The Gothamist Newsmap noted a report of a "possible armed man" around 1 p.m. at King and Varick Streets in downtown Manhattan. Various readers tell us that the police are swarming the area over reports of a "pissed off sniper." We heard that one, perhaps two people were on a roof, possibly with a rifle, hence the NYPD helicopters.

We heard the fire trucks honk, squawk and blare, but we didn't realize what was going on until Alan of Thousand Robots sent us a dramatic photograph of a fire from what looks like Sixth Avenue and Spring/Charlton/King/Prince vicinity. And now we hear helicopters! Does anyone know what's going on?

Joe caught a good picture of our favorite downtown sign-- it's on the corner of Varick and King Street. The sign is for a copy shop, and shows the little guy running towards their store. [For more streetsign fun, checkout some Thundercut stencils.]
