Last Night's Action: A New Garden King

Lakers 126, Knicks 117: Kobe Bryant dumped in a cool 61 points -- that's a new Madison Square Garden record -- and the Lakers pulled away from the Knicks, who got as close as two in the second half. Bryant only had 34 points in the first half. Michael Jordan once put up 55 -- the cool kids call it "double nickels: -- and Bernard King had 60 on Christmas in 1984. Bryant even heard chants of MVP and got cheered for his performance. Pau Gasol had 31 points as well. Al Harrington had 24 and David Lee had 22 -- and 12 rebounds -- for the Knicks.

Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro, and some young constituents, unveiled two new 10-ton fish tanks at the St. George ferry terminal. Molinaro said the tanks will liven up people's commutes; in July, he told the Advance, "It's very soothing because we live on an Island and it's very pleasant, so it fits perfectly."

The Lakers cruised to a 70-45 lead and then had to hang on against a Knicks’ rally that happened with the unit of Nate Robinson, David Lee, Malik Rose, Jared Jeffries and Jamal Crawford playing most of the minutes. What changes are coming? It’s hard to say, but a good start would be splitting Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph up. Let’s just hope Isiah doesn’t start making trades.

Stars 3, Rangers 2: What good is outshooting the opponent 41-18 if it doesn't lead to a win? That's what the Rangers have to ask themselves after Sunday's disappointing loss to the Stars. No matter how this game is measured -- except for the score that is -- the Rangers appeared to outplay the Stars. Mike Smith repeatedly stifled the Blueshirts' attack, however, and goals from Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan didn't end up as...

With Kobe Bryant's trade demands in and out of the news, Gothamist wonders what Isiah Thomas would give up to put Bryant in a Knicks uniform. If you follow basketball, you know that Kobe has on again, off again, on again trade demands, and there's a video being shopped around where Kobe says some disparaging words about Lakers management and Andrew Bynum. The Lakers say that they won't be trading Kobe - and why would they - but when Thomas first heard of Byrant's trade request, he did think of a package.

Happy Father's Day! For those of you who have dads, are dads, or know dads, this one's for you, from all of us at the Gothamist network."

  • Islanders 3, Maple Leafs 2 (SO): Give the credit to Rick DiPietro. He made plenty of third period saves to get the game to overtime and a shootout before the Islanders could pull it out. The Islanders had been 0-10-1 in their last 11 trips to Toronto, and they got outshot 16-1 in the third period. They might not be so lucky the next time.

  • Jared Jeffries was back in the starting lineup and responded with 14 points while Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury added 27 and 22 points apiece.

Kobe Bryant dropped 81 on the Raptors less than a week ago and 40 on the Knicks on Tuesday, but last night Epiphanny Prince almost topped his total for the two games combined. The senior at Murray Bergtraum scored 113 points in a 137-32 win over Brandeis yesterday. The point total is a record for a girls high school game, besting Cheryl Miller's (that's Reggie's sister) of 105 from 1982. Prince, who will be attending Rutgers next year, had a previous best of 55 points in the 8th grade.

It is hard to imagine how things can get worse than this. Off the court, the Knicks have a sex scandal and revelations of their GM’s love child. On the court, they have completely given up. Facing a terrible Atlanta team, New York turned the ball over 23 times and lost 120-101.

When Phil Jackson retired from coaching the Lakers after the 2004 season he didn’t have a lot of positive things to say about Kobe Bryant calling him selfish among other things. Bryant chafed at playing within Jackson’s offense when Shaquile O’Neal was the primary option. A year apart obviously changed both of them as Bryant now shoots when he wants to, 36 times last night, and Jackson seems content to take his ten million dollars a year while watching him. The happy couple led the Lakers to a 97-92 victory last night as Kobe scored 42 points while going 15-36 from the field.

The Nets shot a dismal .359 from the field, a mark that the Heat even betted from 3-point range (.385). Miami was .480 from the field overall. Nenad Krstic, one of the lone bright spots for the Nets, had 27 points in the loss. Jason Kidd was a non-factor with only 10 points and 5 assists. Vince Carter scored 21 but was was 6-16, which actually lifted the Nets shooting average.

    - And there's still a war going on in Iraq

At 12:01 AM this morning, NBA free agents finally became eligible to put their John Hancock on the deals they agreed to over the last two weeks. While most of the press is focusing on where Kobe Bryant will land, local hoops fans are waiting with baited breath to find out what Kenyon Martin decides to do.

The Yanks ended up dropping two of three in their weekend series with the Dodgers. Javier Vasquez lost the series opener 6-3 (box score) to former Yankee Jeff Weaver. After Weaver gave up three runs in the first inning, he settled down and held the Yankees scoreless for the next five innings. Eric Gagne came in to nail down the victory in the 9th.

    - The waning interest in Sebastian Telfair.

Current Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant whipped the voracious New York media into a frenzy earlier in the week when he stated that he would make a recruiting visit to New York if the Knicks extend an invitation when the free-agency courting period begins in three weeks. All it would take is a call from GM Isiah Thomas. "I'm going to listen to all options. If he invites me, I'll be there," said Bryant.

More and more the USA Basketball committee that is selecting the 12 players for this summer’s Olympic basketball squad are hearing "I’m out", especially since the recent bombings in Athens. All this makes Gothamist wonder, who's in? Players that have turned down bids to play for Team USA include Seattle’s Ray Allen (fiancé giving birth this summer), Jersey’s Jason Kidd (nagging injuries), Toronto’s Vince Carter (getting married this summer), Minnesoata’s Kevin Garnett (fatigue from prolonged playoff run), and a trio of Lakers which include Karl Malone (needs time to recover from injury filled season), Kobe Bryant (pesky pending rape trial) and Shaquile O’Neal (doesn’t really want to go). Although he has not declined his invite yet, sources say Indiana’s Jermaine O’Neal is considering pulling out because of safety concerns in Athens.

Jason Kidd and Allan Houston both have bum knees. Kidd, the Brooklyn New Jersey Nets point guard may miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs with his knee injury with surgery a possibility as well. Houston, the Knicks co-captain, has no idea when he will return. The injuries to both players have post-season implications for their teams.

News that Kobe Bryant bought his wife a $4 million ring last week may either be taken as PR stunt or truly the "big love" that the jeweler who made the ring claims is between Kobe and wife Vanessa. The purple diamond is 8 carats, and not the first of extravagant jewelry Kobe has purchased: He also got their 16-carat wedding set and a 7.5-carat yellow diamond at Santa Monica store, Raffinity.
