Gang Stabbing In E 26th St Apt. Lobby Leaves 1 Dead

Yesterday morning, two men were stabbed in the lobby of an apartment building on East 26th Street near Second Avenue in Manhattan. According to the Daily News, it's believed the suspects were "Gang members looking to avenge the shooting of a drug dealer... Investigators believe five men were waiting in parked cars outside the... building and jumped their victims when they stepped into the lobby just before 9:30 a.m." An 18-year-old died while a 30-year-old survived his stab wounds—both were stabbed repeatedly in the face and chest. The incident that spurred that stabbing is apparently a 4 a.m. shooting that occurred outside Pacha on West 46th Street; suspected drug dealer Michael Slater is in stable condition at Bellevue, which is just a few blocks away from the apartment building. A 21-year-old newcomer to the neighborhood told the News, "I moved here from Missouri yesterday. I didn't expect to step outside on my first morning here and see someone almost dead."

Yesterday morning, a guard taking $330,000 to a Dunbar Armored van from the M&T Bank at 1st Avenue and 23rd Street was held up by a man in a gray hooded sweatshirt. According to WNBC, the guard, Janell Nelson, 22, did notice the man in the bank's vestibule: "As she went to the bank entrance he pounced from behind, put his arm around her chest and grabbed her handgun." They struggled and the robber managed to take the bag of money. The Armored Car's driver saw the robbery, but the Post reports he "is under orders not to leave the vehicle." The Daily News says cops are seeing if it was an inside job. The suspect is in his 20s-30s, around 5'10" and 230 pounds. A source also told the Post, "It was a pretty good robbery."

With the mid-week Fourth of July holiday, an abbreviated work week practically demands an afternoon at the movies complete with giant tub o' fatty snacks and subzero air conditioning. New York is a real haven for movie theater aficionados, and we all have our favorites. Here's a brief breakdown of what to see, and where, this holiday. In the comments feel free to weigh in on the best and/or worst places to see giant alien vehicles attack earth or betrothed couples acting goofy.

Who would residents say is the worse neighbor - Columbia or NYU? For today, at least, the controversy surrounds Columbia, plus the Department of Education. Columbia and the DOE will be opening a secondary magnet public school this fall for sixth through twelfth grade. The school will eventually be located on the university's planned Manhattanville campus, but until the building is completed, the DOE has decided to put the school in PS 36, a pre-K to second grade school on Morning Side Drive and West 121st. Enter the angry parents.

A man was killed by a car while he crossed Third Avenue around 4PM. The Daily News reports that 54 year old Eugenio Garcia of Queens had been visiting a friend in Kips Bay. The black car that hit him did not stop, but some onlookers tried to follow it. Two doctors started CPR on him, but were unable to revive him. Onlookers also say that Garcia was not in the crosswalk.

Recently, it was announced that architect James Ingo Freed died last week. Who? He was a partner at Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners - the firm started by I.M. Pei; you can read his bio here. While many obituaries called out the fact that he designed the Holocaust Museum in D.C. (here's a link to the museum), Freed designed a lot of recognizable city buildings: The Kips Bay Plaza housing, University Plaza Towers on Bleecker (also known as Silver Towers), 88 Pine Street in Wall Street, and the Jacob Javits Center. In fact, as noted in the Times obituary, the MoMA's Terrence Riley says that University Plaza and 88 Pine are "two of the most refined examples of modern design in all of Manhattan."

While logic tells us Episode III will be as painfully disappointing as the last two film chapters, many critics have applauded Lucas's latest effort, even comparing it to A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. The movie premieres next Thursday, May 19th, at midnight and most NYC theatres are offering several 12:01 AM shows. If you’re interested in buying tickets online, most digital projection theatres, like Loews Kips Bay, have already sold out, but you can still catch a Loews stadium seating.

For those of us living the "Gothamist" lifestyle, New York City can sometimes seem like a steady stream of fabulous nightclubs, swank cocktail lounges and ritzy restaurants. Sometimes, however, the Manhattan merry-go-round gets to be too much. At those dizzying moments, its time to seek refuge somewhere low-key, yet upbeat, low-maintenance, yet ever-so-slightly upscale. A tough order to fill. We know. But, thankfully, during those troubled times, Gothamist has The Waterfront Ale House to turn to - with not only one location, but two: the original in Brooklyn Heights and its spinoff in Kips Bay.

has Gothamist intrigued.
