Beastie Boys Perform On Boat In East River For Previously Unseen Chappelle Show Clip

[UPDATE BELOW] Over the weekend, many musicians, artists and other notables shared their remembrances of the late great Adam Yauch, the musician and filmmaker known worldwide as MCA. The Mets walked out to Beastie Boys songs before Friday night's game, and there was a beautiful Yauch tribute on the MSG scoreboard during yesterday's Knicks game. And yesterday comedian Neal Brennan, who co-created and co-wrote the Chappelle Show, shared this video that never aired, from the series' aborted third season. It features Beastie Boys performing "The New Style" on a boat in New York City’s East River. Earlier today, the video was taken down for violating Viacom's evil sensibilities, but now it's back up... for now. more ›

Is This The End Of Sonic Youth: Kim and Thurston Split

Psychic hearts no more: the coolest couple in the world, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, announced that they were separating after 27 years of marriage, putting the future of the long-running alternative band in jeopardy. "Later tonight a giant rattlesnake head's gonna rise up over Manhattan and swim over the river and introduce us to 2012," Sonic Youth frontman and soothsayer Thurston Moore announced at the Williamsburg Waterfront deep into the quintet's set Friday night. Taking a cue from a deranged man up front who'd been yelling about making pottery with Moore back in the '80s and shouting requests for prescription medication, Moore added, "And yes, it's gonna spray LSD and angel dust, and we'll all become women." Oh, just another twisted Sonic Youth show—three freaking decades since they formed, they still know how to destroy a room with sound waves. more ›

Kim Gordon: Clothing Designer?

Kim Gordon: Clothing Designer?

Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon has stepped off stage and into the world of clothing design, starting a label called Mirror/Dash (named after her and Thurston Moore's side project) with friends Melina Wansbrough and Jeffery Monteiro, the NY Times reports. The musician told the paper, “There’s a need for clothes for cool moms,” and her first piece is a limited edition military-inspired wool jacket. If you want one of the 50 made, you'll have to be a size 2 through 8, and be willing to fork over $415...a price one might consider if she were marketing whatever it is that makes her and husband Thurston keep their youthful looks. Earlier this month Gordon showed her support of a fellow designer when Sonic Youth played a Marc Jacobs show during Fashion Week. more ›

Music is a Better Noise

On the cusp of November, Music is a Better Noise opened up at P.S.1. The exhibit brings together musicians who make art and (you guessed it) artists who make music - or at the very least, use music as a creative motivator in their art. more ›
