Cambodian Pop Star Goes to the Bronx

Cambodian Pop Star Goes to the Bronx

New York has a small Cambodian community. The Fordham and University Heights sections of the Bronx are home to about 2000 Khmer immigrants. One of the more recent immigrants is Ratana Veth, Cambodian actress and karaoke star. (Note: The Times refers to the her as Ratana Veth but her internet fans invariably call her Veth Ratana). Veth married Tek Vandy, owner of the Battambang II grocery store on East Kingsbridge Road, last year and moved to the Bronx in September. more ›

Map of the Day: NYC Bike Maps!

Map of the Day: NYC Bike Maps!

We're always looking for current bike path maps. The most authoratative comes from Transportation Alternatives, but it's a 1.5MB PDF, and hasn't been updated this year. The NYC Bike Map 2006 mashup pictured above is attempting to fill in the gaps, but seems to be missing a bunch of the smaller paths. We've already featured the Secret Bike Maps page-- but still haven't taken that trip to City Island. Has anyone successfully biked up there from Manhattan? We've circled the route on the map above, but we're not sure how long it would take to get there and back, and none of our pansy-ass friends will do it without some more information. more ›

The New Bronx Library Center

The New Bronx Library Center

The NY Sun's architecture review of the new Bronx Library Center on Kingsbridge Road prompted us to look for some photographs (James Gardners says the library is like a "flying saucer in a cornfield" - and that's "not necessarily a bad thing"). And the NY Public Library's Bronx LIbrary Center website does have photographs of the new buildling's construction progress. Gothamist loves how the library is next to Tuff City Tattoos. more ›

Police Looking for Bronx Rapist

Police Looking for Bronx Rapist

Last night, local news channels play a grainy surveillance tape from a Kingsbridge-area Bronx apartment building that seemed to show the man who raped a 16 year old on the building's roof on Wednesday. According to reports, the girl was walking home from the Kingsbridge Road subway station at 5:40PM and had entered her building when the man grabbed her. He threatened her with a knife and raped her, later tying her to a satellite dish and stealing her earrings and money. The girl was able to free herself, and ran home and told her mother. more ›

Subway News: Boards Falling Apart and A Stabbing

Subway News: Boards Falling Apart and A Stabbing

The Daily News looked at the dangers of some subway stations' platforms: At many stations, the "rubbing boards," which are the barriers next to the platform that act as a buffer so the train doesn't hit concrete, are crumbling apart, which can lead to potential subway riders' falls. The DN says riders could trip on the uneven surfaces and the cracked boards could snag someone's heel. The dangerous stations are "Burnside Avenue, Mosholu Parkway, Kingsbridge Road and 183rd St. on the No. 4 line in the Bronx and at Smith/Ninth Sts. (F), Lawrence St. (M,R) and Newkirk Ave. (B,Q) in Brooklyn." more ›
