Yankee debut, scattering seven hits, while allowing only two runs and the Yankees swept the Rangers in extra innings. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead on a single from Russell Martin. Texas countered with two runs in the fifth, but the Yankees tied things up on a Jorge Posada double in the sixth. That's where things stayed until the twelfth inning. Curtis Granderson started things with a single. After Mark Teixeira flied out, Robinson Cano was hit, or at least appeared to be hit, by a pitch. Texas argued that the ball actually hit Cano's bat, but the umpires gave Cano the base putting runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Brett Gardner then hit a bullet through the infield to right and Granderson raced home ahead of the throw to give the Yankees the victory. more ›

Who's Your Daddy: K-Rod Sued By Girlfriend's Dad

Since he apologized to his team, textually apologized to his girlfriend 56 times, and generally ate quite a lot of crow, Mets closer Fransisco Rodriguez was probably hoping he was out of the fire by now.
